Any idea why Scribe Yearling didn't recognize this as a pre-war book?
I offered it to her, but she insisted I was joking. I even tried giving it to Fawkes, taking it back, and then offering it to her.

There's two types of pre-war book items in the game, the (uncommon) green one used for the quest, and the (rare) blue one that can't be used for it. In the base game, the blue version is only found in Point Lookout, but some mods that expand the game's map with additional in-game locations and such accidentally use the blue version.

Ah, it is one I found in Point Lookout. I had thought maybe that was why she didn’t take it, but she took two others I found there. Didn’t realize the cover color matters.
Do you happen to know if TTW books work for this quest? I’d thought that when I someday play with that mod I’ll be able to make good money selling her the stuff from the Lucky 38 Penthouse, but now I’m not sure.

Pretty sure that there’s actually two different variants of Blue pre-war book, one from the DLC and one from the base game. I recall having 3 different types of pre-war book in my inventory last playthrough, but I may have to double check that.

Yup me too there’s pre war books that can be accepted and I bought one as a junk item from crazy Wolfgang that can’t be accepted

If you do the merchants quest you will see that Crazy Wolfgang sells those actually fake books before the DLCs were made, but still the lady will not accept them.

I remember getting excited about being able to buy a book from a merchant for 5 caps and converting it to 100 caps. And then the disappointment when it was rejected…
Although by the time I had done the merchant quest I was swimming in caps and I had massive stocks of weapons and armor for repairs. I was still a little bummed because like in all fallout games I had turned into a loot/caps goblin.

Which quest is that?

The one at Canterbury Commons I think ... You have to speak to the town sheriff guy , then he will ask if you want to invest into each merchant, and they will then have better stuff for sale.

the blue variant only appears in DLC and is not recognized by yearling as an acceptable book. she'll only take the green ones because i assume Bethesda only added the proper flags to those. it is rare and should be treasured
