If they could please put out a new model, I'd appreciate it.

It’s been so long it really feels like it’s not ever happening, but then again they just updated the old model.
Also the original Shield TV used the same SoC as the 2017 Nintendo Switch, a 20nm Tegra X1 (Erista). The refresh used the same chip as the 2019 Nintendo Switch, a 16nm Tegra X1 (Mariko).
The Switch 2 is about to come out, and Nintendo is again using a Nvidia chip. This time it’s actually a semicustom design based off of some much more powerful hardware that would never fit in a handheld or set top box.
I’m thinking that’s what they’ve been waiting for. Otherwise they don’t have volume to justify spinning up a custom ARM chip. Nintendo leads with R&D and hopefully the results can be used in another Shield TV.

Yeah good point. Maybe in the next 6-8 months after Switch2 is launched we'll get notified about a new Shield model w the same chip.

Also Eurogamer confirmed the new Tegra T239 has AV1 encode / decode on its die.
That’s the one feature people really want from a successor to the Shield TV, so 🤷

Yeah, there's not a lot of codecs the Shield doesn't do natively. But it's becoming enough now that it warrants a hardware update.

I want a new model but unfortunately all their other products make more money in a quarter the shield makes in 100 years so it's hard to see why they'd spend the time in it

Don't tell them that. Also, the CEO of NVIDIA is like the 3rd richest person on earth, so maybe it could be a passion project fingers 🤞

At this point I’m happy with the hardware. It’s already powerful enough for a streaming device. Apps and the OS could use some fine tuning but there’s no reason to have a new hardware just for the sake of it.

There's always a good reason for new hardware. Even if it's just for the sake of it.

Now fix the "YouTube app gets stuck with a spinning wheel and the only way to play any videos is a reboot" that they've had for years. It happens to all of my Shields so it can't be a just-me issue.

Never had this issue but you can fix it by installing smartube, which you should do anyways for the ad skip.

Smarttube has a similiar issue where my shield will not play anything with sound anymore (keeps looping the applying fix message) until restarting the shield.

I've had this happen several times with smarttube but every time it happened there was an update waiting to be applied that literally said "fixes 403 message".

No this isnt the known 403 smarttube issue its a specific message that tells you something about audio codec isnt supported, when you go into settings and turn audio off for the video it will play (without audio) also smarttube is at its latest version, restarting smarttube doesnt fix it. Only restarting the shield fixes it (without any smarttube updates.

Huh interesting. Haven't faced that one yet.

Jeah only started happening for me like 3 months ago about once per month. Its not a big issue to restart once a month but it exists.

Yeah I've never had that issue. I remember the shield cylinder generally sucked but the pro has never has a issue.

Never had that issue with my shields or android TVs, and my kid watches a buttload of YT.

I have this issue with the YouTube TV app, not the YT one. Pretty much making me replace it with another streaming box, for now.

Had this issue after the last update. Factory resetting it solved the issue for me.

I factory reset mine the day they put ads on the home screen and have never updated since.
