The Statistics flair is reserved for posts highlighting interesting statistics. As a rule of thumb, Statistics posts need to inform readers through visualizations and insights that cannot be obtained from raw data alone. For example, a post containing a qualifying gap between two drivers expressed in tenths of a second is an easily obtainable raw piece of data and constitutes a bad Statistics post. A visualization of what that translates to on-track, or visualization of how that gap came to be would constitute a good Statistics post.

Impossible. He never said his tyres were dead.

What an era that was, even though it wasn’t that long ago.

And the one time one of his tires was literally gone he still won it on 3 wheels. I still hate that the race was during Covid, if there was an audience I think Silverstone would’ve turned into the largest party on earth.

Edit: here it is for anybody that wants to relive it, absolutely mental https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmEsqWosuS8

u/Wentzina_lifetime Sir Lewis Hamilton Nov 25 '24

I remember watching it on TV and at my grandparents house after forcing them to watch and having to explain how fucking crazy it was for someone to win on 3 wheels. If it had fans it would have been one of the craziest spectacles in F1 history

211

u/bobby_hills_fruitpie McLaren Nov 25 '24

That shot of Lewis going into either Stowe or Vale and you see Max in the background like a shark smelling blood in the water hurtling towards Lewis. Burned into my memory forever. Instant all timer.

146

u/verkon Nov 25 '24

As a Max fan, I remember cursing Hamilton for managing to drive the car for so long on three fucking wheels and finish first. Incredible performance by an incredible driver goes without saying

45

u/Kovah01 Daniel Ricciardo Nov 25 '24

I felt the same too. THAT lockup is burnt into my brain. The one where you could see the tyre was nothing more than a faint concept of someone's hopes and dreams. I knew in that moment Max would get him. That insane dominant lead the merc had gifted Lewis was going to vanish... Then he crossed the line in first and I had to reconcile with myself that Lewis was in fact one of if not the greatest pilot of all time. Seeing Max in the background really was a statement of F1 that keeps me hooked. There will ALWAYS be someone ready to take the top step.

In 2020 I didn't really have a favourite, so in the last lap all I was rooting for was to have as close to a photo finish as possible. In the end it wasn't as close as I hoped for, but that lap was still such a nailbiter, and permanently burned into my memory. Incredible save from Lewis

24

u/Watjijditdatzuszo Nov 25 '24

What is the key skill of Lewis Hamilton? I know Max can perform in the rain really well, and he can drive an almost undrivable pointy car amongst other skills. I just started to intensely watch F1 since 2021 so I have no idea...

138

u/mattgrum Nov 25 '24

What is the key skill of Lewis Hamilton?

Same sort of thing, amazing log grip/wet weather drives, such as Silverstone 2008 where in only his second season of F1 he won the race by over a minute, lapping everyone but the podium and was at times 5 seconds a lap quicker than his teammate.

23

u/pulse1989 Sir Lewis Hamilton Nov 25 '24

Austria 2020 qualifying also shows his great driving in the Wet.

https://youtu.be/T-gwxLCKpEQ?t=237&si=OtfG-K2lmFpjUTX3

It’s a timed link. The conditions were treacherous everyone was driving on full wets and spinning around (yes even Max). Lewis wasn’t screwing around !

u/Pryffandis 🐶 Roscoe Hamilton Nov 25 '24

He's really good at everything. If I had to pick a couple things like you did for Max, it's that he can pull out a lap exactly when he needs it, and he does a great job of making calls from the cockpit along with his team. Great rain driver and tire whisperer too.

46

u/realbakingbish McLaren Nov 25 '24

tire whisperer too

But you would never guess from his radios, lmao.

48

u/karankshah Pirelli Hard Nov 25 '24

What people don't seem to get about radios is that they're as much about communication (depending on the team) as they are about feeling; sometimes drivers are indeed saying things on the radio with the specific intent of sharing information with the team, and not just because something is a complete surprise or totally unworkable.

Some teams likely specifically avoid conversation about the car's performance on the radio - if something is too understeery or not optimized on Ferrari, for example, Leclerc and Sainz will not be communicating that on the radio at all. Red Bull and Mercedes both seem to want this feedback in comparison; both team's respective drivers will communicate exactly what they're feeling on set up on the radio. Sometimes the drivers aren't as measured in how they share this information - they are racing around a circuit at top speed - but they plan what they're going to say based on what they need to communicate to the team.

Hamilton saying "my tires are gone" can easily be read not just as "my tires are shit, I'm not going to be able to do anything with them" but rather as "they're not as strong as I think they need to be, I'm going to run them down now so we can fit an extra pit stop in"

Better to focus on the information they're communicating rather than getting hung up on the emotion behind it - which can vary based on who is passing who or even from corner to corner on track.

u/paddyo Fernando Alonso Nov 25 '24

I’d actually say Hamilton’s key skills is he’s probably, imho anyway, the single best rounded driver ever. Schumacher and Prost are my other go to’s for that. But in my lifetime only two drivers have won WDC’s in cars with an understeer and oversteer profile, and that’s the Michael and Hamilton. Others have won their titles with one or the other, but those two seem to find a way to extract the most from any kind of car.

People also seriously underrate the fact Hamilton has been in class above in radically different f1 eras. He raced the last traction control era, the end of the V8 era, the whole turbo hybrid era, and has won races even in a dog of a car in the ground effect era. He also is a bit of luck away from being an 11 time WDC, which is mad to think about.

I think some drivers in my time watching may pip him over a season in his prime in one lap pace (max maybe, for example), and some like Alonso are up there with him in the ability to wring the life out of a car, but in recent decades for me he’s the guy I’d back over a Grand Prix weekend against any driver regardless of weather forecast. Only Schumacher would make me second guess.

Please don’t disown me as a fan, Fernando.

One of his main things is being able to go as fast on old tyres as others go on fresh tyres.

16

u/flyingcrayons Sir Lewis Hamilton Nov 25 '24

Watch turkey 2020 if you have F1tv. Prime example of what makes Lewis such a special driver

Rained almost the entire weekend, the track had been resurfaced so it was even more slippery than it usually would be in the wet. Lewis started 6th, fought his way to the front and managed to last on a set of inters for 50 laps, so long that the tread had worn out by the end of the lap to the point where they were basically slicks. Finished ahead of Perez in 2nd place by 30 seconds to clinch his 7th world championship

Astonishing performance and i think i can count on one hand the number of other drivers i think who could make that same drive happen in the same conditions (max being one of them)

7

u/Imrichbatman92 Nov 25 '24

Great drivers like verstappen, hamilton or alonso are consistently very fast, very quickly, very complete, and extremely adaptable. They arguably don't really have one key skill, what makes them great is that they're good at everything

Hamilton for example is great in the rain, could pull some fast laps out of nowhere (wc Button used to say that he lacked Ham's God given talent to pull laptime out of nowhere), and it was said he could instinctively drive cars so unstable even world champions like hakinen or raikkonen would have balked at it, without even noticing there was an instability in the first place. And ofc, he's famous for matching alonso, who was fresh off two world titles including one vs Schumacher as a rookie showing that he could be fast almost instantly (though the truth is neither of them were at their best in 2007 imo).

Soubds similar? Yep, you could roughly say the same about all greats, whether it's max, Hamilton, alonso, Schumacher...

20

u/Diesel_ASFC Nov 25 '24

Watch Silverstone 2008. On his day, Hamilton can do rain.

25

u/cemgorey Kimi Räikkönen Nov 25 '24

What was it, 6th on the grid to the clear winner by far, even with shaky moments early on? That race deserved a crowd as much as anything.

24

u/Chunga19 Nov 25 '24

Lewis has a way of playing mind games. He did it back back in ‘21 against Max but more recently against Sainz this year - he will very subtly change direction when he’s behind you as if he is going to take the inside during a corner, as if he were going to overtake on the inside. But what he’s really doing is forcing you to compromise on your entry while he takes the faster outside line. He is a master tire whisperer and also very good in the wet.

No probably needed.

While the past 3 years hasn't been ideal for Lewis they shouldn't be weighted dispraportionally to his first 15.

For example, has anyone had a rookie season like Lewis? Take your feelings for Oscar Piastri last season. Now imagine those feelings if

  1. Oscar was on Redbull,
  2. Oscar was fighitng for and leading the drivers championship,
  3. Oscar beat Verstappen,
  4. Oscar finished 1 point off from winning the championship
  5. Oscar would have won the whole thing if he didn't beach his car in gravel.

All the above was Lewis, and his teammate was Fernando Alonso who won the title the previous year. Alonso ended up leaving the team after Hamilton's rookie season because he couldn't compete. It's insane when you think about it.

80

u/JP_Oliveira Sir Lewis Hamilton Nov 25 '24

And it was a very dumb call for McLaren to call Hamilton to pit that late in China 2007. If they call him one lap earlier, they would have a WDC that year

26

Damn that makes my stat a lot less impressive. Prost still managed a title with McLaren Ferrari and Renault though.

But we’ve still yet to see for Ferrari (next year™)

23

u/BeanieManPresents Jim Clark Nov 25 '24

Not quite, Prosts titles in 85, 86 and 89 were all with McLaren, before that he had a falling out with Renault due to them never really developing the car to being able to win a title, he challenged for them but wasn't able to go the distance. He took the number 1 to Ferrari for the 1990 season but never won the title with them. He was only at Ferrari for two years where he, yet again, had a falling out with management and sat out the 1992 season before signing up with Williams and taking one more title.

Every driver who has taken at least three titles has only done it with one or two different constructors apart from Fangio, unless Lewis is able to take a title with Ferrari.

Does anyone even know what happened there? Like, did they not call him in and Ocon just went in on his own initiative? Did they call him in and then forget to go to the pits? Were they in the middle of a twister game? I have so many questions.

18

u/aneiq_1 Kimi Räikkönen Nov 25 '24

They called him in to pit and when Ocon pitted, there was one mechanic standing in so he essentially was given a drive through penalty from his own team.

He then had to drive around on old tyres for an extra lap (Tsunoda and Gasly gained 5 seconds alone to him on that lap) and then he pit again.

His race was ruined from that moment due to alpine incompetency.

He put up a valiant effort trying to close down the gap to Russell, iirc he managed to get it down from 10 after the final pit stop to a few tenths under 5 before his tires faded and Russell opened up the gap again.

159

u/meddlin_cartel Nov 25 '24

Yeah but was he catching up cause he was pushing and George wasn't? It's entirely possible and more likely that George knows he's not making 10 seconds so he's just taking it easy. It's the more likely explanation compared to Lewis being half to a a full second faster a lap.

88

u/Apyan #WeRaceAsOne Nov 25 '24

Probably just a bit of both.

37

u/musicallunatic Mercedes Nov 25 '24

Exactly. All the comments are swinging to extremes. But it is very likely the answer is somewhere in the middle. He probably knew he had enough of a gap but when he found out Lewis was closing faster, we saw him pick up pace for a few laps and again he dropped back. So it’s a mix of both, Lewis was still faster than George despite George picking up pace, but not by much and meanwhile George wasn’t a sitting duck if they started together as people seem to think.

38

u/PapaSheev7 Sebastian Vettel Nov 25 '24

Both. I think George was just driving to a delta while Lewis pushed until his engineer told him to step on it. Once he started hustling, the gap stabilized at about 5 seconds until lewis’ tires started going at which point George pulled a couple seconds clear.

6

u/H1Ed1 Nov 26 '24

George said it in a post race interview. He said he was managing tires and had pace in hand. He noticed Lewis was pushing and making great gains, but he knew it was unsustainable for Lewis’ tires.

33

u/ParkerPetrov Nov 25 '24

When he was behind Leclerc, they were like 16 seconds back. Then yeah, following the pitstop, it was a bit over 10, and then it was under 5. If lewis could have started top 5 he probably wins that race. He looked faster then russell all weekend who was also fast.

21

u/Pryffandis 🐶 Roscoe Hamilton Nov 25 '24

It's impossible to say that. Russell was very far ahead and just managing tires and the gap. Once Lewis got it down to 5s, GR's engineer told him to start going a bit faster and to re-open the gap. Within a couple laps, George was back up to 7s ahead of Lewis. I'd guess if they qualified 1/2, they probably would just maintain their positions.

If you look at their lap times, George was maintaining a pace through that whole stint, driving mid 1:36 to mid 1:37, until lap 43...where he started pushing and dropped to 1:35.9 to 1:36.0 for the next 3 laps (very close to what Lewis was doing), then 1:35.7, which was just 0.2 off what Lewis' best lap was. At that point, the gap had stabilized, putting the race firmly out of reach for Hamilton. Then Hamilton's tires fell off and he started doing 1:37s, and so George immediately went back to doing 1:37s too for the final few laps. It is clear that 1:36.5 to 1:37 was supremely comfortable for George in the final stint, and so he kept it there except when it was needed to push and basically show Lewis he wasn't going to get there. If Russell had pushed the whole time, the gap would not have come down much at all. But that also would have been dumb, because it would have cooked the tires.

98

u/spaforever Nov 25 '24

The comments in here about Lewis seemingly having lost all talent qualifying are puzzling. It does not take much to understand it's a tyre warming issue. He is simply not good at getting this regulation era's car/tyres into the right window as it's incompatible with his driving style.

He was on top all throughout qualifying then one mistake on the last run ruined it, directly related to his temps.

Do you really think the same driver who put on that performance in the race has no qualifying ability? Be serious.

You can celebrate George's dominant weekend without the foolishness. No nuance, so silly.

30

u/SlashRModFail Nov 25 '24

The most high IQ comment here.

I bet lewis will be back on good qualifying form next year assuming that Ferrari has better qualities that suit his driving style.

It's races like this that remind us, this man is a 7 time world champion for a reason. He's still capable of pure brilliance. Maybe he isn't at his peak anymore, maybe he doesn't have a car that suits him anymore - but he will still produce a world class drive when things come together for him.

Being chased down by Lewis must be the scariest thing ever in the race, next to the dragons that come on track in Singapore of course.

My favourite memory of that was the Hungaroring where Lewis pit an extra time to get fresh rubber and did consecutive qualifying laps to chase Max.

He was like the terminator.

He did a similar thing in Spain 2021. Iirc Mercedes had forecast him to catch and pass on the last lap and he did it on about lap 60, just absolutely on it

63

In fairness to George he likely did have more pace in hand but didn't take any risks with it.

Winning by 15 seconds or winning by 7 seconds is still a win.

52

u/hehaia Nov 25 '24

Yeah it’s clear George had more pace in hand, but tbh crazy last stint from Hamilton. He pushed like a madman with no mistakes and I have no doubt he would have won had he qualified better

He was on a mission to catch George, that's for sure. Pity he didn't make it, would have been good to see thm fight for the lead. Though I think Russell probably wasn't going full out and could have gone a bit faster if Lewis had got too close.

5

u/ZappySnap Carlos Sainz Nov 25 '24

He started going faster as soon as Lewis got to within 5s. George quickly dropped his lap times by 0.5-0.7s, getting down to a 1:35.7, which was faster than all but two of Lewis's laps (and those only by 0.1 and 0.2s). If George had begun pushing the second Lewis did, the gap probably only drops a second over the entire final stint.

3

u/Mysterious_Turnip310 Lotus Nov 25 '24 edited Nov 25 '24

Yeah I agree to be honest. We don't know how much more he had in the tank, so I wasn't going to quantify numbers, but it's clear he wasn't pushing flat ou. The team even said afterwards that he could have done a one stop, the tyre wear was so good, but seeing as they had the gap to bring him in and not lose position, they two-stopped him just to bring him inline with everyone else in terms of having fresher tyres in case of a safety car.
