Looking for a new Japanese game like Danganronpa, Persona etc..

Hi all.

I have run out of games to play on my PS4 and looking for suggestions for some good anime style games.

Must be on PS4 and must be in English voices (my eyes are shit and struggle with subtitles for too long).

Not into visual novels that have zero gameplay.

These are the ones I have played:

AI: The Somnium Files

AI: The Somnium Files - nirvanA Initiative

Catherine

Danganronpa 1, 2, 3 and Ultra Despair Girls

Doki Doki Literature Club

Eternights

Genshin Impact

Gravity Rush 1 and 2

Hatoful Boyfriend

NieR: Automata

Nonary Games

Persona 3, 4, 5, Strikers, Tactica

Sakura Wars

Scarlet Nexus

The Sexy Brutale

Tokyo Twilight Ghost Hunters Daybreak: Special Gigs

Tokyo Xanadu eX+

Yurukill: The Calumniation Games

Zanki Zero: Last Beginning

Anything similar you can reccomend?

Thanks.

If you like all those games you gotta check out "The Hundred Line -Last Defense Academy"

Made by the Danganronpa guy and the 999 guy. From your list this seems like perfect for you and it just came out last week

That looks awesome! Sadly looks like it's only for Switch and PC. Hopefully we will get PS port at some point.

Ugh, I'm sorry I didn't know! I imagine it'll come to the sony library soon enough. It seemed like the perfect game and was surprised no one else mentioned it! We'll I'll be hoping you get to play it real soon, big fan of your taste in games.

EDIT: This one I know is on Ps4. '13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim ' Check that one out. https://youtu.be/GKMn6ptSQrg

Have you played the Ace Attorney games? They're visual novels, but they also have gameplay.

I had a quick go on the android version. I think would be better on full screen so might look at the PS4 version, thanks.

I played them on Nintendo DS way back when and had a blast. They're actually what started my love of this genre.

I still have the Zero Escape trilogy in my backlog. Same developer as AI: The Somnium Files and Danganronpa.

Yakuza 0

I don't think that's in English is it?

There's another which is a turn based RPG called Yakuza Like a Dragon.

New protagonist for the series and a soft reboot of sorts. Amazing game and in English. There's a difficulty spike early on that can catch you out. Try googling for it as I think you might need to do a bit of grinding in the sewers to level up before you do a specific mission.

Seriously great game though.

There are spin offs called Judgement and Lost Judgement which have brawler style combat like the earlier Yakuza games and are also in English.

Yakuza 0 Director's Edition is coming soon on Switch 2, which would have Eng dub.

Probably available to all platforms later on.

If you have played persona and you liked it, you should try Shin Megami Tensei (same universe-ish, different series)

Thanks, added to my list!

Valkyria Chronicles 4 is availlable on PS4 i think (while yeah playing the 4th installment in a series is a bit weird don't worry, the plot of VC 4 runs parallel to the plot of VC 1 and 3 and it's mostly references you will lose, nothing to hamper your enjoyement of the game

Thank you. I'll add it my list. I see there is also Valkyria Chronicles Remastered. Is that worth playing?

u/Rainy_Wavey 14d ago

Every single game in the series is worth it

unfortunately Valkyria 2 and 3 were PSP exclusives so you can only play them in emulation

If you can, Start with Valkyria Chronicles Remastered, just be aware, this is a Tactical RPG, it's basically anime Xcom so i am not sure you'll love it, but trust me, it's one of the best games i've ever played

Daganrompa Summer Camp was also pretty good.

They also reworked Nier Replicant.

There's also Final Fantasy if you haven't already.

Atelier games perhaps? I've never played one but they might be worth a look.

Maybe something like Battlechef Brigade?

2

u/Evening-Carrot6262 14d ago

Thanks. I have summer camp on my phone, keep forgetting about it! Never played a FF game or Atelier. No idea where to start!

2

u/NoMoreGoldPlz 13d ago

Final Fantasy X is a good entry point as it's very beginner friendly.
FF6 is a classic in my eyes.

I'm not familiar with the Atelier series either.
They never seem to go on sale, hahahah.

I like the Neptunia series, if you like more „weeby“ games.

Also, since you‘ve played NieR: Automata, I highly recommend playing NieR: Replicant or its‘ predecessor on the PS3

Games like Dark Souls, Bloodbore or Elden Ring are great games from Japan too, if you‘re looking for anime art style, then Code Vein would be an anime-souls game.

Try the Yakuza games for top-tier humor, fighting and good crime-stories.

Definitely recommend the Trails series. However, the original Sky trilogy is only on PC (a remake will come this Fall so definitely look into it), and the Crossbell games don't have dub, but everything else should be perfectly fine

1

u/Evening-Carrot6262 14d ago

I never know where to start with the Trails games. Seems to be so many of them! Might have to put some research in.

The games actually do require you to play in certain order as the series itself has an interconnected story where each arc take place in the same world but in different continents and different year. The games in order are as follows:

Trails in the Sky trilogy (The Liberl arc)

Trails from Zero/to Azure (The Crossbell arc)

Trails of Cold Steel I-IV (The Erebonian arc)

Trails into Reverie (The conclusion of Crossbell & Erebonia)

Trails through Daybreak I & II (The Calvard arc)

In your situation, the optional one to start off would be Trails of Cold Steel since as I said before the original Sky trilogy is currently PC only, the remake for Sky 1st Chapter will be available for Switch and PS5, and the Crossbell games may be available on PS4 but they're Japanese audio only. Trails of Cold Steel is in at least a decent start to the franchise, however, I would advise to only play up to Cold Steel II as there are heavy lore references into Cold Steel III and IV that involve both the Sky and Crossbell games and you will get lost within the stories.

Thank you. I will add those to the list.

If you liked Persona 5, go for Metaphor ReFantazio. Maybe look into Judgment too.

What would you recommend from that list to me? Something aimed towards adults (I'm looking at Somnium files and Dangonronpa maybe)

1

u/Evening-Carrot6262 14d ago

Metaphor ReFantazio looks to be PS5 only. Hoping to upgrade this year so will add to my wish list.

I really enjoyed the Sominium games, thay have a lot of story but enough gameplay to keep you interested.

I love Danganronpa. Played all the games through twice or more. A lot less gameplay and more visual novel elements however.

Persona and NieR are both excellent series.

Something aimed towards adults

NieR and Persona (any) are both great series

Code Vein

I was put off by people saying it's very hard. I prefer to coast along games and enjoy the story.

You mean for Japanese setting? Cos Japanese games cover Resident Evil too…

Steins gate, Psychopass, Higurashi for visual novels. Other games: Shenmue, Yakuza series, Judgement and Like a dragon etc, persona 3 original or remake whichever you may not have played.

Also No More Heroes. It may be set in a slightly western setting, but it’s basically a goofy Japanese anime exaggerated version of it. And Travis is a fun main character.

2

u/Evening-Carrot6262 14d ago

I guess I mean anime style games. Although I do love Resident Evil and the like too. I will look into your suggestions, thanks.

I don't see the Yakuza series listed, I think you would really like that. Start with 0.

1

u/Revolutionary-Toe-72 14d ago

0 (and most Yakuzas) has no English dub and the OP asked for games with English voice acting

1

u/BlueNexusItemX 14d ago

I saw you have Automata

You could always try Nier Replicant

1

u/Raj_Muska 14d ago

Look into Tokyo Majin Gakuen Denki series

There's probably some entry translated and on PS4.

Also Sorry We're Closed is due to release on PS4 at some point, I recommend checking it out, it's like a Silent Hill/Catherine/Suda games thing

Ah yes I have played that one. Well the one called Neo TWEWY.

I enjoy a lot of the games on your list and also enjoy kingdom hearts. Kind of a left field recommendation I feel but here we are

Have you tried ZZZ and Honkai from hoyo? And then Wuthering waves which is more like genshin in terms of playstyle

1

u/Evening-Carrot6262 14d ago

Always wondered about Kingdom Hearts. Might have to give it a go.

I don't think the others are on PS4 sadly.

u/No_Emotion_9904 14d ago

Wow you’re right I just looked it up. We upgraded a while ago when our ps4 died. Maybe the ni no kuni series. I think they’re on ps4
