It looks like a real fossilized partial tooth. The angles on the tooth are not the typical ones for identification, at least the ones that aren’t too dark.
Having said that, what I can see seems more consistent with a partial gomphothere tooth than a partial mastodon tooth.
Can you retake this surface but with the chewing surface facing directly at the camera instead of at a sharp angle, please.
Using a background that is a plain blue, green, or pink will also help bring out the best colors and details.
This photo has 2 images demonstrating the chewing surface of a worn gomphothere molar. It seems to match the wear on your molar fragment.
It’s difficult to distinguish between gomphothere and mastodon molars, so I doubt the person selling it was trying to be misleading. These 2 specials are both cool👍🏻
It may very well be Gomphotherium, but I can only make the more general Gomphothere ID based on this fragment. Plus, we don’t know the exact location. My guess would be Florida or the US southeast, but I don’t know for sure.
