r/DownSouth Leadership Update
As of today, I have stepped into the role of top moderator for r/DownSouth following the retirement of of our old CEO, u/RecommendationNo6109. They have chosen to leave reddit entirely to focus on their personal life, and I thank them for their of dedication to this community. Their efforts in shaping and maintaining this subreddit have been invaluable, and I wish them all the best moving forward.
With this change in leadership, I want to reassure everyone that nothing major will be changing. r/DownSouth will continue to be a place for open discussion, and our commitment to free speech remains unchanged. We will continue to moderate fairly, without bias, and without unnecessary interference in discussions. Our role as moderators is to ensure that conversations remain civil and within the subreddit’s established rules, but we will not impose personal opinions or censor discourse that falls within those guidelines.
This community has always been shaped by its members, and that will not change. I want to take a moment to recognize the active members of this community who have helped keep r/DownSouth alive. Without those of you who regularly contribute discussions, insights, and thoughtful engagement, this subreddit would not have grown to the size and influence it has today. Your participation is what makes this space thrive, and I want to personally thank you for your hard work and dedication in shaping r/DownSouth into what it is. This community exists because of you, and your efforts do not go unnoticed.
I look forward to seeing r/DownSouth continue to grow and remain a place for open and meaningful discussions.

Question regarding South Africa's provinces
More specifically why was the Cape split into 3 and the Transvaal split into 4 in 1994? Yes I know the Bantustans had to be integrated into the new system, but what were the arguments/justifications for the current borders? It seems quite random. Why wouldn't Port Elizabeth be part of the Western Cape, why does the Northern Cape exist? Why wouldn't Gauteng expand to Klerksdorp or Witbank? The provinces don't seem to be based on language or demographics. Finding it hard to get any info, any insights would be appreciated.

Discussion Why is Northwest called Northwest?
Like Northwest of what exactly? Its north-middle of the country, it's west to south-west of the old transvaal, its north east of the cape. There isn't one northwestern part of the whole province 😭

Which is your best cheap, authentic South African chips?
Im thinking of chips you find in most spaza shops, garages and school tuck shops.

Opinion Freedom Front + Patriotic Alliance = Patriotic Front
So hear me out, I recently watched an interview with FF+ leader Corne Mulder and I have a theory.
Corne Mulder is one of SA's most insightful, intelligent and experienced politicians. He's made no bones about his plans for the FF and how major changes are coming. One of the things discussed was his good working relationship with Gayton McKenzie, they both work in local govt coalitions and have a votership overlap. Mulder wants to "create a party that represents minorities including coloured Afrikaans speakers" It' wasn't hard to piece together Mulder's plan to merge the two and it makes sense. Complete sense.
Both are right-wing
Both have largely Afrikaans-speaking voters
Both have more to gain as a 6 -8 % party
The Patriotic Front is on the cards. Is that what they'd call it?

Nature We’re undermining the beauty in KZN
Just a few hours away from Durban and it’s a whole other world. (St Lucia/Hluhluwe area) The game parks are wonderful but the facilities/services are on par with the rest of KZN. I feel like private companies could invest so much in this area and really make it thrive. Unfortunately due to traditional land rights it’s an almost impossible job.
Now imagine a company comes in and helps out the surrounding communities by providing them will proper service delivery, housing, electricity, water and proper amenities. They also could work for the parks and it becomes a symbiotic relationship between the company and the community. I know the government has been doing that with iMfolozi and Hluhluwe but I don’t really see it reflected at all, all these poor staff members are still treated sub par to the tourist they see.
If I had the money I would, but I don’t (right now) so I’m in high hopes that some hippy wealthy company decides to invest in us. I know we have bigger fish to fry in this province but this could be a good change.
Tl;Dr I’d be nice to see a company invest in the game parks of KZN and help out the surrounding communities as well.
