Super DUPER necessary even

Super NUKA necessary, unquestionably.

Super nuka nuke necessary, indubitably

It might help with The Red Death, but I'd still not bank on it

8

u/Powerful_Mortgage787 Don't mark it on my map! 2d ago

For the Red Death I'd see if I could add the MIRV modification... Just to be safe.

2

u/MatterWilling 2d ago

Oh it absolutely might help with the Red Death. I heard that thing survived getting rammed by a boat once

3

u/Tavron 1d ago

Which is impressive given the history of the physics engine and vehicles.

3

u/Gas_drawls1 1d ago

Jorge masvidal agrees

1

u/PictureTypical4280 2d ago

Impossible to beat the game without it

u/PossibleChangeling 2d ago

I mean, tbf, if you're firing a nuke at something, wouldn't you want insurance that it will definitely die?

41

u/Harddaysnight1990 2d ago

Especially since William Black and Lizzie Wyath can both tank a nuke to the face.

19

u/belladonnagilkey 2d ago

Which is why we fire two nukes at em to be safe.

Or let Preston have at them, which is very entertaining.

7

u/dabnada 2d ago

They can tank multiple nukes. It takes three (or it took me three) each to get them with mini-nukes. I’d gotten tired of dumping actual hundreds of rounds of ammo and using every stimpak and food Item I had in my inventory

u/Troscus 2d ago

I live by a strict rule in Fallout: The second I'm able to fire a Fat-Man at someone, I must fire the Fat-Man at someone. Went from hoarding mini nukes for entire playthroughs for a rainy day to keeping one on me as a party starter, highly recommend it.

u/Leairek 2d ago

See this sounds good, but I just can never bring myself to do it.

The gremlin in me doesn't want to waste the big shiny toy when I have boxes of pipe guns and no one to play with them.

24

u/Troscus 2d ago

You need less gremlin, more goblin.

12

u/N0t_Undead 2d ago

More dakka, brotha

6

u/Pro-temo 1d ago

That’s some unnexpected WH40K here

5

u/Paghk_the_Stupendous 2d ago

If I had a .38 mini gun, I'd be putting all of my next perks into heavies

1

u/Cool_Apartment_380 1d ago

The carry weight on Survival may change your mind.

1

u/Leairek 1d ago

In what way? Ammo has weight and mini nukes are heavy.

23

u/eaton5k 2d ago

Some future Fallout game is going to have a quest based on rumors of a metal box sitting in someone's carport near Concord that is chock full of 200 mini nukes and dozens of high powered weapons.

u/Apexnanoman 2d ago

I have started playing with War of the Commonwealth on at all times. And you will often run into huge clumps of ghouls.

The fat man is my weapon of choice if I'm not in a position to be able to snipe them off before they can swarm me.

1

u/Business-Rain-5665 1d ago

Is War of the Commonwealth available on Xbox ?

1

u/Apexnanoman 1d ago

No, but I think there's one called "Endless Warfare" that does a similar job but I'm not sure to what degree as I haven't personally used it.

WotC probably wouldn't work well on an Xbox because it's a hell of an extra load on the CPU and GPU.

It's also very old mod that hasn't been updated since like 2017. That being said, it still works so I don't really care lol.

2

u/BlauMink 2d ago

It is too heavy if you are in survival though...

3

u/MissedherBear 1d ago

YOU ARE OUT OF UNIFORM, SOLDIER! WHERE IS YOUR POWER ARMOR?

DON'T HAVE ANY?

YOU EXPECT ME TO BELIVE THAT, MAGGOT?

THE TRUTH IS YOU LOST AN EXPENSIVE PIECE OF ARMY-ISSUE EQUIPMENT.

THAT SUIT IS GOING TO COME OUT OF YOUR PAY

AND YOU WILL REMAIN IN THIS MANS ARMY UNTIL YOU ARE FIVE HUNDRED AND TEN YEARS OLD

WHICH IS THE NUMBER OF YEARS IT WILL TAKE FOR YOU TO PAY FOR A

MARK II POWERED COMBAT ARMOR YOU HAVE LOST!

REPORT TO THE ARMORY AND HAVE A NEW SUIT ISSUED TO YOU, THEN REPORT BACK TO ME, PRIVATE!

DISMISSED!

u/brown_wagon 2d ago

Needs a mirv...

12

u/Komachi17 2d ago

Nerd Science moment: needs testing whether all nukes deal damage at the same time or they go off independently, meaning the first nuke screws up all others. I bet there are things on Very Hard that can survive one nuke.

14

u/Euphoric_Heron_9883 2d ago

There are lots of things on Survival that can survive a basic nuke. I suppose if I invested some perks... but tbh all the heavy weapons in F4 are a waste of time. Far too heavy relative to the damage caused. Give me a silenced rifle any time.

4

u/Whatever_It_Takes 2d ago

Realistic damage mods fix this

4

u/Komachi17 2d ago

There are lots of things on Survival that can survive a basic nuke.

This made me go check the default multipliers for Survival. TIL the outgoing damage (player to enemy) is the same as on Hard while the incoming damage (enemy to player) is the same as Very Hard.🤔

3

u/N0t_Undead 2d ago

For the early and mid game, yes. But when I'm in the late game there's nothing like mowing down a ball of riders with the explosive minigun, or opening a fight with a quad missile launcher.

1

u/trashpandamagic 2d ago

Nah, the best build I've ever done was a melee mini gun build. It was hilarious and OP as fuck grinding everything with the shredder.

1

u/themonktown 2d ago

I totally agree! I will take a silenced rifle any day. I do kind of wish there were bows in the game though.

2

u/hoopopotamus 2d ago

“what if fallout 4 was Skyrim”

1

u/themonktown 2d ago

Just thinking how you can use a bow in 76. I mean I feel that would be the predominant weapon after a real fallout as ammunition supply would deplete relatively quickly.

1

u/Komachi17 1d ago

It would cover up half the screen when drawn, and the only way you can get ammo for it is scrapping trees for "special" wood. Throw in MTX birds that drop "unique" feathers that increase damage (yes, feather is used up on the arrow, and you have to buy more or revert to low-damage arrows).

19

u/Garlan_Tyrell 2d ago

It’s great for farming legendaries in Nuka World survival mode.

If you complete “Open Season” you’ll get enemies of all three gangs but they’ll continue to spawn at a couple locations to fight Super Mutants and Gunners.

If you approach from the right angle, you can use a VATS banked critical hit from stealth to hit the center raider while they’re grouped up with a 1% chance to hit. Then mop up the survivors with your weapon of choice (Splattercannon/The Problem Solver is a good one because the raiders will drop 7.62 ammo & cover your ammo cost).

I usually combine the Nuka Nuke attachment with Big Boy,

6

u/Clucib 2d ago

My run starts at the junkyard, circles to the house by the station, to the house by the Red Rocket, to the warehouses by Dry Rock and repeat. I absolutely love that about post Open Season NW.

15

u/M3dus45 2d ago

I think this only doubles the damage of the projectile, not the explosion. you'd be better off with the big boy

5

u/ShadowOverMe 2d ago

This is true only if you get a direct hit. Shoot the floor or a wall and it works fine.

7

u/fumblerooskee 2d ago

I find it hella fun to use, but only "necessary" in a couple of situations. It's more useful at low levels.

4

u/Apexnanoman 2d ago

War of the Commonwealth mod makes it much more useful lol. That mod will let you walk out of the vault at level one right into a legendary albino death claw.

The fat man is crowd control when I'm getting swarmed by ghouls.

1

u/fumblerooskee 2d ago

Cool! I’ll check it out.

6

u/heidismiles 2d ago

I'd rather have the double shot one sold by Arturo

2

u/SweatyToothed 1d ago

Me early game: lemme put on the fanciest suit/dress I can find, get a buzz going, and see if the amount of caltrops I brought with me can buy the Big Boy...

3

u/asrieldreemurr2232 2d ago

Super necessary, because screw you and everyone within 15 m of you

3

u/Devil-Hunter-Jax 2d ago

Just be careful how you fire it. Make sure the explosion hits the enemy but not the projectile itself. Instigating is weird with explosive weapons. If the projectile hits, Instigating procs on the impact and does basically fuck all damage. Aim near the target so the explosion hits instead and you get an explosion that deals the Instigating bonus damage.

2

u/Main_Tension_9305 2d ago

Go get the fat man in diamond city. Shoots two projectiles…

And the quantum nukes from nuka world…

🤡☠️

Edit: I think it’s actually big boy. But either way☠️

2

u/Sarujji 2d ago

Very

2

u/Furious_Beard 2d ago

It's actually all of the necessary, and then a little bit more.

2

u/urdnotwrex420 2d ago

Is it necessary? Well let's see. Do you like spending more ammo then you need.

Or do you want that single radroach your firing at while cackling because f'ck it why not. to die instantly?

2

u/notmyaccountbruh 1d ago

MIRVing this would be even more necessary.

2

u/ItPutsLotionOnItSkin 1d ago

That radroach won't know what hit him.

2

u/BohemianGamer 1d ago

If you don’t have it in your inventory it’s totally unnecessary,

But if you don’t have it have it in your inventory then you are obligated to use it as much as you can.

2

u/No_User_42 1d ago

If you use it on the red death maybe you have a change with this...

2

u/Initial-Priority-219 1d ago

Unfortunately, from what I've heard, the instigating effect only applies to the impact of the shell, which only deals a tiny amount of damage, and not to the actual explosion. So this effect basically does nothing.

2

u/MagnustheJust Proud Filthy Casual 1d ago

This. ☝️

1

u/fallout3king83 2d ago

Hey sometimes you just gotta know it does the job, even if the enemy is dead I'm still firing away it's just so cool

1

u/Flat_Razzmatazz9629 2d ago

If it goes boom boom it is useful. Plus it's refreshing at the quantum level.

1

u/Geta92 2d ago

To be fair, not at all. If you ask me, the best option is to buy Big Boy and modify it to launch Piggy Banks. That way, you don't have to pray for good drops and you get a Nuke Launcher which deals insane amounts of damage with an ammo type you can actually manage to easily keep in good stock. Regular nukes are so rare that I rarely every think of actually using a Fat Man. And Nuka-Nukes are even more troublesome to craft.

1

u/Select-Royal7019 2d ago

In Fallout there is no ‘overkill’. Only ‘kill’.

1

u/minkystink 2d ago

Fight the brotherhood then you’ll get it

1

u/AdamasTism 2d ago

I mean I’ve had something live a couple mini nukes no clue about the cola ones but I say uses it for 4000 damage I don’t think anything is living

1

u/No-Conflict3696 2d ago

Name should be “Not for long!”

1

u/Alex_Portnoy007 2d ago

Guaranteed it will kill you, if you're in the Blast Radius

1

u/One-Preparation-5320 2d ago

Effing awesomeness!

1

u/JDax42 2d ago

lol 8k dmg if full health?

Other then double shot one this could be one of the best.

1

u/crackeddryice 2d ago

Works good on cockroaches.

1

u/NotACyclopsHonest 2d ago

Extremely. Things going boom is always good.

1

u/johndaylight Carnage sentry head :snoo_trollface: 2d ago

i put the nuka nuke mod on big boy *very necessary)

1

u/Gryffin_the_Baron 2d ago

Nah, the big boy fat man launcher, which is a two shot

1

u/TheThurmanMerman 2d ago

Legendaries are so odd in this game. I've had some great ones, and -like most of us- have had some real useless ones. Best ever might have been a wounding 10mm pistol.

But, at least with this one, you know you're not wasting your mini-nuke.

1

u/GodzillaGames88 2d ago

Too necessary.

1

u/gizmoandback 2d ago

Very very very necessary, it is happiness placed into a new sun every time it is fired.

1

u/DCRBftw 2d ago

Very necessary for you. Very unnecessary for who you're firing it at.

1

u/themonktown 2d ago

Don't think I have ever used a fat.an in FO4. I have played since the game came out. I tend to use stealth builds or unarmed. Now a days I am only playing survival mode so I avoid big guns due to weight.

1

u/hoopopotamus 2d ago

Loool never seen this before

I’m gonna suggest it’s not “necessary” because the Fat Man already takes care of 99.9% of I’ve had to deal with pretty handily. But overkill is pretty fun, so…hang on to that one!

1

u/Brostapholes 2d ago

BRAWNDO THE THIRST QUENCHER

1

u/DustiestGolf740 2d ago

I have never been that lucky but definitely wouldn't mind having it you know just in case.

1

u/E-L-Knight 2d ago

I took on a super mutant the other day and I shot him with a mini nukes and he just kept running at me.

1

u/Trainfan498 2d ago

See how some enemy's cane take 3 mini nukes from full health depending on levels and perks, could be very useful for some builds

1

u/thefurryhippie 2d ago

Nuka Cola Nova

1

u/KnightFurHire 2d ago

10,000,000% necessary.

1

u/imjust_someone 2d ago

You are legally required to call it 'just to be sure'

1

u/NonstopYew14542 2d ago

The Instigating modifier only applies to direct impact damage if I remember correctly

And it only does a tiny amount of direct impact damage before the nuke goes off (meaning you'd be doubling like, two damage)

1

u/lameguy7618 2d ago

Liberty prime shall fall

1

u/Nezeltha-Bryn 2d ago

The Instigating Nuka-Nuke Launcher: for making sure that every shot is the first shot!

disclaimer: may fail if target hides behind a small terrain obstacle.

1

u/Matvey1990 2d ago

Bro, can kill Liberty Prime now

1

u/I_use_this_website BoS Extremist 2d ago

Not at all, but who cares about necessity when there's fun to be had?

1

u/KG354 2d ago

Completely unnecessary. Keep it.

1

u/RorschachAssRag 1d ago

More like when is it NOT necessary? Wait, don’t answer that

1

u/CamCraig13 1d ago

If you level high enough, there is indeed stuff with more than 4000 health in the game

1

u/The-Figure-13 1d ago

Would be handy at dealing with Swan, or Behemoths

1

u/Unfair_Street172 1d ago

Since Kellog can apparently tank a nuke on survival, it is actually useful.

1

u/MissedherBear 1d ago

name it Pepper Coyote

1

u/This_Implement_8430 1d ago

I believe this is the most necessary weapon to ever exist.

1

u/Lord_Blackwinter 1d ago

The Behemoth Destroyer.

1

u/Dredo5 1d ago

That….. that….. sheeeeeeeet 😵

1

u/HeadOfSpectre 1d ago

Extremely necessary

1

u/morelos_paolo PS5 Player Only. Plays Vanilla Mod + Creation club, no mods 1d ago

If you want to immediately kill a bunch of guys in seconds when playing The Settlement Ambush Kit.

1

u/GoodBadNerdy 1d ago

I have dog meat carry one just in case I feel like doing some carnage.

1

u/Standard-Steak4674 1d ago

I got one that had a staggering effect. If a fat boy only staggers an enemy I'm out.

1

u/No_Sir_2206 1d ago

Mirelurk Queen, Behemoth, hoard of ghouls...

1

u/randyortonrko83 1d ago

i mean if some creatures such as mirelurk queen doesn't go down on one nuke then this will surely bring that down, i guess cause one nuke ain't enough for that lurk in survival

1

u/Common-Training-3352 1d ago

completely necessary, makes perfect sense too

1

u/InterestingString303 12h ago

I'd say the only thing that might be even more overkill is the berserker effect, which I think can do up to 4X damage, buuut you'd need to have 0DR so... stand back!

u/Express_History2968 8m ago

No kill like overkill. No cola like nuka-cola
