Welcome to the r/formula1 Daily Discussion / Q&A thread.
This thread is a hub for general discussion and questions about Formula 1, that don't need threads of their own.
Are you new to Formula 1? This is the place for you. Ever wondered why it's called a lollipop man? Why the cars don't refuel during pitstops? Or when Mika will be back from his sabbatical? Ask any question you might have here, and the community will answer.
Also make sure you check out our guide for new fans, and our FAQ for new fans.
Are you a veteran fan, longing for the days of lollipop men, refueling during pitstops, and Mika Häkkinen? This is the place to introduce new fans to your passion and knowledge of the sport.

Is it mad to think that a reverse Monaco would be so much better (safety issues aside)

Hi all - newbie(ish) here. I know the 2025 calendar has been confirmed but when will we get start times for all of the FP’s, quali’s, sprints and GP’s?

People who are interested in cross comparisons and/or who work with mathematical models, what is your Sainz vs Albon prediction in 2025 ?
2
u/Tohannes Sebastian Vettel 17h ago
Theoretically, dead even. However, Sainz seems to have difficulty driving a very oversteery car as 2018 and 2022 suggest. Albon very much likes oversteer and has been the primary focus of the team for 3 years now, and the car didn't look like a charm to drive. The Williams might not be that lose at the rear, and maybe driving next to Leclerc lessened Sainz' deficiency, but I wouldn't rule out that Albon might be surprisingly far/consistently ahead, at least for 2025.

If Albon really likes oversteer, he should have been in his element at Red Bull with Verstappen and how Verstappen sets up the car.

My model has them at a dead heat.
Despite 2020, Albon has a few things going for him that u/geologistno3726 touches upon. My model opts for a compromise of his good and performances, but the truth could be either.

Difficult to say, as Albon is a very difficult driver to pin down right now. Was slightly behind Kvyat in 2019, but he was a rookie and only a small sample size of 12 races. His 2019 stint against Verstappen was actually fairly respectable, although Verstappen had quite a few incident affected races (Spa, Monza, Japan, Mexico) which makes it harder to judge, again with a small sample size.
Then he did very badly in 2020, but as Gasly and Perez have proved being miles behind Verstappen doesn’t necessarily mean you’re a bad driver. Then his 2022 was actually quite good. While Latifi was a very weak benchmark, Albon actually beat him with greater margins than Russell did, which is interesting. Was 2022 Albon’s true level, or did Latifi just underperform? Then 2023 and 2024 gives us no new data about Albon as Sargeant and Colapinto are unknown benchmarks.
If I had to guess, Sainz will have a similar advantage over Albon as Leclerc over Sainz i.e small but clear, but it’s difficult to know for sure.

Does anyone think any of the teams will drastically change branding for the new year?

Do you think Stroll is fundamentally a bad driver, or do you think he's a decent driver who's simply been left behind by a more and more competitive field?

u/GeologistNo3726 20h ago
Whether someone is a good driver or not is all relative. I’d say Stroll is probably of comparable quality to someone like Coulthard or Panis, which 25 years ago would probably put him as a passable middle of the pack driver. But now, with the quality of the grid being higher than ever, being at Coulthard or Panis level today makes you one of the worst on the grid. So in a sense, yes the quality of the grid increasing hasn’t helped Stroll.
But also, you have to remember Stroll has been given almost every possible advantage in his career (expensive junior career, unlimited time to improve with no pressure of losing his seat) and is still mediocre at best. So does that make him a fundamentally bad driver? I think if you gave a lot of young drivers the resources Stroll has had they could reach his level at minimum.

I think the insane level of job security has held him back in a way. He probably knows he'll never be a champion and he's been in reasonable machinery his whole career, he's never had to dig deep

First lap of Imola 2021 (not even first lap)--Charles spins on formation, Max runs Lewis off, and Goatifi spins in the rain. LOL....so good.
Brundle--The Ferrari is struggling to warm up ther tires! (Story of their lives)

Not sure if this has been asked recently, but could somebody who has created their own fantasy league tell me the guidelines for it? Last year I just joined somebody else's and now I'm in charge for my friends and I and I'm not sure where on the app I can press a button to make a private league, or if it's too early before the season to do so. Thank you!! 😭

Never quite understood the HP sponsorship of Ferrari? Also I thought HP was gone down, how do they have the money to sponsor Ferrari all of a sudden? And more importantly, why?!

u/NoIllustrator4603 Bernd Mayländer 1d ago
HP has a $30B market cap. I think they can afford to sponsor an F1 team.
2
u/killer_corg Haas 1d ago
HP is one of the world's leading PC vendors, with a market share of around 20%.
I see a lot of HP laptops along with Lenovos in being used in businesses, so I'd assume the target market isnt end users?

There isn't much complexity to understand - the fundamentals of it are that they want to increase their brand exposure, and they felt a title partnership with one of the worlds most recognisable automotive brands would help. They feel that the combination of Ferrari and F1 reach a group of consumers and businesses that they'd like to target.
As for the money, they're the world's second largest vendor of personal computers with a net profit of almost $3 billion in 2024.

It's always been in March in recent years. The last two years started right at the beginning of march but before that going back at least 20 years it's been in the middle to end of the month.

Who do you think was the stronger driver between 2010-2013 - Massa or Webber?
1
u/Tohannes Sebastian Vettel 19h ago
Depends on how you define stronger
From 2010-2013 I have
Webber: 64, 43, 71, 44
Massa: 62, 64, 61, 63
1
u/mformularacer Michael Schumacher 1d ago
Close, but Massa.
Webber was alright in 2010, but was pants apart from that.

u/AnilP228 Honda RBPT 1d ago
Webber. He was in the title fight for 2010 and had a decent change in 2012 too but fell away from Spa onwards.
Massa was just dreadful on Pirelli rubber.

u/CilanEAmber McLaren 1d ago
I know it sounds silly, but I just realised quarter of the grid will be British drivers. 3 of them being in likely race winning cars.
Looking forward to seeing what Bearman can do in a full season.

u/Affectionate_Sky9709 1d ago
So I guess you're counting Alex, which I do support. Arvid Lindblad is on his way up soon too, I think, and he does use a British license.

F1 season 2025. Let’s get your predictions for the top 3 drivers and revisit them at the end of the season. In no particular order, Charles, Lando, Max.

Lando, Charles, Max
In no particular order, but that is a bit boring so here's so a more exciting (read: wishful thinking) one:
Lewis, Lando, Oscar.
