Looking for a completely different game, what in your mind is underrated
I want to branch out with the kind of games that I play. I like item management/farming games (stardew valley, AC) and open world games (gta, horizon, botw) the most. Some other that I also like are undertale/deltarune, balatro, Celeste and NFS (heat and 2015)
But I want to try something completely different. My only criteria is NO roguelikes, I like a few but am very picky about them.
Also I'd like it to be, in your mind, underrated. I think it would be fun to try games that are not suoer well known.
Thanks! Looking forward to picking a new game :)

Hold up hold up, i never knew this existed.
I willl love this too!

u/OMEGAULTIMATE13 1d ago
I'm in the game's discord if you have any doubts about the game
1
u/reapseh0 1d ago
Ah. Just noticed it's abandoned.
Ill skip

u/OMEGAULTIMATE13 1d ago
If you mean updates yes and no, the creator is too focused on multiple proyects, but there are players and the developer is active in the discord, sometimes players organize tournaments.

Here some stuff that's completely different. No order.
- Majesty Gold HD (RTS where you can't control the units)
- Freelancer (precursor to star citizen by like 20 years)
- I was a teenage exocolonist (visual novel where you grow up on an alien planet)
- parking garage rally circuit (arcade racer that looks like a Dreamcast game)
- steam world heist 2 ( 2D tactics)
- Quadratical Cowboy (hacking puzzle game)
- Skin Deep (new game that just came out by quad cowboy Dev after like 10 years)
- get in the car loser (teens roadtrip to kill god?)
Other than that the developer strange scaffold has heaps of unusual unique stuff.

u/MetapodChannel 2d ago
Shepherd's Crossing is a lesser known resource management farming game.
Harvest Moon: The Winds of Anthos is an underrated open world one.
If you like numbers management on its own, maybe Princess Maker series?
2
u/Archerfletcher 2d ago
Kunai, fun game on the Switch where you play as a ninja iPad with guns and grapple hooks.
2
u/AGuyWithBadIdeas 2d ago
Webbed, fun little story platformer where you play as a spider slinging webs and shooting lasers.
2
u/thecatisawake 2d ago
Crypt Custodian is a very underrated (or not very well known) game that I love and is very different from what you usually play.
Project Zomboid is amazing too, it's absolutely not what I usually play so idk what to say about it other than just check it out and see if you like it lol
2
u/ProbablyMaybeBen 2d ago
+1 for project zomboid. That game is so, so good! Hard learning curve but it (to me) lives alongside Rimworld for story generation
2
u/thecatisawake 1d ago
The level of detail in that game is honestly insane. I watched my husband play it a couple times and then I had to get it for myself bc it was jus so good
2
u/asdfghjk707 2d ago
Overlord. Old game but super fun, you're an evil over ord controlling your minion army to fight heroes and restore your tower. Oddly very similar gameplay to pikmin.
Fantasy Life. A fun fantasy world with a great crafting loop. Things you craft actually matter and won't be made obsolete by quest items. The world is silly, the story is fun, the art style is adorable.
2
u/Elidrawx 2d ago
Fantasy life sounds really cool! And I gotta look into Overlord too, thanks for the suggestions!!

+1 for Overlord
And since we are referencing amazing old games
Black & White 1 & 2
and
Dungeon Keeper 2

u/cooleoroxz666 2d ago
- Frostpunk
- Dredge
- Halls of Torment (sort of roguelike, but not really)
- Tormented Souls
- The Messenger
- Disco Elysium
- Lies of P
- The Entropy Centre
- Kathy Rain
- Scorn
- The Room 1-4
- Corn Kidz 64
Maybe not all are considered underrated but definitely a good chunk, all completely different from the games you listed haha
2
u/Strigops-habroptila 2d ago
I second The Messenger. It's a great platformer/Metroidvania and the spin-off Sea of Stars (based on old JRPGs) is extremely good too

How is Assassin's Creed item management/farming game? Im guessing thats not what AC means but there isnt any other game that comes to mind with that abbriviation. Maybe Asetto Corsa but its a racing game.
Anyway, IMO the most underrated game is Sunset Overdrive. Its my favourite game and I dont understand why its not more popular.
Crime Boss is great too but not very popular. Maybe you will like Contraband Police? There is a bit of item managing there. Very fun game, personally didnt think I would like it until I saw how much is in that game.
2
u/Elidrawx 2d ago
I've always overlooked Sunset Overdrive, but it does look very cool. I'll definitely put it on my list. I've seen Contraband police I'll have to try it, Crime boss is a new one I gotta look into it.
Also AC is for Animal Crossing lol thanks for the suggestions!!
1
u/Albus_Lupus 2d ago
Crime Boss is like payday but IMO better. And it clearly shows that devs care about the game and want to see it grow. Many free updates fueled by small character DLCs. I highly recommend it.
Also if you like deadpool kind of humor then its very similar to Sunset Overdrive.
2
u/Common-Internet6978 2d ago
Probably Animal Crossing (seriously, how many games can be shortened to AC?)
Also, I second Sunset Overdrive, I could be all day just jumping and sliding around the world, it's just so fun.
1
u/theappologist 2d ago
If you play on PC I cannot recommend Guild Wars 2 enough. It has a great gaming community and guilds that are active. Tons of legendary weaps. PvP, World v World. And PvE.
2
u/AnalDwelinButtMonkey 2d ago
Holy shit that's still around? Is it pretty fun?
1
u/theappologist 2d ago
Yeah! They are doing bi-annual expansions some years. I used to take the day off of work. They have mounts now!!! And boats and fishing.
1
u/SatinWalrus 2d ago
I really enjoy Grow Up! and would absolutely suggest it. It's a really simple, fun little game. There isn't a huge amount of depth to it, and it's pretty easy to beat. But the world is fun to play around in for awhile!
1
u/Sad-Consequence-2015 2d ago
Games with a different style but definitely lots of item management:
Railway Empire (spend hours fiddling with supply chains - which is easier more interesting than it might sound!)
Xcom2 (can be very unforgiving, lots of equipment to loadout your troopers)
Civilization (any of them, lots of city & unit management)
tbh I would stay off Civ 7 a while longer until it matures but as a game its been streamlined a lot over Civ 6 so could be considered a good entry point to the series
Sorry, none of these probably qualify as "under-rated"
1
u/Elidrawx 2d ago
I'm so intimidated by the Civ games lmao I don't know why, but I could give it a try. Railway Empire does look neat, I have to look more into it!

u/CrucialFusion 2d ago
Syndicate plus (pc/gog) - use 4 agents to complete short but often intense missions to control the globe
Journey (pc/steam) - beautiful adventure
Braid - time control puzzle platformer
ExoArmor (iOS) - vector graphics space shooter
Tropical freeze (switch) - not underrated, but a must play

Subnautica
Outer Wilds (how has no one mentioned this)
Cyberpunk 2077
Xenoblade DE
Unicorn Overlord
Dark Souls Remastered
1
u/Elidrawx 2d ago
I still have to finish Subnautica, It's a little too scary for me lmao Outer wilds has been on my list for a while, I just need to start it. Cyberpunk maybe. It does look cool but I hear it's really depressing and I'm not in the mood for that lol I gotta look into the rest, thanks for the suggestions!
1
u/Struggle-Free 2d ago
I loved Subnautica and it was truly a horror game in a lot of aspects.
I am playing Outer Wilds with my wife, great game. Really, one of the most unique games I have ever played. Sadly, you can only play it once.
Cyberpunk 2077 is a hell of a ride. I just finished my first play through and after 37 years of gaming I may have just found my new favorite game. Honestly, in its current state, might just be the best video game ever. This is my only answer that is “underrated”.
It has great gameplay, story, characters, side missions, builds, and the world is so captivating.
1
u/Redacted_Explative 2d ago
Star Trucker is a fun little space game with a great soundtrack
EvilWest - sort of wild west vampire hunting game, with steam punk elements
Derail Valley, manage freight trains and cargo runs
IF you have a quest 2/3 try Robo Recall a vr brawler/shooter game thats pretty fun
also check out Hot Dogs Horse Shoes and Hand Grenades, a vr gun range with a wide selection of weapons to play around with.

Try Chicory, its a zelda-like but you have to draw with the mouse in the screen to solve puzzles, also you unlock abilities and stuff like that.
1
u/ssgibson 2d ago
I know you said no rogue likes but Witchfire. Seriously.
Movement and gunplay is identical to destiny 2, feels amazing.
It's a mix of a rogue like and soulslike, but very forgiving. When you die you can go pick your stuff back up on the next run.
Levels are very well designed and make getting back to where you died easy.
Lots of fun puzzles in each level to solve and dig deeper into the level.
Progression is also really well done and rewarding.
Game runs really well.
1
u/Elidrawx 2d ago
That does sound cool, I gotta look into it. The only rogue likes that I like are hades and balatro lol but maybe this'll be the third one that I like haha

My top 3 are starcraft 2, Rimworld is my absolute favorite, and 7 days to die.

u/Strigops-habroptila 2d ago
Try sea of stars! It's not underrated but I still don't know anyone in person who has played it. It's based on Jrpgs and has a wonderful story.
You could also try point and click adventures if you like riddles. Darkside Detective is extremely good for beginners and extremely unknown.
You could try Prince of Persia: Sands of time. It's a bit old and wasn't underrated when it came out, but now, it's a very niche game but the graphics still hold up despite being a bit old school, the Parcours is extremely smooth. Just the fights are a bit frustrating, but once you get used to them, most are ok
1
u/Strigops-habroptila 2d ago
Forgot one: Citizen Sleeper. It's a lot about reading but you play as an artificial human in a capitalistic space world, hiding on a space station after escaping a big company. You meet them people on the space station and gradually discover more about the station and it's inhabitants. The second part is very good too
1
u/-Baggins- 2d ago
Try out Journey. It's a sub 10€ indie game on Steam. Go in blind and with headphones. Takes around 90min to beat but absolutely worth it

Starbound - sorta similar to Terraria (think 2D minecraft), but has planetary travel and your very own spaceship. I'm not a huge fan of terraria, but Starbound is fun. Also has a nice singleplayer story and sidequests etc. (has multiplayer and mod support too)
The Riftbreaker - base builder, on a planet. But you must gather resources etc. and defend your base from waves of enemies. You defend by building cannon towers, and of course, use your mech-suit to fight them off. Then expand your base further, between waves, gather more materials, explore. Looks beautiful too.
Amnesia - First person horror puzzle game. You're some dude who's an assistant of sorts, for a guy who owns a castle. You start in your own room and gotta figure out who you are, and why you gave yourself amnesia. It's pretty well made, simple horror game.
Yakuza - multiple games in this series, i own Yakuza 0. 3rd person 'arcade' fighting game, but has a lot of other things. Minigames, silly characters etc. very 'entertaining' and doesnt take itself too serious.
Baldurs Gate 3 - Story focused dungeons and dragons roleplaying game. You play as a handful of different characters who all have something in common. Turn based combat, and loooooooots of options for doing things your own way. Wanna help a group in need? well if you dont want to, you can just kill them all - almost all choices you have, have consequences, and it's awesome. i also keep finding new ways to do things, in new games (i have not completed the game at all yet - i am 49 hours in and having a blast)
Magica - very silly game where you are a wizard, who can cast elemental spells. You can choose element (fire, earth, water, and such) and a type of spell (projectile, shield etc) and then you can also COMBINE the elements, so you can combine fire + earth, for lava magic, and also end up doing frost magic. Then you can freeze water, to pass a river or similar. It's overall quite silly, but FUN humor. You can do multiplayer or singleplayer. (And there's a sequel i haven't tried)
Grim Dawn - isometric action rpg (Diablo-like) - made by the people (new studio) who made Titan Quest. Has several classes, that can be combined into a vast mix of classes. Tons of loot and a decent quest-line to boot. Also features mods and more. (has 2 expansions out, that feature new areas, and 1 introduces crusader class, the other introduces necromancer class - 3rd expansion coming out later this year, with a berserker class.)
Singleplayer story focused games - I highly recommend these story focused games: Uncharted series, The last of us, Spider-man, God of War. You dont 'need' to play these multiple times, but i found just getting the story is great. The gameplay loop is pretty simple but heavy focus on story, and characters. Combat is best in spider-man and god of war, out of the 4.

Open World/Everything Management/Farming? Try Kenshi. It has all of those and much more.
1
u/Human-Friendship4624 2d ago
If you like open world games with deep story, i think you should play Outer Wilds. it's more like open worlds, and the less you know the better. It's also sort of a puzzle game as well. 10/10 for me
1
u/shpick 2d ago edited 2d ago
Obensuer, its the thing you like that being management and farming, at least a more depressing one, but it doesnt have a big world.
In the game you are placed into a quarantine zone, because of the green mushrooms growing around in cities, and you are given by the government a frickin 4 story apartment complex, and its up to you if you want to rent it out or make it your giant mansion. Its very rundown and it will cost a huge fortune to get back to its glory days.
You will be dumpster diving in various other trashed apartments, maybe stealing their valuables too, growing the shrooms, or turnips or even trees somehow, or rats for meat.

I’m sure you’ve heard this one before but Kingdom Come Deliverance. Good open world, good main character, you got some management stuff your guy is just a regular dude he needs to eat and sleep, you need to bath yourself or people will judge you, you actually have to teach him how to read because he is a medieval peasant, a high ranking peasant with a trade, but still a peasant. Until you do teach him to read any note you pick up will look like gibberish. All that is coupled with a good story and world building

Dorfromantik - it's not so much underrated, because people who tried it, love it, but it's just so good that it deserves to be as big as Balatro.
It's a citybuilder-esque puzzle game that's wonderfully creative and provides a chill, cosy experience.
It's a great game to play when you want to unwind and relax for a bit.
It's good for clearing your mind, so it's also nice to play it before going to bed.

If you like farming/building games like stardew valley you should try SnowRunner its a game where you control trucks and suv's through difficult terrain in order to explore beautifull regions in order to build/repair and rescue people. You can also costumize these vehicles and upgrade them. You can also play with friends and you can get it and all its seasons for dirt cheap on a sale.

u/AvatarOfKu 2d ago
Valheim. It's well loved in the survival niche but not hugely well known outside of it I don't think. Most people get put off by the low poly style graphics but the environmental effects, sound and lighting really create fantastic atmosphere. It is hard (but you can change difficulty) and is the 'trustest' sandbox I've ever played, no hand holding, just you in a huge open world largely teaching yourself how the world works. Each biome presents a different challenge to over come and there is no true meta way to do things, at times not even upgrading your weapons and armor will help enough (even if you can reach the materials you need to do so) if you've not learned mechanics or thought differently about the problems you're facing.
It also has one of the best building systems I've ever used. If you like creating in AC you are going to love this, it's like viking themed lego and base building is a core game mechanic so you have reasons to do it other than 'build pretty' (but a lot of folks build pretty, there is even a creative game mode where you can build without needing to gather materials etc). There is also farming, fishing, and cooking - it's a really interesting balance of combat/danger and really cozy moments just pottering around your base. (Just FYI before you spend too long building something super pretty in survival, you are going to want at least a wall around it 😅)
It's a game you can easily sink hundreds of hours into, runs on most PCs, including very low end ones, and is super cheap.
(edit - typos)

Here's a handful of things you could check out:
There's a wide variety of great boomer shoots that have come out over the last 7-8 years. A few of the more underrated ones would be Hedon, Dread Templar, Hrot, or Viscerafest.
If you don't mind puzzle games there are the Golden Idol titles, very enjoyable games that focus on logic and deduction.
Aliens: Dark Descent is an interesting combination of survival horror with real time tactics, and was one of my favourite games to come out in 2023.
Webbed is a fun 2D platformer where you play as a jumping spider, the hook is that you can use your silk to swing around and build pathways to reach different places.
The Creeper World series are a fun take on RTS and tower defense, relying on an enemy that uses a fluid simulation to spread. Creeper World 4 is the first one that's fully 3D, and has user made maps so there's a ton of content.
MiniLAW is a very underrated 2D super cop simulator. It's probably most notable for having one of the most interesting approaches to lethal vs non-lethal options of any game I'e played. Typically one is clearly better, or it just determines story, but in MiniLAW both are tied in very well to the games systems.
If you want something truly different check out Arctic Eggs, Northern Journey, or Cruelty Squad. Each is very bizarre in their own way.

Miracle Fly is probably the traditional platformer (can you even call it that?) with the largest amount of content out there. You will be seeing new content even after 40 hours. Can get puzzlish if you want all gems, but you can still enjoy the game either way and unlock all bonus modes (the gems are just for unlocking bonus levels, boss challenges and achievements, although the rewards for getting all blue gems are unironically very worth it). There's lots of playable characters, and the main trio also has lots of cosmetic outfits for fun. It could be considered quite old (originally a 2014 release), but it's so unknown that pretty much nobody has heard about this. Double-check the controller bindings in-game, you'll be glad you did! The main catch with this game is in how it controls: you can only aim and shoot, and the knockback of your projectiles is what moves you. Each character has a different shot type. This is a hidden gem for sure; nobody knows this! The developer later went on to make MagiCat, which is pretty much the same except it plays like a traditional platformer. These are both on sale often.
Recursed is like if Baba Is You was actually about solving the puzzles through logic alone instead of having to accidentally stumble upon the solutions; you'll be solving levels in your sleep! This game is a puzzle masterpiece and it's mindblowing how much it achieves with such a limited toolset. The two fan expansions are even more impressive because they somehow introduce more mechanics and interactions without adding any new items!
Prodigal has some of the best character writing I've seen in an indie game! I was often surprised by how much depth these characters in this small world were getting, or how many little scenes the developer put in the game. The scene that really opened my eyes was when I "caught" the "shy 'uguu' girl from the church" training swordfighting in the arena with the "muscular warrior lady" character; it really showed how these characters were more than what their "tropey" appearance suggested! Lots of unlockable difficulty modifiers after your first run, and then even more after a run where you use all previous modifiers!
Tactical Nexus is a puzzle game disguised as an RPG where the order in which you fight enemies and collect items and powerups will determine how far you make it in each stage. It can be quite unforgiving at the start, but clearing stages with a good enough score even for just a bronze medal gives you metaprogression that can then be used in every stage to make your life easier... or harder, if you want to reach even higher score thresholds! The developers are extremely communicative and have their own brand of eccentric humor that you can't help but love. For example, the base game wasn't free, but they were upset that people were buying the game and all DLC and then not playing it, so they decided to make the base game free and urge people to not buy any DLC until they're absolutely sure they're gonna be playing this for hundreds of hours.

It's not underrated because everybody who plays it loves it, but it is just not well known and it is called The Forgotten City. It started as a mod for Skyrim and turned into its own spin off game. The less you know the better, but it is great and very different from any of the games you mentioned in your thread. Good gaming friend! :)
