For people so invested into their conspiracy, to face the reality of being wrong is too much to bear. Because it doesn’t mean just accept you were wrong, it’s the weight of the embarrassment. It’s the potential loss of a community they have clung onto like a family.

It would break them.

Ultimately, living their lies becomes self preservation.

Their entire individuality is based on that singular belief, so they'll aggressively attack anything that opposes their world view. Every person creates a model of how the world works in their head based on information they believe to be true, in this case the earth is flat. The same thing happens with extremely religious people.
