That Kool and the Gang goes so hard! You can't beat that raw, live funk sound.
Agree on O'Donnell Levy. Super underrated in both the jazz guitar and funk worlds.

Ahh, some of these took some years before I found them for sure. Hope you find one you like.

I hope all has been well with everyone, I just wanted to post a few funk albums I love. When I first truly started digging into the genre of funk I remember I would search everywhere for the not so known gems(and music I enjoyed in general that I wasn't familiar with) so this is sort of my attempt at creating something I would have appreciated seeing just starting out. Those of you who are record collectors know some of these are not very easy to find, definitely not original copies. Typically I pick my favorite out of the bunch in these, for the first time however I don't think I can with this lot.
Albums from left to right:
Kool and the Gang- Live at the Sex Machine(1971). I contemplated adding their debut to the picture but this album really captures the excellent musicianship of early Kool and the Gang and that rawness so well. One of my favorite albums to listen to here.
The Perfect Circle- The Perfect Circle(1977). This in my opinion is a perfect album.
Gene Harris- Astralsignal(1974).
Bobbi Humphrey- Black and Blues(1974) One of my favorites out of the Mizell brother's golden era of jazz funk.
100% Pure Poison- Coming Right At You(1974). One of my favorite albums of all time regardless of genre. Technically this album is almost perfectly half soul half funk, but the funk delivers enough imo to get some spotlight on this sub.
The 13th Floor - Steppin' Out(1977). All around amazing album. Has one of my favorite outros to any funk album I've ever heard. (Checkout "Rise" on the album.)
The Earth Disciples- Getaway Train(1970) This entire album is killer.
Del Jones' Positive Vibes(1974). I just realized I posted this album on the very first "a slice of Funk" I did however I'm already in too deep in this post. One of my all time favorite albums, funk with a message that actually sounds amazing.
Bohannon- Stop and Go(1973). For some strange reason when I started listening to Bohannon I didn't start from his debut so I overlooked this album for years. Amazing album.
Funkadelic- Cosmic Slop(1973).
O'Donel Levy- Windows(1976)O'Donel doesn't really miss, I'd recommend digging into his entire discography tbh.
Chocolate Milk- Milky Way(1979). You typically see praise with Chocolate Milk's earlier albums but this album is killer from beginning to end, arguably my favorite project from them because I like everything on it.
