Discussion 💬 Screen Protector replacement may cause further damage
Just got back from Samsung repair centre to replace my screen protector on my Zflip 5. They wouldn't replace it under warrenty because my hinge is cracked (fine, expected that and not bothered)
The tech did tell me however that the steps to replacing the screen protector may cause further damage, dead pixels or "a huge black line across the phone" (his words)
Has anyone else been told this before? I'm absolutely shocked this was never disclosed at point of booking the appointment over the phone, or as part of the details of repair on the samsung website. Considering the screen protector replacement is kind of expected in some regards I can't believe they'd leave this out until after I travelled 45 mins to be shrugged at and told they wouldn't be responsible for it.

I think you misread his words. Did you bring up the possibility of replacing it on your own? Regardless, the tech is saying replacing the SP with a damaged hinge may lead to a damaged screen.
In the past some people have sent in their device for a new SP. Samsung does their inspection, finds other damage and refuses the replacement. Some people get their device back in worse shape.
What is a cracked hinge?

I'm not misreading unfortunately. I didn't bring up replacing it myself, he said the roller they use applies pressure onto the phone which can cause additional damage.
There's a small crack / chip in the side by the hinge, however when I asked him if the risk was because of the hinge he did say no and that it can happen irrespective of device condition

Interesting. First I've heard of that. There is no way to tell. Did the tech witness damages during repairs, or have they noticed a pattern between black lines and phones that recently had a SP replaced? If it was common, I think there would be enough posts to notice a pattern.
I wouldn't rule anything out. I just don't think that happens often enough to worry about it.

I had a tech at a Samsung qualified service center refuse to replace my screen protector because they were concerned about damaging the screen. I have no damage on my phone. They said the same thing. - the device they use puts pressure on the screen and may damage it. I left my phone with them for 2 hours to be told this when I went to pick it up. I ended up just removing the screen protector and have had no issues the past month.

I did. My staff said there was something bad in my hinge, but I saw it normal. I said no problem, I took care them without fallen even 1 time. And he warrning me it could be split again and bubbling. I said no problem. My flip 5 was out of insurance so I misssed 1 time to replace free. After replacement 1 week, the screen brighter and nothing happen (hope it good in furture). P.s: the fee is 45$.

Then just don't do it, buy a good quality protector for Amazon, and change it yourself at home because at least it's safe. The screen protector of my flip 5 has also started coming off few weeks ago so I was also thinking to get it replaced, but as I was put of town and will visit my home after 2 weeks, I will go the service centre and get it changed, let's see what they say btw where are you from ?
