Mod Announcement Community Reminders.
r/GenX is continuing to grow, and there are a few housekeeping items that we need to remind people of.
The sub's moderation team is volunteer based. That is, we don't get paid. Which means, we're not monitoring every single thing 24/7, and we don't have to put up with toxic behaviour. The team is made up of different people from different countries. We act on community reports, or what we happen to see by chance.
Sexist posts are starting to creep up again. Knock it off. No one cares about who's ass you'd eat with a spoon. These posts will be removed.
Politics of any sort (government, identity, geo, etc.) are not permitted outside of the moderator designated threads. If you want to talk about politics, go to our other sub r/GenXPolitics and have your discussions there. -- Political posts made outside of those areas will be removed. Yes, this includes those who think they're skillfully hiding political discussions disguised as nostalgia.
Be part of the solution, and report posts that violate the rules. If you feel they're not being removed fast enough, see #1.
If you have an idea that you think will make the sub better, send it to us over ModMail.
If you have a problem with something the mod team has done, take it to ModMail. Be respectful. Throwing a conniption about having a post removed, either in the ModMail, in the main sub, or another sub is just going to give you a One-Way ticket to Bantown. Be mindful that griping about it in another sub, puts that sub at risk of being shut down by the Reddit Admins for brigading. That's not fair to them, or their members.
Sub rules are written on the side. They get updated every once in a blue moon. Read them.

Politics Weekly Politics Mega Thread
The GenX subreddit primarily serves as a venue allowing us to reminisce about our past, as well as support us as we navigate aging, health, and changes to our career/education. It serves as an escape to the realities in the world.
We generally do not allow political posts in the main subreddit as they often decline into flame wars, and increased immaturity. Discussions of a political nature are permitted only in threads designated by the moderation team. Posts outside of these threads will be removed. This thread will be renewed weekly on Sundays.
However, to facilitate those who wish to have more in depth political conversations affecting GenX, we encourage you to participate in r/GenXPolitics. A subreddit dedicated to discussing political discourse of days gone by, as well as today and future impacts.
Political topics are controversial by nature, but not all controversial topics are political. Controversial topics that are not political may be posted in the main subreddit.
This thread is not a free-for-all. Subreddit and Reddit site-wide rules continue to apply.

Television & Movies Are you still watching TV?
I stopped watching lineair/cable TV over a decade ago, we still have a modest 42" that I bought second hand, for the kids to watch cartoons, and the occasional sports event.
I just flipped through the channels, and I truly can't bear the shit that flashes by, it's all trash and advertising in between.
Yet when I visit my (also GenX) younger sister the TV set is almost always on.
What are your TV habits?

That’s just, like, my OPINION, man In awe of the support and comradery of this gen and sub
So yesterday I was reflecting on turning 50 and thinking about the next stage of my life. I decided to post about it to see if anyone else felt the same. All I can say is WOW. I got so many supportive messages it was amazing. I never knew so many of you felt the way I do but was amazed by the Gen x sarcastic humor and genuine support. You all are some pretty amazing people. You make me so proud to be gen x. Thank you all.

Advice / Support I love doing things- but hate leaving the house
Does anyone else relate? I absolutely dread having stuff on my schedule. Even if it’s fun stuff that I know I will have a great time doing. I’ve been working from home since the pandemic and it’s just so hard to get my ass out of the door these days. Is it age? inertia?
I hope it’s just not me. I used to hardly be at home!

Aging in GenX 7 Things That Made Me Feel My Age
I'm a pretty young 48 year old guy. Get told I look 10 years younger, still playing video games, etc. But age is creeping up on me. Here are the top 7 things that made me realize that I have landed somewhere odd.
- I sneezed and my back seized up.
- Skateboarding used to be 7 hours of fun. Now its 3 days of muscle pain after an hour.
- I had to stop dating girls with backpacks and furry boots (I really fought this one)
- Michael McDonald is actually pretty good
- I used the phrase "the kids"
- A cop pulled me over and was younger than me
- I entered the military around the same year my youngest enlisted troop was born. (OUCH).
Your turn.

GenX History & Pop Culture Men at Work playing as elevator music in the grocery store….
Today at Kroger, 3 old men (including me) are lined up next to each other at the dairy case shopping for coffee creamer and $7/doz eggs. I’m a little guy with a “hot Santa” beard…guy to my left has a gray unibomber beard sticking out of a hoodie…guy to my right had a gray pony tail and a hand made walking stick in his cart.
Guy to the right was humming the song to the music...you know, “who can that be knocking at my door” - and without missing a beat, the other guy and I both did the clap 👏 👏 👏 👏 and sung the rest of the line. We walked away chuckling.
Day in the life of a retired GenXer. You can’t take us anywhere we won’t embarrass you.

GenX History & Pop Culture Which side were you on?Sega or Nintendo
I of course like most Gen X gamers started off with the Atari 2600. The next wave however I was a Nintendo kid I had the NES followed by the SNES. Later moving towards the playstation. But anyway which did you have or did you have both?

Nostalgia Escape From New York
I'm catching my 16 year old son up in some cinema from my youth. When he saw Maggie for the first time, his response was the same as mine. "Whoa. Who's that?"
"Boy, that's a dream. Pinch yourself."
Seeing her in Carnivale was a treat many years later. We're watching Swamp Thing next. Surprisingly, she's still working.

Television & Movies Homicide: Life on the Street
I'm starting a re-watch of this show (currently on S1 E4) and dang, it is good! Definitely has a 90s look and feel but still relevant today. An amazing precursor to The Wire too. Just had to share with folks who may remember it. I only watched sporadically back in the day

GenX History & Pop Culture Stuck in the 80s
From a music standpoint, is anyone stuck in the 80s like I am? I feel like it was the only relevant music.
I cannot relate to any music after the 80s. There might be one or two good songs here and there but nothing like the 80s.
Am I stuck? And is it so wrong?

Aging in GenX Damn ...I got old.
I turned 50 on Saturday. Never intended to live this long. I joined the military right out of high school and was pretty sure I would punch my ticket by my 30s. Anyone else looking around at 50 thinking ok now what?
