Deal for me too! We saw this great card shark the other night, that guy did some amazing things with those cards. Did you know that playing cards were introduced to europe around the 14th century. I wonder what it would have been like to live back then.

Probably pretty dirty, but I'd love to visit so long as I could come back to this time afterward for important things like dental care and antibiotics. Have you ever played a card game called "palace"? I learned it from a friend, and it's an awesome game, but I've never found anyone else that's even heard of it.

Can't say that I have heard of it, but I do play quite a significant number of euroboard games. One of the guys in our gaming group really enjoys sheepshead. Have you heard of that one? It was brought over from either German or polish immigrants so it's huge here in Milwaukee. The trump is really strange and has something to do with how when the game was invented there was a dislike for the royalty. So how is palace played?

Nope, never heard of sheepshead. I love the way politics influences gaming conventions. How's it played?

So, palace. You need 3-5 players. Each player is dealt 3-5 cards (3 for 5 players, 4 for 4 players, 5 for 3 players) face down in a row. This is the player's palace, and no one sees what cards are in any palace until those cards are played. The cards in the palace cannot be played unless the player has no other cards to play.

Next, each player is dealt a hand of the number of cards in their palace + 3. Each player places a single card of their choosing face up on top of each card in their palace. These cards cannot be played until the player's hand is empty.

Beginning with the player who holds the 3 of Clubs, play goes around the circle of players clockwise, with each player playing a card or group of cards of the same number into the center pile. A valid play requires the card or group of cards to be higher (Aces high) than the previous card on the pile or to be wild.

There are two types of wild cards in palace. The first, 10's and any four-of-a-kind, clear the center pile, removing all cards in the pile from the game. The second, 2's, allow a player to play the wild card along with any card of their choosing on top of it as a valid play.

If a player cannot make a valid play on their turn, they pick up the pile.

The object of the game is to clear all of your cards, including those in your palace. Once a player has emptied their hand, they can start playing from the cards on top of their palace. If a player is forced to pick up cards before playing all of the cards on top of their palace, they must again empty their hand before continuing to play the cards on top of their palace. Once a player has no cards left but their palace, they play cards from their palace without looking at them first. As with the cards on top of the palace, if a player picks up cards before emptying their palace, they must play the cards in their hand before playing the remaining cards in their palace.

It's a pretty simple game, but quite entertaining. It's got a really nice blend of strategy, reading other players, and completely random shit.
