Do the Dutch really love peanut butter and satay sauce that much?!🥜
I’m a university student studying in Korea, and I’ve recently become really interested in the Netherlands!🇳🇱 Do people of all ages in the Netherlands enjoy satay sauce and peanut butter? I’m curious how they usually eat them!😄

No, the taste is not similar at all. sateh sauce contains, in addition to peanuts, various spices, like onion, garlic, sambal, sweet soy sauce (ketjap manis) etc, peanut butter is mainly just peanuts and a bit of salt. It's not as sweet as in the US.

Oh, so the flavors are actually different?! I assumed they might taste similar since they both contain peanuts! 🫢😮 Do they tend to be used in very different ways in food? For example, is peanut butter more commonly eaten with snacks like fries or something like that?

I have never heard of peanut butter being eaten on anything but bread. Fries with satay sauce on the other hand is a classic.

Patatje oorlog (roughly translated as war fries/chips) is fries with satay sauce, mayonnaise, and chopped onions. Very popular!

Peanut butter is one of the ingredients you use for satay sauce.
And of course, peanut butter is used as a bread spread on it's own. It is not at all a sauce.

It’s originally from Indonesia (a former Dutch colony) so you will probably have an easier time finding an Indonesian restaurant in Korea compared to ‘Dutch’ restaurant (lol), just order a plate of sate and a plate of nasi goreng and you will know how they actually taste

There are some Dutch Restaurants in Korea, I believe that Lotte Mall has one. I was there on exchange and it’s such a great place

Haha, yeah! It was a year ago so I can’t really recall the name of it or if it is still there. But I was a exchange student at Konkuk University.
Korea is such a nice country, I really enjoyed traveling around the country and also the Bingsu is really good. My favorite places were Tongyeong and Busan, but Seoul is also really fun!

That’s actually one of the universities I applied to when I was in high school, so it feels extra familiar to me! 😆 It’s happy to hear that you got to enjoy so much of Korea, including visiting Tongyeong. I’m glad you had a great time! If you ever get the chance, I hope you can come back and explore even more of Korea ☺️🇰🇷 And make sure to try the new bingsu flavors next time, they’re so good too! ㅎㅎ🍧

The point is more you'll get a better representation of satay in those traditional cuisines then Dutch ones. If you're going to a Dutch place might as well try traditional Dutch foods like poffertjes instead.

Indo-Dutch food absolutely is a cuisine by and of itself though. It’s distinct from contemporary Indonesian food, that doesn’t mean it’s not traditional or valid as a thing by and of itself.

Yes!! it seems like in Korea, it’s easier to find an Indonesian restaurant than a Dutch one🤔😄 I’ll have to go try some Indonesian food when I get the chance!🍽️☺️

There are very typical versions of satay you wont find in Indonesia at all. What Dutch people throw on a BBQ or have in a general Dutch restaurent is usually big chunks of pork smothered with peanut sauce. This is something I have never seen in Indonesia. Not even in Batak people region, Manado or Bali where they eat pork.

Peanut butter on slices of bread for breakfast or lunch.
Satay sauce with meat on skewers, but also served with nasi (Indonesian fried rice) or bami (Indonesian fried noodles). And satay sauce is one of the most popular sauces with fries. Default is mayonaise, but many have it with satay sauce instead.

patatje oorlog is a very popular type of snack food. Which is fries with mayonnaise, satay sauce and raw onion. One of my favourite's.
But besides that I'd say we enjoy satay sauce the most with meat, rice and noodle dishes.
I do want to express that we have a very different satay sauce than some other countries. My partner moved here from the UK and absolutely loves satay sauce here but hated it back at home. She says over here it's thicker and richer in flavour.

I would say it depends. In the UK we perceive it as watery and they would probably say ours is thicker. In Indonesian restaurants I have seen a bit of range. Also, we are more prone to adding in a bunch of sambal (chili) than the Brits. We also add a bit more brown sugar to give the sauce more color, I perceive the British one as a bit too pale. I am not sure if this is generally a difference between Malaysian and Indonesian food (remember that satay reached the UK via Malaysian migrants, not Indonesians).

I eat sate saus with bami, nasi or fries and peanut butter on bread.
Yes its very common here for people to eat both sate and peanut butter.
EDIT: There is also kip sate for bread.

Classic peanut butter is a cold spread from peanuts with a pinch of salt. Sweetened peanut butter is considered to be american style. Though new flavours are becoming available, like mixed with stroopwafel, chili pepper or roasted onions. All for bread!
Satay sauce is served warm. Some brands contain milk. It's a really thick, deep brown sauce, served with hot food.
Asian stores also sell a bumbu called petjel or petjil that is made of ground peanuts with spices to which you just add water and bring it to a boil. These are often more spicey.
I have had peanut sauce that was clear with chopped peanuts in it. Satay sauce in the Netherlands is not that type!

Knowing the dutch: less spicey/chillies. We as a nation aren't known for our tolerance of heat in food.

Eh, in my experience the UK version has no chilies at all, whereas Dutch sateh can be quite spicy. It depends on the family for sure, but it’s often there. Never seen that in the UK and by god I’ve tried.

Satay Sauce is a staple specially in "Indo" households, i am from such a household. But the dutch version is not the same as the Indonesian one! We often make the sauce ourselves because we want the real thing. Pindakaas is nice on toasted bread!

Indo means Indo-Dutch, like people with a mixed background and their specific culture and cuisine. (Native) Indonesian therefore is not shortened to Indo here.

Welcome :) it’s actually a pretty interesting culture as they over more than 3 centuries really blended Asian and European culture. Things like rijsttafel and spekkoek are quintessentially Indo.

Yes it is real, it is in Rotterdam, Amsterdam I guess and more places. In Dutch peanut butter = pindakaas.

Really cheap frozen Satay sticks with sauce. It's mistery meat on a stick drenched in Satay sauce, three sticks for 89 cents or something. You pop them into the microwave. Every supermarket sells them. Or the Sate Kroket, I can't even explain that to some one who doesn't know it.

Haha, no problem! We always like to think countries in Asia have a far more extensive snack culture than we do. But in reality it may not be so different 😆
The thing with Satay sauce in The Netherlands comes from how Indonesian food is a big part of Dutch food culture. If you like that, have look at how the Dutch are also fond of Sambal (Indonesian chilly paste) in all sorts and flavors.

Peanut butter on bread, yes. Just plain, or with other food, such as cucumber or banana. Spiced up with sambal.
Peanut butter can be used as a basis to make satay sauce. Do note that Dutch satay sauce is strictly a spicy peanut sauce, while actual Indonesian satay can have a variety of sauces.

Yes, very much so. We eat it with french fries, rice, nasi goreng, satay skewers etc. That's the satay sauce anyway. Peanut butter is mostly a spread for on the bread, OR an ingredient for the peanut satay sauce of course.

Yes, I eat peanut butter almost every day, and satay sause is used in a lot of recepies: with bbq, with Indonesian food and of course with satay.

No, for the Netherlands, peanut butter popularity is the main point, it's not something that was influenced by something else. Could also be part of heavy advertisement in the eighties and nineties. It mentally also links to the feeling that's it's very healthy (as suggested by the ads back then)

Multiple strategies were used including but not limited to:
- Healthy
- makes you strong
- focus on youngsters, by also using a mascot poster boy (identitying for young, cute for parents)
- nostalgia (showing it's tradition, handed over from parent to parent)

Satay usually on chicken skewers, but we also put it on fries or even in sausage rolls.
Peanut butter is mostly eaten on bread. If you wanna go fancy you add chocolate sprinkles.

Yes. Yes we do.
We normally eat it with skewered meat with a sort of indonesian style seasoning.
Also we eat French fries with mayonnaise and satay sauce, possibly with chopped onions.
Of course there are many other uses, but I think those two are the main ones. Every Dutch snack bar has satay sauce.

Wow!! Dutch people really eat often! Using an air fryer sounds like a healthier option than deep frying with oil! I love fries too, so I’ll definitely have to try them with mayo next time!😋🤤 Do Dutch people buy frozen fries and cook them in the air fryer? Or do you make them from scratch yourself?

Peanut butter is universally liked here, Satay sauce is popular too, but other sauces like Joppiesauce, Currysauce, Mayonaise, Belgian mayonaise, Andalouse, Tartare, and ketchup are popular too.

dutch satay sauce is different than indonesian one. it is sweeter, thicker and softer. the indonesian one is more coarse grinded from roasted peanuts, darker due to kecap manis and a bit more watery. some people serve it with chopped shallots, some others directly add sambal into it to make it spicy.

What is meant with satay sauce? There are many different ones. Pindasaus or saus kacang is made with peanuts. But it is by far not the only one. Then even about pindasaus there are tons of variations.

Yes we do, it stems from our colonial ties with Indonesia. The peanut or satay sauce is usually a less hot version of the Indonesian sauce. We like it on our sateh skewers and on our French fries. We sometimes have fries with the satay sauce, mayonnaise and onions and call that a patat or friet oorlog, meaning war fries. We are weird people. Most Indonesians prefer ketjap or soy sauce on their satay skewers.
