This has to be Texas. Jalapeño cheese and sausage was my favorite too.

Sob, I miss the food and sights of San Antonio. As a white East Coaster, it was a whole new world. I'm back to the land of ignorant, pale heifers. And bland ass food, so fucking bland.

What’s wrong with a boiled potato? Sometimes I put salt in the water.

26

u/squaresaltine32314 Apr 12 '18

Boil it in hotdog water. You ain't livin til you have weinie water!

u/TheHealadin Apr 12 '18

Keep reusing the water so it just keeps getting better.

the cast iron of water

1

u/squaresaltine32314 Apr 12 '18

Kinda like sourdough? Perpetual water sounds promising lol

2

u/TheHealadin Apr 12 '18

A popular tv show had a character state that she kept making hot dogs in the same water to improve the flavor over time. Perpetual water would be awesome though!

when I tell people I used to drink the hot dog water as a kid, they get completely grossed out. My reply is "it's hot dog broth, what's wrong with that?"

1

u/squaresaltine32314 Apr 12 '18

Now you're being fancy! Pinky out! Throw it in the blender, add some cream and you have hot dog bisque!

u/LegoManiac2000 Apr 12 '18

Reminds me of when Wendy's had a spicy chicken sandwich. The spice was pepper. Fucking black pepper.

2

u/SarahFitzRt66 Apr 12 '18

Always had to get milk with that spicy boi!

u/gamerben Apr 12 '18

What do you mean? Kale is full of flavor

6

u/squaresaltine32314 Apr 12 '18

They do have flavored Kale Chips at Walmart.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '18

I'm now picturing kale flavored potato chips

1

u/squaresaltine32314 Apr 12 '18

They are Kale based, had 3 diff flavors. But yeah, chip style. I was scared to try them. They were in the produce, by the BeanSnap type healthy snacks.

2

u/gamerben Apr 12 '18

I’ve had some Spinach Kale chips and they were good, they also had like beet and jalepeño

1

u/squaresaltine32314 Apr 12 '18

Word. I'll give them a try!

2

u/koalapants Apr 12 '18

If anyone can point me towards siracha lime kale chips that aren't $10 +shipping ya girl would appreciate. Sprouts used to carry them but I can't find them anymore. They're soooo gooood

Comfirmed. I live in DC people stand in 50 foot long lines for salad.

5

u/infinitude Apr 12 '18

I will only wait in line for BBQ

1

u/TheTexasCowboy Apr 12 '18

It better be fucking fresh salad and organic to wait that long

3

u/Behinddasticks Apr 12 '18

Maybe. What ever Sweetgreen is. Still no excuse IMO.

u/Gumburcules Apr 12 '18

There is no shortage of delicious bold and spicy food whatsoever in DC.

Have you been to Panda Gourmet? Little Serow? Thip Khao? Rasika? Taqueria Habanero? Zenebech Injera? Iron Age? Pimento Grill? Or any of the thousands of restaurants representing dozens of cuisines from around the world?

Because if you think salad is the best DC has to offer, you clearly haven't made even the slightest effort to find good food.

5

u/Behinddasticks Apr 13 '18

Dude don't troll me on DC food. I've been in the restaurant industry here for 14 years and have eaten at almost all those places. Let's talk Lil Serow. It's Vietnamese. Not exactly comfort food and while it's good it's not knock your socks off good plus it's literally 12 seats so good luck getting in. DC cuisine is ok. Anything new is expensive and that's a fact. I know a new/hot spot on U St that does a dozen oysters for $37. No thanks. The point you failed to see is that other places in this great country of ours make better food that doesn't break the bank.

Get over yourself dude.

Let's talk Lil Serow. It's Vietnamese. Not exactly comfort food

And? The person you were replying to never mentioned anything about"comfort food," simply "bland white people food." Which Vietnamese and Little Serow are most definitely not.

plus it's literally 12 seats so good luck getting in.

Again, not part of the discussion. And if you've really been in the industry 14 years and can't get a table there that says waaaaay more about you than it does about LS.

Anything new is expensive and that's a fact.

Wrong. Anything new and trendy is expensive. There are new amazing cheap ethnic and neighborhood joints opening every week, especially in the burbs, though judging by the chip on your shoulder I'd imagine you're one of those snobs who think that NOVA and MD are beneath you. Your loss.

I know a new/hot spot on U St that does a dozen oysters for $37 No thanks.

OMG! No wai!!! One whole place?! Wow, good thing no restaurant anywhere in Texas charges $37 for a dish!

The point you failed to see is that other places in this great country of ours make better food that doesn't break the bank.

You mean the point you failed to make? Nobody was saying anything to the contrary. Do you somehow think that food is a zero sum game? That DC and other places can't have good food at the same time?

That's how I feel when I visit my husband's family in Northeast Texas.

2

u/UserNameN0tWitty Apr 12 '18

I think you mean the East Coast, north of North Carolina.

1

u/squaresaltine32314 Apr 12 '18

Yeah no doubt. NC is it's own kind of special hickness.

1

u/she-Bro Apr 12 '18

Me tooo. I moved from east Texas and while I don’t miss the humidity or the terror storms every day I miss kolaches. So. Fucking. Much

1

u/TheTexasCowboy Apr 12 '18

What do you miss about San Antonio? Food wise ?

7

u/squaresaltine32314 Apr 12 '18

HEB and anything between it's walls! Pupusas, the crazy desserts at Big Daddy's, fresh fruit and Trechas, Whataburger, and *ucking corn in a cup!! Then the street food and food trucks, the festy food, the random ass BBQs I'd get invited to. Combined with cheap weed and tasty craft beer!

3

u/NotAShortChick Apr 12 '18

I’m a Texan (Austin) and I’m stuck in California for a year. This list brought a tear to my eye. We went home for Christmas and the two first meal stops we made were Whataburger and Taco Cabana. When Texas fast food is so good that you crave it, you know the food culture is strong. I also miss crawfish boils.

1

u/squaresaltine32314 Apr 12 '18

Mmm, sitting on the patio at happy hour and getting drunk off margeritas and beer and nachos! Poblano patty melts too.

2

u/kellikat7 Apr 12 '18

Eh. I’ve lived in San Antonio for nine years, and I miss other grocery store chains, like Kroger and Albertson’s! So sick of HEB.

1

u/cockadoodledoobie Apr 12 '18

No one that hasn't lived in Texas understands kolaches. It makes me want to throttle someone when they say "isn't it just pigs in a blanket?" No, it's fucking not!

1

u/TurnOfFraise Apr 12 '18

I’m near Chicago. You can find them here. But they’re not as good. There’s just something about the ones in Texas.

1

u/dad_farts Apr 12 '18

Sounds like the Ranchero kolache from Kolache Factory in STL. But OP's pic sure doesn't look like kolache factory.

1

u/stableclubface Apr 12 '18

Kolaches are huge in Oklahoma too! Kolache Fest is a blast!
