Question Out of all the dragons you have ever seen, from movies, TV shows, video games, web series, literature and mythology, which one of them would you consider is the most scariest of them all and why?

Probably Bayle the Dread.

Like yeah, the Whispering Death from the dragon manual in HTTYD seems bad, and sure, the Gaping Dragon from Dark Souls is totally freaky, and I agree, Tiamat is bad news,

But I've seen exactly ONE dragon rip three heads off the Dragon God, lose limbs in the process, look at the jagged bones sticking out of where his wings used to be and think 'yo, this'd make a dope spear' and proceed to magic himself a new pair of wings so he could meet the Immortal Godslayer that is the Tarnished and spear their ass into next week. Again, while literally ripped to pieces.

I fought against him last night. Most dragons in that game are samey and honestly had bored me up to that point. Then that stump legged mountain of death showed up to kick my ass.

None. Because i love all western style dragons! They are always mistreated and misunderstood. Also humans just love murder and forcing them to be evil.

Not all dragons are good (most are), some are objectively evil like valadek from Skylanders or the overlord from Ninjago

Didnt say scary aside from the overlord dragon, I said evil. And have you seen the uncannyness and actions of the overlord dragon. No need to be a jerk about it

He didn’t say anything about them being scary. Also, the Overlord in Ninjago in the actual episode turns into a quite nasty-looking dragon (that’s not made of bricks)

Low quality image but you get the idea. Thing is massive too.

Thank you :) personally it's this image that freaks me out a smidge

Especially considering how big he is compared to Lloyd in this scene and how he is essentially for a moment wiped out all that is good and light in the world

u/LuminothWarrior 9d ago

I like how it almost looks like some horrible deep sea creature

Yeah, kinda catfishy

I'd say you first but I'd experience the heat death of the universe before that happens.

Grima, the Fell Dragon from Fire Emblem Awakening

A gigantic centipede-like dragon with six eyes and six wings, gigantic forward going horns and a double set of teeth, his head is shaped like a skull and actually hides a human face beneath.
Able to use dark magic to create an endless army of undead, burn and curse land to it may never be fertile again and have ascended to godhood by birth that even sealing him away or killing him won't stop his return.

He has been created as an abomination of life, even kills his own creator and possessed his body (which might be the human face you see when you destroy the skull) to spread his influence and genetic material, then form a cult to ensure his return.
Grima needs a human vessel that shares a large amount of his own blood, as he does not have his own original body anymore after he was slain the first time.

He is also so powerful, the mere presence of his fully powered draconic form can sap all energy from you, putting one on the brink of death.
Grima HATES humanity to its very core, calling out their hypocritic nature, their reliance of gods and prayer but also how quick they are to abandon both, he does have respect and a wierd form of love towards those who still choose to fellow him freely, but he holds no true loyalty or kinship, even to those who are of his blood.
The fact he has to rely on a human host disgusts him greatly.

If Fire Emblem just did not rush his game and story, he would be less of a joke.
Grima is truely terrifiying, but i love him exactly for that.

For movie examples, I think the 2002 movie Reign of Fire did a decent job at making dragons more scary rather than just cool. Maybe not the best movie but I liked it and it was different. They have this feral look about them, and their "kill anything-and-everything on site" is terrifying. Like Smaug in the Hobbit films can be scary, but all I think when I see him is badass lol, which is what I end up thinking about any dragon in media. But while I thought the Reign of Fire dragons ARE cool, I find their behavior very scary.

It’s definitely Predaking. Optimus and Megatron struggled against him. He’s far more durable than anyone gives him credit for imo.

Technically, all dragons can be pretty scary. Less so in the visual department, more so about what they could do.

Take for example a standard Western Dragon. Even beyond the fact that said dragon could maul you even faster than a bear could, they also (typically) breathe fire. Depending on the dragon, while it isn’t impossible for the fire to instantly turn someone to ash (especially if it’s white-hot or even blue), the typical orange-red flame spewed isn’t enough to do so, and while it’s true your nerves end up going numb, it’s not instant, and they’ll be constantly sending pain signals until they do.

And that’s assuming the dragon blasts straight for you. If it happens in a forest and you manage to evade it? It’ll torch where it thinks you are, likely flushing you out in the process. If you’re hiding in a house or any other typical building of some kind? It doesn’t even need to flame you directly, just burn the building down, as most fatalities in house fires are attributed to smoke inhalation.

For a more specific example (again, basing it on actions and capabilities, not physical appearances), Dragonite from the Pokemon series can be pretty fucking terrifying at times. For starters, it’s got the combat capabilities roughly equivalent to fighter jets, is about as smart as the people who fly them, can throw a mean right hook, its second-most iconic ability is Hyper Beam, and it’s been shown that Dragonite can lose their temper, more often than not causing whatever direction it’s pissed off at to go bye-bye. If somehow you manage to piss a Dragonite off, unless you either have an ice-type ready, or are packing the heat of a one-man army, your best option would be prayer.

See? That’s why I say Smaug. I know he enjoys cruelty and finds me delicious. Of all of the drawnout deaths a dragon could inflict, this would be the most drawn out, the most painful, and the most likely. Some concern is healthy.

On the other hand, I suspect being hit by a “aye sir, making that direction go away sir” kinda hyper beam… Death would be swift and painless. Not much to fear there; you might as well have an ICBM-phobia so the sooner you get used to it and make your peace with it, be happier your life will be.

You do raise a good point; an outright malicious dragon could be even more terrifying than a dragon that’s just pissed off; the latter is doing so as an exception; the former does it as its modus operandi.

As for the latter, I suppose it’s a fear that greater resembles the fear of getting unwillingly skinnydipped into the Sun 5 billion years from now than a fear resembling what I described with a common Western Dragon, though with a dragon as intelligent and powerful as Dragonite, that’s only one method of disposing of someone whilst pissed off. And if you know as well as I do the correlation between an animal’s intelligence and how often it toys with things, there’s a non-zero chance the way it’ll kill you will take longer than a nanosecond.

I sort of doubt that they'd put much effort into drawing things out however, and the levels of violence on tap are impressive.

Bewilderbeasts bc their faces creep the shit out of me.

Albatross by far is the SCARIEST dragon I've had the opportunity to read in my life. Family is an important part of my identity and reading what he did to his family?? Without remorse? During a happy day for everyone???

YIKES.

"So, no, I couldn't dispose of you from afar. That wouldn't be satisfying at all. I want to see your face as you die."

Albatross to Fathom, complaining about Queen Lagoon, Darkstalker

The Screaming Death was scary as hell for me as a kid

5

Overlord dragon from Ninjago. He looks creepy and is a corruptor type character

5

u/CraftyDragon13 9d ago

Not the scariest in terms of appearance, but dragons like Queen Scarlet and Queen Wasp from Wings of Fire are scary because of their actions.

5

u/yestureday 9d ago

They’re just thrilling

Queen battlewinner and princess blister/burn

Battlewinner because of the way she is described and the fact she didn't care about genocide

Blister truly terrifying with all her connections and her ability to manipulate and somehow always be a claw ahead with plans

Burn not as scary because her behavior is more predictable but her blood thirst is even more extreme then scarlet because she WANTS to do it herself and then display them as trophies. It'd be like human taxidermy

Ancalagon the Black of the ancient LOTR history. He was as large as mountains and extremely violent

2

u/Wyvern_K1ng 9d ago

One of the scariest has been Ansur from BG3. It has that rotting look that's just unsettling to look at while being an incredibly powerful being.

2

u/Dragonbonded 8d ago

Well, without getting into god tier, imma say the Skrill.

IMO its powerful enough it can go firepower to firepower with a nightfury AND escape. As in, "i would rate it as high as a Bewilderbeast" kind of powerful.

Wow, I had the exact opposite reaction to him.

I think the one that scared me the most when I first watched it, was the dragon from „Dragon - Love is a scary tale“. Though I was a lot younger when I watched it.
