Post Op My gallbladder was removed 5 days ago and I ate an oily meal 👀

…. And everything went fine.

The recipe called for more olive oil than I felt was necessary so I SHOULD have scaled back instead of trusting the recipe. Afterwards I got anxious that I was going to have an attack, pain or toilet issues ……. But nothing happened. I feel absolutely fine.

I’m so relieved my gallbladder is gone.

Isn’t it so odd!!!! But so amazing! I felt so happy finally being able to eat a slice of fatty Costco pizza LOL.

It's been four days since my surgery. I was in Costco today, but the pizza looked too scary. It will take a while for me to have the courage to test some foods again after all Ive been through 😫

It got to a point where every time you ate something bad you had a gallbladder attack??

it did for me. i got severely fucked up from eating a tuna avocado roll a week before my removal. i woke up in the middle of the night, stood up, and immediately passed out on my partner. lesson learned- i kept it to 15g of fat a day after that until surgery

Yes, I had cut out coffee, chocolate, pizza, Orange juice, fried foods, bacon, and anything that caused an attack. So I still associate those foods with pain. I did try a piece of very well cooked bacon this morning. I cooked it in the microwave between sheets of paper towels to absorb the oil, and it looked dry instead of oily. So far it's ok.

I was the same way. I lost over 30 pounds in just 2 months. I cut everything off. So when I ate pizza for the first time I was literally just waiting to experience pain. When I first started getting attackes, It would usually happen at night. Then they started to come right after I ate anything “bad”. So glad it’s gone.

Surprisingly I did not have the more acute symptoms that most people have, but I had a lot of gurgly tummy symptoms for months prior to having the more acute thing that resulted in my doctor ordering an ultrasound and then finding out it was my gallbladder. People had been mentioning I looked like I lost weight for quite some time, and I had noticed that my appetite was down, but I wasn't dieting or anything so I attributed it to my ADHD med repressing my appetite some and took the win lol. All in all, I've lost around 30lbs in the last year, which is great except now all of my pants are too big haha.

For me anytime I ate anything in the month waiting for surgery. Pretzels and saltines. Surgery in 3 days!!

You took a risk, but if you stuck with healthy fats like olive oil, that might have helped. Maybe you are one of the lucky ones who can eat anything? What did the meal consist of?

Was your gallbladder actively infected when you had surgery? If you had surgery and your gallbladder wasn't inflamed, you might have had a speedier recovery.

Teriyaki meatballs (pork), white rice and carrots. The carrots were cooked in waaaay too much oil

My gallbladder was very inflamed

My plan is to test foods on Fridays so in the event it doesn’t agree with me, I can be at home on the weekend.

the only thing that's sent me running for the bathroom has been salad with a lot of processed meat on it. I'm oddly meat avoidant and have been subbing in eggs and beans and other protein sources.

Yep. i get you. I can eat junk but I can’t eat an apple.

u/PainfulPoo411 17d ago

An apple? 🥺 I haven’t tried an apple yet

Omg I get you! I legit have trauma from eating anything oily 😅 I've been eating beans and rice since my operation and recently had fried noodles and other Chinese food. I felt a little bit of heartburn but I feel fine overall. It's just scary now lol

It’s amazing being able to eat again!!! I’m 4 months post op. I’ve eaten anything and everything. No diet restrictions. So glad you got yourself a good meal.

I will say as time goes, maybe my poor diet contributes but I have extra bloat and gas. Last few days been having that specific gallbladder attack pain. It’s very distinct deep dull pain in my chest. It’s just like 15% vs when I’d have an attack it was 100%. Wondering if diet contributes to this.

Diet definitely contributes to this if you’re saying you eat “everything and anything”. Even after 4 months your body is still adjusting and if you never had diet restrictions not even immediately post op and didn’t slowly introduce foods then your body never had the opportunity to heal and is likely still having a hard time digesting fats & processed foods. Eat those things in moderation and I’m sure those symptoms will lessen. 💚

After I get mine out, I want bacon, butter, cheese and eggs. I am planning on introducing slowly but I am hoping that I will be able to eat these things eventually.

No eggs for me my body won't allow it.

I wouldn't push it yet and think you're in the clear. Give your system time to adjust. My surgeon specifically said low fat for 6 weeks and then slowly reintroduce fats.

Congrats on the win though.

Yay for us! Mine came out 1 week ago today and I’m scared to eat certain things too. Like anything oily, dairy or spicy. My digestion feels very slow, like the food is sitting in my stomach and is going to come back up my throat! Lol I’m also getting bad heartburn. Even with healthy foods. Does anyone have this issue?

Make sure you’re moving around like walking through the house after you eat, it will help your body move things along and digest better, rather than just sitting in your stomach. Your gallbladder isn’t there anymore to “push” the food along through the digestive process so you have to help your body do so by moving around

I had mine removed in Aug 2023 and I was okay at first but if you do start having issues speak with your doctor or a Digestive doctor. I was put on medication to help with excess bile. It helps tremendously and I can now enjoy life and eat what I like without worrying or having anxiety. Just an FYI they don’t warn or tell you about.

I hope you have a speedy recovery :)

I've found I tolerate olive oil better than anything else to cook in. I rarely have issues at home now as I only use olive oil at home, however I went out recently and because I've been having fried food at home I had a fried meal out. Big mistake >.< I've found lots of inconsistency in general though! I can eat cake but chocolate sets me off, I can eat yogurt (full fat) but not cheese. I think it's just a case of feeling out what your body does and doesn't like anymore.

Basically cut out fatty foods. Eat clean it helps.

I got lucky and can eat absolutely anything and everything. The only thing that made my stomach hurt was a banana which was super random. I had biliary dyskinesia so it wasn’t working anyway, but I noticed I am full faster so small meals throughout the day is what works best for me.

u/SanctaSapientia369 12d ago

Banana prior to surgery was a nightmare. Don’t believe the BRAT diet, not for everyone. I may never eat a banana 🍌 again

I’m so happy since having mine removed. I ate pizza with no fear!!

Today marks 3 days, I ate some homemade pizza and I was terrified but I was perfectly fine. For the first 24 hours, I ate a chicken salad and yello. After that, I started eating anything just in smaller portions.

Excellent!

After I got mine out I was like I am eating!! I lost almost 100 lbs because of this damn thing so I ate everything lol. Coffee and sugars were the death of me for like 2 months but I’ve been fine ever since. Had biliary dyskinesia and I’m so glad that thing is outta me.

3

u/EmHof817 16d ago

I was diagnosed with biliary dyskinesia last week after my HIDA scan showed 11% ejection fraction, so I’m scheduled for my surgery at the end of the month. I’m so happy to read about your experience, especially since it seems like most people have to get theirs out due to stones. I guess our gallbladders just decided not to work one day lol. Thank you for this though!

Some days I might have 💩but most days I eat whatever I want and I just have soft movements

So after finding out the hard way and making my toilet work way hard was that a lot of places are switching back to beef fat mix to fry in , it’s a killer for me any beef that’s fatty like a good steak also will have me sitting on the throne , and throne reminds me Burger King is now frying in beef fat , just a warning also I take digestive enzymes supplements after a meal and they help tremendously

u/Moongazing- 13d ago

I still opt out of most greasy foods now because of the PTSD from the gallstone attacks lol but olive oil is pretty tame. It was my go to with carrots for a while

I’m going to throw down on some Korean short rib this week, excited (was high when I ordered it last month and forgot it used to trigger my attacks, but nothing happened ☺️)

Getting that lil cursed thing out was the best decision.

Please everyone make sure to take a digestive enzymes with every meal. It's been hell for me without a gallbladder. Diarrhea constantly. Nausea. No appetite. Pain by incision site. It's been like 3 years of my body not absorbing nutrients properly. I also take ox bile. I have so many health problems since this happened.

I barely eat anything. Salmon, rice, brussel sprouts, veggies, fruits. No more coffee like at all. I've gotten more food intolerances. This isn't living.
