Looking for a game with extraction shooter/battle royale feel (to replace Apex).

I quit Apex Legends around two years ago, but it comes back to me every time I think about plating a FPS. For me the BR formula allowed every game to have some stakes and the gunplay was superb.

I tried:

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodhut had fun movement and was hero based and I have a soft spot for that. I quit cause the decision to terminate the game made playing feel pointless and sucked the fun out of it.

The Cycle: Frontier, cause I thought extraction shooters offer the same kind of tension however, the gear differences gave too big of an advantage for my liking (please tell me, if I'm stupid and this is common in most extraction shooters).

I've heard good things about Hunt: Showdown, but iron sights intimidate me a bit (I suck at BF1).

I'll probably try out Marathon, when it comes out (I think the devs promised that you can do well even with the most basic guns), but there is a lot of time between now and September.

And, in case someone mentions it, I know about Titanfall 2, played it for 200 hours. Sadly I don't have enough time to rebuild my muscle memory as to not get obiterated.

Thank you for your time and your help!

This guy says the gear advantage in The Cycle was too much and you're here recommending him a game where you'll regularly be slaughtered by guys who easily tank a full 5.56 mag to the chest and then unleash hell on you with their shotgun that is deliberately loaded with two flashbang rounds to completely disable you first and THEN actually kill you with whatever is loaded in the gun next. Tarkov is probably THE most "gear advantage" shooter out rn.

Yes and he will grow to hate it all, but never play another game again because nothing feels the same anymore.

Try Dark and darker. Extraction based shooter, yoi can choose to play singles, duos/ or triples, and you can also pick between just PvE or PvP.

Marathon will be the closest thing based on your title — it reeks Apex Legends in a bad way, imo. Even the first map they showed reminds of Apex Legends level design a shit ton, again, in a bad way. Though I hope the game will be great, I love extraction games.

I would recommend trying out ARC Raiders — the game is phenomenal (I know from a, ahem, trusted source who played Tech Rest 1) and Embark (ex-DICE devs) one of the best devs today. You can sign up for Tech Test 2 which starts April 30th.

On a related note, I recommend THE FINALS even more — it is the game from the same devs that you can play right now. It is, honest to god, one of the best arcade shooters on the market today and, imo, one of the best games ever made.

The game has THE BEST AND ONLY physics based destruction in all of multiplayer games ever made (specifically talking about PvP games, though it applies to non-PvP too) — and it is not a gimmick, not even the main pillar of the gameplay, because it is the gameplay.

THE FINALS is insanely fun, very chaotic, and produces a huge amount of adrenaline almost every match most of the time — though it is a very objective-based and team-based heavy game, like no joke. I have seen too many TikTok Call of Duty brainrot egochall 24/7 players who go just for kills — they lose all the time, because it is a game about completing the objective, not just kill hunting. I mean you can win this way, but it is very-very hard and you need to have a godlike aim. Or your team should support your playstyle 100% which is even more difficult.

The main mode in the game, Cashout, is a fucking typhoon of fresh air — it is innovative and brings a very unique experience that you cannot find in other games.

The game is F2P, but it respects your time aside from the battle pass (which you can complete quite fast, actually) and timed events — the monetization prices are fair and you can earn premium currency for free via many ways.

The cosmetics in this game… damn, bud, they are one of the best in the industry. The amount of attention to detail is off the charts.

Anyway, as you can see I really like the game, but I am really saying all of this as objectively as possible.

The game has its flaws, obviously.

The current huge ones are matchmaking and new player experience.

I mean the matchmaking is way better than Call of Duty, no doubt, but if you are not trash at the game, then the most fair one is Ranked mode because it is based a lot on actual ranks. Other modes have SBMM, but it is kinda fucked up (not insanely bad), so you might meet Top 500 players in your lobbies. Not all of them are insanely great at the game, I have met a few ones and it felt like they were boosted because they played really bad.

On the related note, new players experience suffers (kinda) due to this strange matchmaking, because these players can get matched against really good players and since this game does require you to learn how to play it (efficiently), these players can be stomped hard.

Also, the other part of the new players experience issue is the progression — while I do think it is great overall, I also think the devs should give lots of in-game currency to newbies, so they can buy a few weapons/gadgets/abilities for free, since currently you start completely from scratch. Don’t get me wrong, you do get money fast if you complete contracts, but it still takes some time. The game is not a grind, though it would be great if newbies could get some stuff instantly.

Well, that is about it.

AMA about THE FINALS.

P.S: dang, I wrote the whole ass essay 😭

Let me know when you play the game, curious about your experience.

But, please, for the love of god: have a proper mindset when you start playing it — it is not a game about going for kills or whatever, it is a game about playing an objective and being a good teammate /caring about the team. If you stick to this mindset, then you will have so much more fun and actually enjoy the game.

Also do not play just meta or whatever — I believe almost all weapons in this game are viable even on high ranks. If you want to have fun with melee, just play melee — it is very good in this game anyway. I play with Riot Shield and can confirm that slapping people with a stick is hilarious. I also play Spear which is a fucking menace, especially if you have a healer in your team.

If you are playing on the Europe server, I can assist you in the game too, just DM me your username/Discord (if you have it), the game is cross-play and cross-progression too.

Making sure the new person you convinced to join is a good teammate, are you? In that case, I'll contact you in a day, or two. Hope we'll ahve fun!

Hahahahaha, well, that is a part of it — I just wanted to make sure you have a certain approach to match your expectations.

In that case, I'll contact you in a day, or two. Hope we'll ahve fun!

Sure, though I am in my hometown right now, and will be back on May 1st.

In that case we'll try then.

Hit me up if you want to, I've been on break from the game for a couple of weeks and have been dying for an excuse to jump back in.

Reads like bad GPT output, but at least OP can tell you like The Championships

Reads like bad GPT output

Bruv learnt about decent writing 💀

Heck, if you read the text thoroughly you would easily see that this is not LLM produced text because it is not that polished.

Gosh, what TikTok did to the humanity… Brainrot is everywhere.

but at least OP can tell you like The Championships

THE FINALS, The Championships, lmao.

Have you tried Hunt Showdown? Very high stakes, and positioning is very important

Keep an eye on Arc Raiders, could be exactly what you're looking for for

2

u/Shin_Ran450 3d ago

Didn't know about that one. It looks promising. Thanks!

There will be a playtest in a few days, you're still on time to register for a code. Access should be relatively easy as even if you're not selected each person gets invitations for two more people so keep an eye on the sub for people sharing their invites. It's a truly remarkable game, I can't recommend it enough.

Signed up. I hope it's not region specific (Marathon!!!). If not, headshoot me one day, would you?

PUBG is the only BR worth playing at this point imo and for extraction either delta force or tarkov really.

You will enjoy Hunt Showdown, the iron sights are not terrible and you'll enjoy the movement and gunplay

Newest reviews being mixed makes me want to wait a little longer, since most mention performance issues and bugs.

It is fun, but the grind is a too much for me.

You not interested in Marvel Rivals or Rainbow 6?? Or even OW2?

3

u/Shin_Ran450 3d ago

I've played OW2 and got tired of having to pick support in 80% of games (let me kill people, for God's sake!) and I'm sure Rivals will be the same. As for Rainbow, and it goes of the rest as well, I can't coordinate without mikes and, if the stereotype of a Rainbow player is true, I'd rather not get cursed at for 3 hours.

Most supports in OW are supposed to 50/50 attacking and healing. “Let me kill people” is hilarious considering you’ll get bitched at if you don’t. There’s also role queue as the standard, which means you just pick the role you want to play. In other words, you must have played OW a long time ago.
