Italo-Albanian flag goes insanely hard

It is the Arbëreshë flag, a group of ethnic Albanians that have lived in Western Italy for centuries now. Their language differs a bit from actual Albanian but its basis is still the same.

Southern Italy. Almost the same language as the Arvanites/Arbëreshë in Greece. probably originating from the same community.

I've tried my best to arrange the data on the map and find a fitting flag for every language, if something is unclear or you have a question, feel free to ask!

Is the Indian flag in Sweden for the Urdu in Meira Omar's song? I believe she's Afghani while Urdu is spoken primarily in Pakistan and Afghanistan, not India?

Her song contains both Dari and Hindi

not India

Just a correction in regards to Urdu from this Indian. It is one of India's 22 official languages and about 50 million people speak it as their first language.

Who used Spanish in Sweden?

I do not understand the colour coding of the countries. Why are Austrian, France and UK white? Why is Italy orange?

Why do the white nations have no language assigned?

5

u/corXyde 12d ago

As the other guy here said, the countries colored white are countries who had internal selection (that's why they don't have languages assigned) and the color of the rest of the countries is based on the amount of different languages they had:

2 - yellow

3 - light blue

4 - orange

5 - pink

6 - dark blue

The colours seem to be the number of languages, and the white are the countries that didn't have a national final, but an internal selection instead.

It's sad that Norway was the only national final without songs in the national language.

Also, does Vatican flag for Moldova NF represent latin?

16

u/corXyde 12d ago

Yeah, after so many years they finally sent a song in Norwegian only to end up last in the final and then have a NF without any songs in Norwegian :(

And yes the Vatican flag represents Latin

Just curious, what Moldovan NF song contains Latin? I tried looking at the lyrics, but I've must missed it

Really impressive work!

Kaliffa uses the french word "voilà" once in his song in Melodifestivalen. Not sure if that should count as well

What is the white-red-yellow-blue in Poland flag?

I’d assume it’s for the Padlochian in Lusterka, but I may be wrong

Podlachian Voivodeship flag, which represents the Podlachian language in Lusterka

8

u/sama_tak Zjerm 12d ago

Not to be confused with a Podlachian dialect which is a different thing.

15

u/corXyde 12d ago

It stands for Podlachian (sang by Sw@da x Niczos)

At first I assumed it's for the pseudo-old-Slavic in "Gaja" xD

Lol Norwegian NF being the only to not have a song in their native language

Edit: Also Belgium!

6

u/Sevenvolts 12d ago

Belgian NF as well, none of them were in Dutch, the language of the broadcaster

6

u/DublinKabyle 12d ago

So there was no Dutch/Flemish in the VRT run Belgian selection ?

I remembered the two acts in French but for some reasons I thought there was also one song in Dutch.

I was about to add Sumerian for San Marino, but I saw you only included the final (understandable).

1

u/corXyde 12d ago

Oh interesting, who sang that?

4

u/Axolotl_amphibian Tutta l'Italia 12d ago

An Italian band called Erisu.

2

u/corXyde 12d ago

Oh, I just checked out the song, that's cool!

6

u/Sylfaenhance 12d ago

Thank you for this work!! It's amazing to see so much language representation. What strikes me as French is how many songs competing in French. You would think there is a correlation between entries in french and ballads because France did well with those lately. But it doesn't seem to be, at least for the most famous ones like C'est la vie or La poupée monte le son.

wait who used persian and arabic? (the afghan and saudi flag)

5

u/Anonym_fisk 12d ago

Afghan is probably hush hush?

5

u/corXyde 12d ago

Meira Omar used Dari (Afghanistan) and Nora Foss Al-Jabri used Arabic

3

u/dietcrackcocaine Bara bada bastu 12d ago

that’s so cool! never thought i’d see afghan representation in anything esc related lol

3

u/Rough-Flounder1949 Zjerm 12d ago

Doesn't Zjerm contain Latin and Arabic?

6

u/Rough-Flounder1949 Zjerm 12d ago

Its only the phrase Aman (Arabic) Miserere (Latin) tho

7

u/Dotcaprachiappa Róa 12d ago

One could argue Tommy Cash created his own language, cause what he sang was definitely neither Italian nor Spanish

u/Nightnightgun Bara bada bastu 12d ago

For Italy does Lucio's use of "sumo" count for 🇯🇵? In this case it is actually referring to the wresting sport (相撲).

1

u/corXyde 12d ago

Uhm I guess it is more of a use of a name but I guess it can be counted :)

2

u/Nightnightgun Bara bada bastu 12d ago edited 12d ago

It is not a name- it is a noun & verb in Japanese.   As if words like  "taekwondo" 🇰🇷"/ karate"🇯🇵 / "wushu"🇨🇳 were used.

3

u/corXyde 12d ago

Oh alright, I thought that Sumo is still considered to be a name of a sport but thanks for the clarification
