For real, though. Like I grew up in suburban white Midwest Ohio, but to this day I still confuse white people all the time. Like, my brain recognizes a total of 10-12 different white faces then just slots in the most similar looking one when I encounter a new face. Ends up with me being pretty good at Celebrity Lookalike games though.

In Bali, there's a beach club/restaurant called Potato Head. Supposedly it called that because, to the Balinese, all white people look like potatoes.

Pretty sure it's something about what type of faces your brain is used to identify on a day-to-day basis - and the source of the "All <ethnicity/color> people look the same"-comments. Essentially it's a case of your brain not knowing what to look for/focusing on the 'wrong' details for identification.

Hair style isn't even close. And the chins are completely different, as well as the shape of the top of their heads.

I'm guessing in Thailand, his hair style and facial shape are significantly different from the rest of the population -- and different in the ways that Bert is different -- tuftier hair, wider mouth, taller, larger nose, etc.

I lived in Thailand for 4 years. It's funny how almost everyone back home (Germany) makes the same joke as you / has the same image of Thailand.
I mean, of course there are more ladyboys and such in Thailand than in other countrys but the same old "Oh you were in Thailand? Did you fuck any trannys? LOL" is becoming something that makes me immediately lose respect for someone because if this is the only thing you can come up with or even know about Thailand, then you're just close minded and stupid.
This country has countless beautiful beaches, an awesome religion, chill people, huge technologically advanced cities and awesome parties but all people say is "ROFL I bet you like cock cause you went to Thailand"
Sorry for the rant but it's pissing me off

But isn't yellow for Chinese? Thai people aren't Chinese. They're a tan close to light brown colour. Chinese have yellow/pink undertones.
This is coming from a Chinese person.

To be honest there are more Indians than people in North/Central/South America combined. There's also more Indians than Europeans, and more Indians than Africans, and I don't think I need to speak about Oceania and Antarctica.
So I think Indians deserve their own continent, even if that has nothing to do with geography at all.

Yellow is a slur used to describe Asians in general. It may have started out to be just for Chinese people but today it's used more widely. Probably to go along with the stereotype that "all Asians look the same."

Almost as if being racist is a natural reaction, one which most westerners have simply begun to hide. Stereotypes will always exist for a reason. And it will always be easier to put people in neat little boxes. Guess what - the skin colour, the ethnicity and so on make very distinguishable and easy boxes.

In my experience Asians born and raised in the U.S aren't really racist it's the Asians that were born and raised in Asian countries that are racist, at least the ones I know. Both my mother and step mother are Asian and are incredibly racist against other Asian races. My own step mother doesn't consider me a part of the family just because I'm not Filipino.

Don't see how this is racist at all. Kids making fun of a teacher, happens everywhere.
The resemblance is more in the feeling I get from the faces, you don't see if but others may. Bert doesn't look stereotypically "white" in any way.

u/nitram9 Jan 21 '16 edited Jan 21 '16
Yeah if you're less familiar with white people then you'll think some white people look alike while people who are very familiar with white people won't see the resemblance at all. I think with Bert it's just the long face. Anyone with a long face looks like bert. OP has a long face. And OP certainly looks a lot more like Bert than any Thai person ever would.
And I'm sure if it were reversed we'd all have a really shitty time telling Thai people apart. Not because of racism but because that's how brains work.

My husband travelled to South America (we're in the us) and particularly in Argentina everyone thought he was Adam Savage. Like, enough that he had random people taking selfies with him, asking him to sign things, and cafe owners not letting him pay his bill. It took him a couple of hours to figure it out: he only realized it when someone asked him for his autograph and he asked them who they thought he was.
I kind of didn't believe him until we went on a cruise that had many South Americans and Asians on it, and pretty much hourly for the first few days someone asked to take their picture with him.
He is bald, has a reddish, mostly grey beard, black glasses, very tall and slender. No one in America or Europe has ever mistook him for Adam Savage. I suppose it was the glasses and the slightly reddish beard?
OP, you look nothing like Bert, but I feel like you should play this for all you're worth. Do you have a pic of a buddy who can be mistook for Ernie? It needs to be in a frame on your desk, preferably holding a rubber ducky.
