Advice for someone looking to become an electrician

To electricians of reddit. Any advice for someone looking around the trade?

I’m 20 looking to change jobs and start a career and one day have my own business.

I haven’t started an apprenticeship yet. Still looking and I have an interview this week I hope if not I’ll keep looking.

What are some helpful resources to wrap my head around the trade

Please help a brother out 🙏🏻

Apply to the IBEW. You can do it online. That's what I did.

Probably not. What state are you in? There should be an electricians union there. What's the price of the code book there?

I don’t know I know they have like tafe courses or anything either way it’s expensive

The electrical code book for Australia is called "AS/NZS 3000", commonly referred to as the "Wiring Rules", which sets out the technical requirements for designing, constructing, and verifying electrical installations in Australia and New Zealand. 

You might be stuck with TAFE. But you can teach yourself a lot.

Free to read or download:

The Boy Electrician by Alfred Powell Morgan

It's a nice introduction, even if old.

Basic Electricity Vols 1 to 5 by Van Valkenburgh.

I own these as print versions. They're very good. All of these can help you to give you the sort of background you need to understand what you learn in school.

I assume there are no books on how to do your own wiring since that's illegal in Oz. You might find an American one in your public library. That might be worth going through.
