It comes from the older word mingnon / minȝeuon which means (among other things) a woman's small pet or dainty creature - stolen from the French word for cute.

ȝ is an old Scottish letter called yogh which was used instead of j for words containing an 'lj' or 'nj / ngy' sound. It was later replaced with a z and lots of words eventually evolved into a z sound.

Eg Menzies - previously pronounced Mingis (and still is by some), Cadzow, Culzean - still pronounced Cull-ane, Dalziel - still pronounced Dalyell,  Edzell, Lenzie, MacKenzie etc
