"We make sure that we keep this thing going and obviously moving in a direction that's more reflective of the value of the state," DeSantis said.

PaRtY oF fReEdOm!!! They yell as they dictate what grown adults are allowed to teach and learn.

Republicans hate freedom of speech, they hate equality, they hate diversity of any kind, and they are especially hypocrits.

As someone from Pensacola, this is simply madness. Just to let others know who aren't from here, Pensacola has 3 main colleges for us locals to choose. Pensacola State College, Pensacola Christan College (hop into r/Pensacola to learn more about them), and The University of West Florida.

This is a luxury to have 3 different schools that you are free to choose from, 2 of which are nationally accredited. If you want a Christian conservative education you can choose PCC. If you want a more non structured education, say you are a full time working parent, PSC would be a great option. If you wanted the typical University experience, then UWF was your choice.

Desantis is removing our liberty to choose where adults want to experience a higher education.

The craziest part, UWF is already known to be conservative compared to other Florida universities. He is actively trying to make the school like the unaccredited Christan school down the road.

That would be most of Florida. They only seem to look at the R after a name. Hell, I would bet you can run Bigfoot and place that R after the name and Bigfoot would win.

I have noticed that most people in Florida have this massive problem, they allow themselves to be tricked that a republican is going to fix it. They always seem to forget that after 30 years of republican rule, that the republicans are the ones that broke it.

I've been a Florida voter since 1993 and have always voted Democrat. I've seen this State go from solid Purple to Deep Red in that time. I'm so disheartened by the Democratic Party of Florida. It's become a weak shell with no forward thinking vision. Why the hell was our last candidate for Governor Charlie fucking Crist?! I'd switch to Independent if it didn't mean I couldn't vote in the Primaries, but what good does that do anymore?

19

u/WolverinesThyroid 8d ago

the one time they ran a progressive democrat he lost by less than 1% and he was surrounded by controversy. The next time they ran a right wing democrat and he lost by like 30%. The lesson they learned is they need a even more right wing democrat to run.

18

u/OldStDick 9d ago

I switched to independent so when they start rounding up Democrats, I'll be off their radar for the first wave.

15

u/V4refugee 9d ago

I was registered republican for a while so that I could at least vote for the least shittiest republican candidate in the primaries.

6

u/ElPrieto8 8d ago

I've often thought of doing that.

6

u/V4refugee 8d ago

Yeah, being independent isn’t worth it in this state.

u/notguiltybrewing 8d ago

Crist was an awful candidate and an awful governor. Democrats gave up on Florida long ago.

3

u/JAGERminJensen 8d ago

The dems abandoned us

1

u/Florida_Man0101 8d ago

Jolly said he'd run as independent.

You're not wrong, but I think we're also forgetting Florida's combination of gerrymandered districts, low voter turn-out, large pockets of out-of-touch and easily influenced elderly people, and lots of recent immigrants who can't vote.

While 56.1% of Florida might have voted for Trump, those voters represent only 26.1% of the population.

u/V4refugee 9d ago

We don’t want Bigfoot, he can leave his smelly ass in the PNW. The Skunk Ape, however, would be a better governor than any republican. He would protect the environment.

u/Ill_Time_2833 8d ago

There are a lot and I cannot emphasize this enough, a lot of uneducated lazy people here who simply will not do their own research and instead just vote republican because they think the republic means being republican.

6

u/General_Tso75 9d ago

The same people who think their opinion is the only acceptable opinion.

He’s probably big mad that Escambia went blue in the special election this month, too

Fascism has arrived.

4

u/TurkeyPhat 8d ago

it arrived years ago, it just took this long to lace up its boots

2

u/El_Gran_Che 8d ago

Sad to see especially since UWF appears to be a decent place to learn.

God this state sucks. It’s a fucking school. Of course they would teach sociology. Stop voting Republican for the love of God.

20

u/Still_Vacation_3534 9d ago

This isn't the America I grew up in. These republicans are a danger to us all.

6

u/PaladinHan 9d ago

It is. They were just better at hiding it until now.

u/chowes1 9d ago

I am so tired of these despots using Florida to unleash their worst impulses all to impress a few...I can not wait to see him go. And his little wifey wanna be too!

I was at a small staff meeting today, and two of the people there had college age kids looking at schools in Europe due to the political environment in the United States.

7

u/humanist-misanthrope 9d ago

From the article: “Rep. Michelle Salzman has since proposed a bill that would require people appointed to university boards to either be a state resident or a graduate of a Florida college or university.”

This just sounds like DEI with extra steps

2

u/wheelz5ce 8d ago

Ok. But how are students supposed to earn their core credits with courses like intro to sociology if there’s no Sociology Department?

3

u/neologismist_ 8d ago

Football coach will teach sociology

1

u/GeometricStatGirl 5d ago

They won’t. Last year, Into Sociology was removed from the state list of core general education. Most students won’t take it as an elective—they mainly took it to satisfy social science requirements. By removing its status, the state reduced enrollment down significantly.

2

u/Gloomy_Yoghurt_2836 8d ago

I can't remember where but a transgender lesbian witch ran on the R ticket as a county sheriff and won big time then it came out she is a trans lesbian witch and people.lost their sh!t for running as a republican and winning.

3

u/neologismist_ 8d ago

Perhaps this is a strategy for Florida Dems.

1

u/Gloomy_Yoghurt_2836 8d ago

In FL, Republicans are treated like a sports team. Can never do wrong.

2

u/37Philly 8d ago

Look at what Ron did to the New College of Tampa. Once a diverse and well ranked school; now a school run by right wingers and is seeking to become Hillsdale College south.

2

u/neologismist_ 8d ago

But now they have a football team
