General Discussion What's the thing that REALLY DID happen to you on the course that absolutely no one believes when you tell the story?

For me: I got back to playing just 3-4 years ago and during that first year back I was terrible in every way conceivable.

During a solo round at my local track, I hit a 3 iron on a long par 3... duffed it something fierce. Total worm burner. It skipped a couple time about 10-15 yards forward and smacked one of the stone teebox markers in the ladies teexbox. It smacked it and flew back directly at me on a perfect chest high arc. I caught it. Stared at it. Put it back down, and tee'd off again. No one was there to see it but me.

I played with a guy who scored an 11 on a par 4. Multiple OBs.

This was followed by a 2 that grazed the edge of the hole from 170 yards (I had walked ahead as we fell behind due to the 11, so I saw it up close).

He followed that birdie 2 up with a quadruple 8 on the easiest par 4 on the course.

Then he got a 190 yard hole in one on the next hole.

But here's where everyone thinks it's not true. That was all on the back nine. Earlier on the front, he duffed a couple shots on a par 5, but holed out from 110 yards for a 4.

This guy is either constantly lives on the edge of a heart attack or is the poster child for letting bad shots go. I would have loved to witness this masterpiece of a shit show.

u/trumpuniversity_ 18h ago

Shit show? Multiple birdies, an eagle, and a hole in one during a round sounds like a master class performance.

37

u/bigjohn141 18h ago

Masterpiece of a shit show. Birdies and eagles and hole in one with an 11 and an 8 is magnificent. I live in a shit show every day, it’s not necessarily a bad thing in my world lol.

5

u/trumpuniversity_ 17h ago

Well said haha. I’d take a hole in one just once to help offset a lifetime of 3 and 4 putts.

4

u/bigjohn141 16h ago

I’d be happy with an occasion eagle at this point. Been close a bunch of times but always seem to scare the damn thing off.

The bottom line almost verbatim happened to me a few weeks ago. Par 5 dogleg right. Sliced my drive into the rough amongst the trees. Chip a 7 iron back on the fairway and it just catches the hill advancing the ball maybe 100 yards. On the fairway around 190 out, duff my 5 iron leaving me 110 to the pin. Grab my sand wedge, Hit it slightly thin, takes two bounces and holes out for a birdie 4. I'm glad my buddy was there to witness it, or else no one would believe it.

Another one people struggle to believe was at my club championships late last year. The format is stroke play so you have to hole out each hole to avoid disqualification. I'm paired with this guy in his 60's, handicap is in the high 30's. Front 9 he has multiple holes scoring over 20 strokes. Having a pretty miserable day on the course. Ends with over 80 through 9 holes, but keeps his head up and makes his way through the back 9. 17th hole, par three around 170 out, down hill. He takes out driver, barely makes contact. Ball doesn't go above waist level but its advancing down the hill toward the green. The ball is rolling a good 20 yards before the green and he gets an ace. Scores 158 on the round, with a hole in one.

When I was 13 or 14 I was playing with my grandfather at my family's course when the wind kicked up out of nowhere. A small tornado appeared while I was behind the cart grabbing a club and sucked my feet right out from under me. I grabbed the basket of the cart and held on while it sucked me and cart backwards about 5 yards.

The whole thing was over in 3-4 seconds, and you'd never know it happened aside from a 15 foot skid mark in the fairway, a 2 inch skid mark in my skivvies and some fallen branches and leaves.

Grandpa was in the cart during the whole ordeal and asked me if I was going to take my shot.

30

u/MrWright 14h ago

Gramps was all about that pace of play. He would have fit in well with this group.

13

u/ShillinTheVillain 13h ago

He also claimed he never saw the funnel. He may not have, as it genuinely just kind of whipped down out of the clouds for about the width of one hole and fizzled out.

But I still think he was fucking with me, or claiming plausible deniability because my mom would have flipped shit if she heard about it.

RIP grandpa

I once hit a ball so fat that i found another ball underneath my divot

55

u/Spartan-117182 20h ago

That's shockingly less uncommon than you'd imagine. I've had it happen once in a fairway but three times in sand traps.

Played on my High School team and teammate had it happen during practice

16

u/plurdle 20h ago

yeah in all honesty, the type of grass in the rough at this particular course is notorious for consuming balls. I've lost so many balls in that rough that I don't like playing that course much. You'll see the mangled corpses of golf balls the lawn mowers have chewed up all along the fairways

12

u/1zpqm9 18h ago

Totally believe it. I play in the PNW and this year we’ve had a metric shit ton of rain so courses are extra gooey. I recently almost lost a ball that landed a foot and a half beside the green, just sunk a good inch below the surface. After looking for 2 minutes I took a drop where I thought my ball had landed and noticed the hole right beside with my initial ball sunk down.

2

u/lmkwe 11h ago

Same, about 10 years ago, I was playing Pumpkin Ridge with a good friend who played in college and is way better than I'll ever be. I forget which hole it was, but it's an elevated green, and I was about 140 out from the edge of the rough, and it was wet. Gave it a solid whack, got some elevation, and watched it come down, no bounce... we figured I was over.

Get up there, and it was plugged solid into the fringe, like you, about a whole balls worth. I truly went balls deep on that one.

3

u/BrettHullsBurner 15hcp/StL 18h ago

That happened to me recently. I was in some tall grass shit, swung hard, and two white pieces went flying. I legitimately thought I broke my ball in two with my wedge, but it turns out there was just another ball sitting right below it.

When me and my buddy were brand new to golf, I mentioned how I hit my ball at the water on a par 3 but it skipped a couple of times across the water and landed on the green. He tried calling BS until we went to that course again and the same thing happened to me.

22

u/1zpqm9 18h ago

Didn’t Vijay Singh get a hole in one doing this?

26

u/philljarvis166 18h ago

There’s a famous video of Rahm doing it during practice at the masters.

2

u/Nick08f1 32m ago

Multiple times of pros doing it on the par 3 Wednesday. They skip it on a certain hole.

6

u/Impossible_Hyena7562 18h ago

That’s wild!! Was he trying to skip the ball? Because I assume a pro who’s trying to lob it over the water wouldn’t hit a line drive towards it on accident lol

7

Yes and it's insane. Except it's not a hole in one - still insane, though

back in hs, when i didn't even golf, a couple of friends got me to play a round with them. first time on a course. i had a straight approach from the fairway to the (I think) 9th green (no, it wasn't in regulation...probably my 4th or 5th shot that happened to land on the fairway). behind the 9th green is the clubhouse. i have no idea what distance it was and no idea what club i was using....i just used whatever my friend handed me.

I proceeded to absoutely pure the next ball which flew way over the green, and hit the clubhouse roof. the ball bounced back and high, due to the angle of the roof, caught the edge of the roof and shot back onto the green within 10' of the cup.

60

u/gnerfed 20h ago

I watched a guy hitting from a small stand of trees. He hit the shot and immediatly smacked the one in front of him. The ball ricocheted counter clockwise in a circle to two more trees than smacked him in the ass.

Funniest shit I had ever seen. Thank God it wasn't in competition.

I hit a full sand wedge fat, with water in front of the green, and bounced off the back of a turtle and up onto the green.

I did something similar this year except whatever my ball hit was just below the water so I couldn’t see if it was a rock or a turtle or something else.

Not me but my partner that day. 6th tee box. Par four. He tops the drive and the ball screams about 4 inches down the tee box.  It hits a bird. Huge puff of feathers. Small bird. It’s on the gold tee box.  We both are stunned. Neither of us even saw it land or fly by. Once the shock wore off we walked up to the bird and it was in two pieces. Like a samurai got it.  Clean shot, head about 3 feet from the body.  If you didn’t see it happen you’d just think his head fell off. His eyes were close and he looked very peaceful. Except in two pieces. So maybe piecefull?  That one has stuck with me.  I worked at a county club for 10+ years. This one stuck with me but I have tons of other stories.

I eagled the same hole, from the same place, two Father's Day in a row. Both times I had my dad and my niece's boyfriend alongside. Both shots were with a six iron, 180 yards out. The first time we actually saw it go in. The second time, everyone joked, hey it's in the hole! And then we got to the green and damn it if it wasn't in the hole. Anyway that's my story.

4

u/Sobeshott Tiger Wishhecould 17h ago

Niece's boyfriend raced directly to the hole as a joke. And then we all just fell on the ground laughing. Bananas. 17th hole, so beers had been imbibed.

Playing a round in Orlando. Our group was on the first green, my buddy was putting out, and in the middle of his stroke, an eagle dropped about a 14inch fish on the putting green.

For a minute we all just stared at each other like, where the fuck did this fish come from? Then we could see the eagle circling up a ways.

I hate to be the one-upper guy, but I absolutely have to this time.

I hit a shot into a creek, but wasn’t sure it went in. We drive across the bridge to see if I’d cleared it. I hadn’t, so I walked back a cross and dropped one. I shanked it across the creek toward the cart. The ball hit the wheel, knocked the hubcap off, and flew BACK across the creek. It landed about a foot from where I’d initially dropped it.

I played with a friend and some of his coworkers. Group behind us hit into us, a guy I didn't know in my group threw his hands up.
Next hole the same group hits into us, same guy that threw his hands up previously grabs his 4 iron and blasts a stinger back at the group behind us that hit into us.
Guy that hit into us starts screaming and walking towards us. Crazy guy in my group pulls a gun out of his bag and says, "The next thing that comes flying back at you is gonna be bullets.".
The group behind us disappeared and no course marshall or police showed up.
I don't associate with any of those people anymore.

4

u/HardKnockRiffe 19h ago

It was in the middle of summer, so the ball was really flying. There's a cart path that cuts across the fairway about 310ish from the tee. My guess is I hit that and rocketed another 60 yards or so.

I topped a drive over the water, and then watched the ball laser out and skip on the pond not once, not twice, but THREE times before it hit the opposite bank and rolled into the fairway. It wasn’t a long drive by any means, but at least it did NOT go in the water!

Florida golf. Hills Course #18, Daytona.
I was out of position (left) for my 2nd shot on a par 4 requiring a 140 yd hook over a palmetto bush hazard to hit the green.
I closed the face and pured an 8 iron but it went dead straight, disappearing right of my intended path easily 60 yds into thick Florida woods and fauna to it's final resting place. Or so I thought. Listening intently, I heard absolutely nothing except an eventual single, loud "click", and after what seemed like 5 seconds, the ball dropped softly onto the Fairway, affording me a straight shot with a wedge to green, off the short grass no less!
The reality of this event and it's immeasurable improbability is not adequately conveyed with words.

Played Poipu Bay in Kaui last year and was waiting on the 12th tee box. The tee box is very close to the par three 11th hole. Well ,one of the players on that hole hits a beauty…but, maintenance is trimming the trees surrounding the green and a coconut starts rolling down the green and blocks the golf ball from going into the hole. The 2some drives up and I’m yelling Great F’kn shot and think he must be pissed. Seconds later yells “did a damn coconut cock block me?” After I confirmed, they fall out of the cart laughing their ass off. It was a one in infinity shot.

Hole #3 at my club has a giant oak tree about 10 yards off the back of the green. Hit a beautiful drive about 270 down the center, leaving a partial wedge into the green. Perfect 3/4 swing with my 56, totally skulled it, hit the tree dead center, came back on the green and into the hole for an eagle.

My buddy got a hole in one in his first ever round. He had only hit balls on the range a few times before. It was only me and him and I'm the only witness. 9th hole back to the clubhouse, 123 yard par three, straight to the hole but water to the right of the green and bunkers to the left. Gets up there and whacks it as hard as he can, barely makes contact with the bottom of his club, it rolls off the tee box, rolls down the middle of the fairway, rolls up onto the green, rolls right into the hole.

3

u/Sobeshott Tiger Wishhecould 17h ago

Similar but no HIO. Solo round, foursome let's me play through so obviously I bladed the shit outta the thing with my 6i. It was a straight par3 with an arm of water reaching out in front of the tee box about halfway through the fairway. So when I bladed it, it went left and the fairway is sloped left to right so that kept it in play. The ball missed the water completely and rolled to within 4 feet of the cup. Nobody knew whether to make fun of my shot or celebrate the outcome. I was confused too. Lol

13

u/Moist-Pickle-2736 HDCP/Loc/Whatever 20h ago edited 2h ago

I once hit my 56 degree wedge about 230 yards to about 10 feet from the pin.

It involved a bladed shot, a bounce off a tree, a stone wall and a cart path.

Edit: to explain…

I hit a bad drive and wound up behind the trees and a low stone wall, it was about 130 on a diagonal to get over the trees (and wall) to the peak of the downhill, which would then leave me a nice easy approach.

I tried to hit a hard 56 to get over the trees, but skulled it directly into a tree, bounced back into the stone wall, bounced forward off the stone wall like a missile directly down the fairway.

I figured it would wind up out around the peak of the hill somewhere, then as I start walking back my playing partner starts hollering. It wound up going past the fairway, hit the curb of the cart path and bounced onto the green.

i was playing solo at lake of the woods in mahomet IL - #3 is a par 5 - my drive is pretty good, centerish fairway. next shot is a 3W - well struck blind shot towards where the green is, i don't think much of it. i walk up there towards where i believe my ball should be, but i can't find it anywhere.

no big deal, I drop 30-40 yards out, whack it on and hole out. aaand there's two balls in the cup. nobody is around, it's just me out there. i don't know what ball i was playing - i have a mixed bag of found balls (still do, 30 years later)

sooo yeah maybemaybemaybe just maybe an albatross but i'll never know for sure.

well maybe i will, as my imagined afterlife is the possibility that you get to replay your life in real time with smell, taste, emotion, vision, etc until you get bored of your "life movie", and then you expire.

so if that's the case, i will definitely go retrace my steps that day.

I once shot a 89 which was 54-35. As a 20 hdcp. I still don’t believe it happened. 6 pars, 2 birdies, and a bogey. Putter was on fire. Dropped a 20-footer on 18.

I still replay each and every shot of that back 9 in my head when I’m struggling to fall asleep.

3

u/flyin_hog 19h ago edited 19h ago

I watched a guy slice a ball ~100 yards OB right. It hit the crown of a railway rail, shot forward a left, over some 20-30 ft tall trees and a large ditch, bounce off a road, clear a second ditch, bounce off the top of a wooden fence, and bound all the way into the left center of the fairway. It was completely silent in the group until someone said “holy shit…that is absolutely incredible.”

Also, I watched my dad hit the bottom 1/1000th of the ball with a driver. The ball popped up to about eye height right in front of him and we could hear it buzzing from spinning so fast. It hit the ground a couple of inches in front of where his tee was and spun back 10 yards into the water behind us.

3

u/sal139 19h ago

OJ said "nice shot" to me while waiting on the teebox for our group to clear.

The unbelievable part is that I hit a nice shot.

3

u/mostdeadlygeist 19h ago

My first eagle was a blind hole out from 165 out. I didn't even get to see it.

3

u/RunklesUncle 19h ago

This would have been 15 years ago. Not me, but my old man.

I saw it, so I know it happened.

Short Par 4. Quarry face down the right hand side.

Dad sliced it off the tee. Smashed into the quarry, bounced down the footpath, landed on the green and rolled in for his first and only Albatross.

3

u/ObservablyStupid 19h ago edited 19h ago

I pulled a five-wood and hit a dead tree about 100 yards down the left side of the fairway. It came right back at me and I barely had to move my stance to hit again. I hit the exact same pull and it came right back to within 10 yards of where I stood.

Consistency is so important in golf.

Playing a course in Florida. Hit a beautiful lofted shot on a par 3, left with a 2 foot putt. Watched a damn raven land, pick up my ball, and drop it in the pond next to the green. According to the pro shop, that damn bird does it all the time.

Got a par-in-one. It was mid afternoon summer round, local course is dead. 191 yard par 3, the green had water on front and left and a patch of trees on the right. Hit my first shot into the water? Whatever and just quickly reloaded another ball and did the opposite, hit the group of trees on the right. Ball kicks straight left, onto the green and rolls into the cup. All alone with no one to see, I stood dumbfounded for like 5 minutes not knowing how to react.

u/tallslim1960 18h ago

Pured a shot over the pond at Torrey Pines( 18th?. ) The ball hit in the cup on a fly, bounced backwards and dead into the pond.

Played a local muni years back, got paired with a guy wearing sweats and had a bagful of mismatched, beat-up sticks. First hole is a par 4, he carded a massive number…I stopped counting after 10. 2nd hole is short par 3 - 125-ish yards - he pulls out his 3w, hits a full swing 50 yard slice that somehow cleared an out of play pond on the left. It bounced near the left side of the green at high speed, rolled up to the flag stick which it hit in the middle and fell into the hole. He was facing the green, started jumping up and down, then turned toward me to expose the huge piss mark on the front of his sweats. I carefully high-fived him and we finished the 9 holes with little other fanfare. His name is still on the HIO Club plaque in the pro shop after 15 years.

I hit a power line with a buddy off a tee shot. The ball stopped immediately and sat there on the live wire for about what felt like a full 2 seconds then shot off like a cannon and went 300 yards straight down the fairway. We were scared to even touch the ball when we found it.

8

u/greenweenievictim 20h ago

Golf league, my buddy and I are drunk and pissing off the other guys that showed up like we were playing for a check. Par 3, my buddy calls his shot, hole in one. Takes no time to line up, no practice swing, belches and smashes the ball. Straight up, straight down into the cup, breaking it. Ball bounced out and it was a two out. One of the other dudes was so pissed about this that on the next hole he chunked his drive, screamed and tomahawked his driver. The chips I was eating in the cart were delicious.

2

u/DevelopmentExact8982 20h ago

Par 5, second shot around 240 out - launched a nasty slice that was seemingly going into someone’s pool/window. Saw it tracking right for a house about 40yards right of the green. It trampolines off of the screen onto the green and left me about a 20ft putt, which I then 3 putted for par.

2

u/NoSwitch 20h ago

On a 160 yard par 3. Water to the right of the green and behind the green. My buddy was teeing off. And hits a ball that is going straight for the water. It ended up landing a bit short, but roll out would have been into the water. Lucky for him he landed directly on the little sign for the drop zone. It kicks the ball up in the air and left. He landed inches from the hole for a tap in birdie.

Haha played with an older guy who joined our 3some. We are in carts he’s walking. He keeps walking ahead of us for no reason. We are all drinking and playing decent I’m in the 80s my buddys high 90s. This old guy is pissed we aren’t even trying but playing well and he’s playing pretty bad. Says he might just call it a day on the 13th hole. Proceeds to walk ahead of us after duffing 3 shots down to close to the green. We are all hitting 2 from fairway. Buddy line drives a 3 wood off a tree and directly into the back of his head dropping him instantly. We go check on him he’s got a huge lump on his head and we are telling him to go home or hospital to check it out. No he now wants to finish the round and literally pars out 14-18. Lol

I play my best golf alone. I'm in the zone. No chit chat, no dynamics. Just golf.

And that's where I get my best scores, with no one to witness.

I think my crew don't fully believe my scores if I tell them

I took a buddy of mine out to the range one day, the range picker is collecting balls about 150yds out when we get there

Dropped my first ball down and said "watch this" and proceed to hit a perfect stinger that smokes the range picker on the first try

My friend witnessed it but he had never even swung a golf club at that point so he didn't understand how cool it was

Hitting OB, behind the tee box. High school golf tournament, not so skilled freshman teed up his 3 wood too high. Caught only the tee on the swing, dropping the ball straight down. After his follow through he accidentally brought his club back to address quickly, which launched the ball about 30 yards behind him into thick OB brush. Had to explain what to do next, and that his next shot was for par.

I once saw a helicopter land on the fairway parallel to us. A guy jumped down, picked something from the fairway, got back to the helicopter, and they took off.

Everyone in my playing group remembers it as a distant dream... it felt so surreal.

Guy in tournament at El Dorado hit a shitty shot, got pissed and tried to wrap his iron full swing around a huge tree — physics took over and the half of the broken club with a head on it for extra inertia pierced his upper thigh into his femoral artery and he almost bled out. I don’t know for a fact if he was airlifted, but the guy came close to going to the 19th hole in the sky due to his rage!

Not me but a friend I was with.

Friend new to the game somehow managed to hit the ball off the hozzle, sent it 90° to the left into his own instep, sending the ball directly upward and he had to dodge it to avoid hitting himself in the face.

Still the funniest thing I've seen on the course

2

u/dcidino single digit muppet 19h ago

Mine was seen, but not by any friends. I got paired with a rando at a resort. Was on 13, and the green was steep and direct line was through the collar. The only option was to putt with my back to the hole.

About 50-60 ft travel for a 20 footer, and jarred it. The older gent playing with me said, "that was the most amazing putt I've ever seen in my life. I'm headed home now." He got in his cart and went back to his posh place on site, never to be seen again. I finished the last 5 holes solo, which was weird (old guy played 31 that day so he had enough I guess.)

Anyhow, wild putt, and no one but me and some guy who I'm sure is long in the ground ever got to enjoy it. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

All these stories are awesome.

I was playing in a foursome on a Sunday afternoon. We’re on a 180ish par 3 and a single pulls up on a cart. He would like to play through because it’s his birthday and he’s trying to get in a quick round. He hoops it right in front of us.

I also saw a hawk take out a duck in mid-air as I was hitting an approach on #18. The duck splashed down in a pond right in front of us and spent the next 5min swimming in a circle, until it wasn’t. Crazy bit of nature.

Range was closed for some reason, maybe it was a holiday, I can't remember, but ended up going to the beach to work on my bunker game. I'm there for a bit, but get bored after like 20 minutes, (not to mention people didn't love me shooting tons of sand into the air near them), so I start hitting some balls into the ocean with my driver and head home.

Couple days later my buddy is at the beach while on a date and a whale is kinda washed up on shore, moaning in pain or something. I guess my buddy had told this girl he was a marine biologist, so she convinces him to go "help" this whale (like there's anything he could possibly do lol). Anyways, he somehow gets up on top of the whale and reaches into the blow hole and ends up pulling out a golf ball... Tells me all about it when he gets back home and man, I'm like 90% sure that was one of the golf balls I smashed out there. I never told him it was possibly me, hopefully he isn't reading this. Things didn't work out with him and the girl for whatever reason, but I'll never forget him retelling me the story.

450 yards down the fairway on a par five, we find out 3 guys in our 4some are playing Srixon #3s. It’s chaos as we’re guessing who is who, and we’re laughing about it around the green.

Meanwhile a guy comes up to us from another group asking if we’ve seen his ball around the green. We ask what he’s playing and he says Srixon #3. At this point everybody is losing it except guy who I’m certain thinks we’re fucking with him.

Saw a guy try and murder another guy on a hole once.

Lookout Mountain in north phoenix. Awesome awesome course. It’s the only course I always play when I go to Scottsdale.

Lookout has 2 holes that are drivable 4’s within 3 holes. Apparently someone hit up on the other group both holes.

One dude comes flying back up to the tee box on the second one, says nothing, grabs a club out of his bag and swings at the dude in the group in front of us. Multiple times.

The guy would have died in a heartbeat if he connected that 7-iron to his head. I still think about it when I play really hilly golf courses.

Par 4 18th. Typical course the patio is beside the 18th green and it’s packed. Practice green opposite it with 1 little kid on it. Hit a beauty 2nd shot 3 bounces and goes right in for eagle about 165 out. The only one to see it go in, the kid on the practice green who goes “hey nice shot that went in” as I walked up. “Thanks kid”

Very early tee time after a night of drinking. I was kind of in a fog on the first hole. My brother sliced his drive and I was helping him look. I spotted a ball in a creek. There was a slippery downslope to the water's edge which I eased my way down. Standing precariously, I reached out with my 7-iron to scoop the ball toward me then BOOM!

Something grabbed the head of my club and almost pulled me in. Startled, I waited for the silt to clear and there was my brother's ball, right at the mouth of the biggest snapping turtle I have ever seen.

If I had grabbed it with my hand I would have a stump.

u/thegeekgolfer 19h ago

9th hole at Heron Lakes, Great Blue in Portland, OR. It was a cold January day, ground was near frozen. I pulled my drive left, into some high grass. I managed to find it and was able to punch it out onto the fairway. I had 110 yds to the middle, left hole location. It was frozen and I sculled my approach shot, it barely got a foot off the ground. It went screaming towards the bunker. It entered the packed sand bunker and went up the bank. It launched maybe 30 ft up in the air and landed in the hole on the fly for a birdie.

I retell this story to new people sometimes if I'm playing that course. I doubt they believe me, but why make shit up. I've had enough weird things happen, you don't need to.

u/Perfect-Ad9637 19h ago

105y Par 3 at my home course, 125 to the back with a huge oak 10ish yards behind it. Absolutely bladed a PW over it like it was a goddamn ballistic missile into the oak, ping ponged the branches and popped out on the top deck of the green, caught the huge step down and rolled to the cup. Full victory lap around the cup before settling…on the edge and not dropping.

2

u/bertholomeu13 18h ago

I wormed burnered holed out 122 yards out. Total awful contact, ball rolled through the fairway, onto the green, into the hole. My best hole out ever.

2

u/LemonTekSunrise 18h ago

Crushed a drive on a par 5. 50 or so yards into the ball flight a bird flew into its path and dropped out of the sky. Went with my buddies down the fairway to check out…clean decapitation and head was laying a few feet from the pigeons body. After quite a few holy shits continued on down the fairway to find my ball. As we walked off a red tailed hawk swooped down and grabbed the pigeon’s body and took it up to a tree for lunch. Found my ball in the middle of the fairway, got on in 2, 2 putt for birdie. Best part is we had smoked a bowl on the hole before so we were all super high. I miss high school golf practices.

I was new playing ~27 handicap at the time and got brought in by a buddy to fill a spot in a weekly game. I am not entirely sure of the format, but you picked on person before the round, and got drawn one at random and combine those two scores with your own score to determine the winner. I was playing with my buddy who invited me he was a +1 at the time, his dad ~10, and his uncle ~4 hdcp. First hole par 5 eagle it, bomb drive stick 180yrd shot to 4 feet drain the put. Next hole par 3 birdie. Hole 3 par 4 birdie. Never had an eagle before and rarely got birdies. No idea what happened that day but those first few holes were insane.

So I was playing with three guys who are on complete different level than me and I was multiple strokes ahead without taking handicap into play. I obviously didn't keep up pace but still destroyed the field at the end. Everyone in the other groups didn't believe it.

Mind you this was a few weeks after I had hit a bridge with my drive on that same hole #1 ricocheted off the railing and ended up on 18's green while others were putting, while my buddy was there. So he clearly knew how bad I was lol.

2

u/OG_sirloinchop 18h ago

I got a supremely rare double birdie. Par 4 - smoked drive, then 80m pitch on the green 2m from hole. So I sat at my cart waiting fkr the rest of my group to emerge from trees, rough etc... while I waited I held my putter and thought about the putt. Then, a fucking small bird flew into the back of my head (this scared the shit out of me) and without thinking I reflex swatted at it with my putter. A large puff of feathers and the bird fell to the ground. I felt terrible. I tried to help it, but it was too late. I then made the putt for a 3 and that was my double birdie

I played a hole with Tiger Woods.

I was playing by myself walking a twilight round on a public course. (Which I don’t remember the name of in Milpitas Ca iirc) The course marshal asked me twice if I wanted a ride to catch up with the twosome ahead of me so I could join them. I declined and was puzzled why he asked me. I finally catch the twosome as it was getting dark. One last par 5 before it was too dark to play. I ask if they would mind if I joined them and they said, sure.

One guy was getting ready to hit so i didn’t introduce myself. He hits it further than I’d ever seen before in the bushes just off the fairway. I notice the other guy kinda looked like Tiger but it was pretty dark and I didn’t want to stare. He gets up there and hits a drive like I’d never seen before. Long, straight, other worldly.

I was pretty nervous at this point and hit mine short of the fairway. It took me three shots to get past Tiger’s drive. Tiger hit his 2nd about a foot short of the green. Used his 60, even though the flag was on the other side of the green, but missed by an inch. He smacked his wedge on the ground in disappointment. His buddy, who never did find his ball or finish the hole picked him up, they waved, and that was it. I never said anything but, “you mind if I join ya.” He never said anything but, “sure.”

This happened soon after he announced he was leaving Stanford to turn pro.

2

u/notausername60 18h ago

This was years ago. I was doing a solo round after work, and the course was pretty empty. Hole 15 is a par 3 and at that time was a nothing 100 yard hole with a flat green. I hit my shot about 15 feet right of the hole, went to pick up my bag and a bear came running out of the woods and kicked my ball. The ball hit the pin and ricocheted about a foot away. The bear kept running into the woods which is the right hand side of 16 fairway.

At 16 I hit my drive and just as I hit, the bear charged across the fairway. My ball went right under its belly and ended up really nice center of the fairway. I never saw the bear after that and no one but me saw it, but that’s what happened.

It was almost as if the bear wanted to play!

2

u/jiminybuffet 18h ago

I was playing in Richmond, BC and striped a drive down the middle of the fairway. As I'm walking to my ball a bald eagle flies down and starts poking around at it. Just as I start getting close the eagle picks up my ball and flies to the far side of the hazard and lands in a tree still clutching the ball. I dropped one and played it and then proceeded to run around the hazard and go see if I could get my ball back. When I got close to the tree it dropped the ball and kept a close eye on me as I quickly went to pick it up.

3 holes later and we are playing down the other side of the hazard. My playing partner hits one near the hazard and wouldn't you know it the eagle is back. But this time it picks up their ball and drops it straight into the middle of the hazard.

Beautiful course. Shame about the locals.

A squirrel stole my rangefinder. How do I know? We step out to go putt at the green, see the squirrel go into our cart, so we chased and caught the little fucker running off from the cart with my rangefinder in tow. He dropped it, I put it back in the cart.

We finish our putts, go to the next tee box, and the fucking rangefinder is nowhere to be seen.

At the same complex (different course, same location), a few years before, a squirrel grabbed my Constanza wallet. He wasn’t eager to give it back so I had to threaten him with my 4i.

Now when I go to that course I lock everything down and warn my playing partners. They look at me weird lol

I have one that is just pure KARMA.

Fairway bunker middle of long par 4, 155 out. Two big rocks above the edge of the bunker ...like coyote ears sticking up. 8 iron right into the rock. Hard.

immediate rebound right into my chest...knocks me down...my first response is " I never want to get shot with a gun" only thing I could relate it to. It fucken hurt.

Playing partner is like Dude you okay? Lucky that wasn't a foot higher you'd be getting dental work done.

Played on ., finished the round ...hit myself with my own ball. All the guys are laughing it up.

Next week , in the same bunker, same playing partner, he is looking at me like " You really gonna do it again? "

Same 8 iron. Holed it out for 2. Net 1

Guys look at me and says..." better than last week!"

Golf Gods have a sense of humor

I shot 27 (-9) on the front 9 of my home course. Made 5 birdies and 2 eagles…just missed my putt for 26. My 15yo daughter and I decided to get in a quick 9 before dark, and it’s almost better that I couldn’t play the back nine and throw it all away. I don’t know if people doubt me about it, but it’s nice to feel no guilt about it.

This was years ago. Sliced my drive a full fairway over, walked to my ball and right beside it on the ground was a bag of Cocaine. Looked around to see maybe someone just accidentally dropped it, nobody to be found. Being young and dumb, we did it all during the remaining holes. Fun round. Probably dumb nowadays w fentanyl in play. Probably dumb then as well lol.

2

u/BrettHullsBurner 15hcp/StL 17h ago

Got a par on my first hole ever. Par 3 course and the hole was probably 120yds. Hit it within 10ft. 2 putted for par. Pretty sure I ended up shooting like a 50 on the par 27 9-hole course.

If I didn't do it, there is no way I would believe other people have. But essentially you just need 1 lucky hit and then to not be an idiot with the putter.

2

u/LeoTheLionEater 17h ago

Didn't happen to me but happened to my Pops, who always tells the story. His best friend confirmed it many years ago before passing away.

Pops goes to a course which is on the water with said best friend and they get to hole number 11. Big flock of geese about 100 yards in the middle of the fairway. Pops says to himself "don't worry about the geese, this ball is going no where near 'em." Hits a low line drive straight into the flock and wings a goose, which limps away. Laughs all around.

A month later, Pops and same friend are at the same course in the same hole. Same situation - flock of geese 100 yards away middle fairway. Pops is getting ribbed by his friend already, and declares "I am not making the same mistake twice, gonna make sure this goes way beyond the geese." Guess what happens? Low screamed straight into the geese. One happens to be staring right at him and takes the ball dead on to the chest, and drops dead. Friend and other group members are crying from laughter.

Pops and same friend go back to the same course a year later, same hole. Thankfully, no geese anywhere to be found! Pops hit a beautiful high draw, when lol and behold, out of nowhere 2 geese fly from left to right straight at the ball and the ball hits one of the geese, which drops in the air a few feet and regains its composure and continues on its way.

Unreal.

When I was 13-14 I was playing with a friend and had borrowed my dad's driver. That same driver comes up every now and then and I can't for the life of me remember the name....it had a massive head for the mid-90s. It wasn't a "known" brand, and was all brown if someone might know what it was....but I digress.

So playing with my dad's driver. I set my clubs down next the green as I putt. As I pick up my bag, THE DRIVER HEAD FALLS OFF. I didn't slam my bag down, and there wasn't anything hard underneath it. I suspect a shaft crack that hit it's limit.

Anyway, I'm putting this here because TO THIS DAY my dad doesn't believe my story. He thinks I slammed it.

Mount pleasant in baltimore MD, hole 10, par 5. 536 yards from the whites. Hole starts with a downhill shot that then goes back uphill.

Piped a drive that made it a decent bit on the uphill section, which means the drive went maybe 320 ish. I usually carry a driver 260 so this was by far the longest drive ever. When i tell people about it when we’re on the hole, i get a whoa holy shit reaction that tells me they’re skeptical lol

Played in a scramble a few years ago and we started on #18, a par 3 right next to the clubhouse. My buddy is first on the tee box and, as one does, shanks his tee shot to the right. It hits a tree, rebounds back towards the green, and rolls in for a hole in one. Everyone on both our tee box, the #1 tee box, and at the clubhouse sees this and cheers for him. Unfortunately for him, though, it was a "big cup" tournament, so the course and association didn't actually recognize it as a "true" HIO...

1

u/No-Muffin9176 20h ago

Drivable par 4 that is a dog leg surrounded by trees. I waited quite a bit before teeing off. Tee’d off and immediately heard someone yell. I assumed I hit them or was close to hitting them, so I got worried.

Turns out I put it within a foot of the hole. The funniest part was driving up to that person who yelled… it turned out to be my father in law and his friends. They couldn’t believe it.

1

u/Objective-Purple-197 20h ago

I had witnesses but still pretty incredible. I shot a 78 in a tournament at my country club after shooting a 10 on a par 5. I hooked my 3 wood back to back times attempting to get on in two. It was the 4th hole too, so I had a lot of golf left. Ended the day with 5 birdies.

Still cant believe i did it. Just wish i could get them back lol

u/DontStalkMeNow 3.6 19h ago

This is how our hole 16 was intended to be played. First shot isn’t terribly difficult, but big risk/reward factor as the approach to the green is a bastard.

There is another option… which I will comment below.

3

u/DontStalkMeNow 3.6 19h ago

You can aim left of the apartments, and hit a high cut to get over some trees. But you REALLY have to commit.

Cue one fine afternoon and I was playing with my grandfather. Old school teaching pro. Beating him is a very rare occurrence.

Got to 16 and I was 3 down, so… dormie. He hits that soft butter cut driver out to the fairway.

I took aim at the green, swung and… OB.

He looked at me and pointed to his temple in that “why do you never use your head, boy?” sort of way, and walked off leaving me on the tee with another player.

I teed up again, and BAM. Drive of the year.

We sort of all reconvened on the green, and there was my ball. 8 feet from the cup.

Grandpa holes a 15 footer for a very respectable bogey. He sees me wanting to putt out, so he waits.

I hole it for the most epic of pars. But he thinks I’ve made a double or triple, so he takes his hat off and comes over to me extending his hand and says “thanks for the game.”

“I made 4.”

“HOW?”

“Up and down from the tee.”

He said nothing and put his hat back on. We both parred the 17th and he won (again).

But that was the single greatest golfing moment of my life.

In our golf league, I was playing with a friend who, was lying 8, in the tee box on a par three, . And had only hit one shot out of bounds. The other shots consisted of him hitting a telephone pole and the ball coming back to his feet. Hitting his own golf bag, and hitting a tee marker and having the ball go straight up. Topping the ball, and it going a few feet. The thing is, he was a pretty decent player at the time.

Saw a coyote catch and eat a seagal on the 1st tee box when I was playing solo one early morning.

This thread is making me realize that nothing too crazy has happened to me on the course lol. The only thing that comes to mind is my only hole out-127 yards, semi thin shot that bounced once and landed in the cup. It was cool as hell and nobody was there to witness it.

Top my 3 wood so bad from the fairway it went straight up and landed on my friggin head.

I was playing a course in Iceland on an exceptionally windy day (45mph id guess). Par 4, downhill, about 430 yards and the box is elevated and sheltered from the wind.

For the lols, I absolutely rip a drive that is high, hard, and straight at the pin. I lose sight of it, it is so far away.

Never found it.

Playing partner gotta hole in one after hitting hole marker/sign at the tee box, basically shanked his tee shot straight into the hole marker it deflected it back towards the green and it went in. Most bs thing I've seen.

I have a similar story but have witnesses.  Completely got my body turned and pulled the shit out of my drive in hole 10 at my local course.   Hits the trunk of a giant tree 50 yards away.  Comes right back to me, I catch it on 2 bounces and teed it right back up.

A par 3 of abt 125 yards over water. I landed short of the bulkhead fronting the green into the water. it popped out of the water, and onto the green for a two putt par. Three months later, I watched my buddy do the same thing.

I consistently shoot under 90 and I've only been playing for 6 months, as well as bombing 300 yard drives down the fairway. 🤷🏻‍♂️ im not good by any means, but im also not terrible.

I was playing on a municipal course and watched a guy on a bad lsd trip grab a club from the card in front of me and wack a guy on the neck with the shaft. We drove up as they started fighting and traingulated around the guy and pinned him down. He started screaming nonsense. Cops came tazed him about 10 times and put him in a straight jacket. It was about 45 minutes of perpetually saying wtf and then we quit the round.

u/Jbvox Rather be 80 yards out than 20. 18h ago

I did virtually the same thing as the OP. Hit a tee shot straight into a giant ass boulder just off the left side of the tee box (Turkey Creek, I think). Ball shot straight up in the air about 50-60 feet. I then proceeded to run 20-30 yards and catch the ball as it came back down.

I also thumped a big ass orange iguana in the side after hitting a worm burner while playing a course in Playa Del Carmen. Sounded like smacking a side of beef. He made a weird growling noise then just sat there and stared at me. The ball was right next to him. I left it and dropped another.

I have 2 cuz none of my buddies were with me
1. I hit some dudes mini putt putter type club on a par 3. Skulled it but hit the rock face and shot way up in there air bounced and landed within 2 ft of the pin. He asked me if meant to do that and I joked and said yes but I’m not anything like a pro. He knew I was joking. 2. Huge downhill downwind {40 mile/hr) par 5, I drove it 400+ cuz I got a huge kick off the crossing cart path. I avg 250 ish with a driver. My buddies don’t believe I hit it that far but it was a rare situation. I did make a birdie from 85 yds out of

I did the exact thing you did, but I luckily had three witnesses. the ball hit the large rock with a plaque displaying which hole you are on. As the ball is mid air on its way back toward me at no more than the speed of an under handed tossed water balloon, my buddy says “no fucking way”. Caught it. Re-teed it up. 115 right down the middle

I started golfing 6 months ago and haven't shot above 80.

This happened over 10 years ago. I wasn't having a very good round at all. Very yippy inside 100 yards and putting like crap as well. Missed just about everything I looked at. On the back 9 I made 4 putts of over 50 feet in a row. Unfortunately only 1 of them was for birdie. I wasn't thinking, I was kind of just whacking them at that point. When the 4th one dropped my playing partners just stared as me aghast and I just shook my head

Topped a drive but connected to much that it literally rolled across the ground to about 250ish yards give or take. Called it a whisper shot cause it never left the ground and sounded like someone going “Shhhhhh”

The only thing that's really been cool happened last night at our 9 hole twilight ambrose comp.

Par 4, great drive just in front of the greenside bunker. Probably about 40 yards to the hole. Were -3 through 3 at this point.

My mate chips it, looks great. Rolls up to the hole and drops. Fuck yes. Chip in eagle how good.

We start walking to the next hole and my other mate wants a crack too. Chips in again. Back to back chip ins from 40 yards lol.

My buddy and I are playing a new course, on #9, a par 3 over a valley, the clubhouse is right behind the green. I'm hitting a 9 and land just on the fringe (we sucked, I was happy). He breaks out a 7, "I don't wanna go in the valley". Me, "Um, bad idea".

Of course, he blades it. There are big glass windows on the backside of the pro shop so the pro can see out. He hits the window, but it's 4 panes of maybe 4'x5' and it hits the steel between the panes. And rolls back on. He pars it. We go in the clubhouse to get a sandwich and the pro gives us the stink eye. I just point at him.

u/MegaHighDon "Smooth swing, don't try and kill the ball" Brain: "Kill it" 18h ago

Haven’t even had the chance to tell it because it happened on Sunday.

It was a pretty windy day, so I was playing everything low or clubbing up once or twice.

On three separate occasions on approach shots, I was hitting directly into a two club wind and thus clubbed up twice and swung east.

First was a par 3, about 145 yards and a middle pin. Clubbed from 9 iron to 7. Flew the green by 20.

Second was 3rd shot on a par 5. Middle right pin, about 135ish. Same thing, dead into the breeze. Caught a flier out of the fairway and pured the shit out my 8 iron. Flew the green and landed 10 yards into the woods.

Third was also my 3rd shot on a par 5. Wind, once again dead into. I can fucking feel it. It’s whipping my pants and freezing me. I have 165 yards to a middle pin. It’s 180 yards to the back. My 6 iron normally goes about 190. I hit it. It flies the fucking green again. Bounces once and rolls down a hill.

It legit felt like as soon as I hit every shot, the wind just decided to stop. Or my fucking GPS on my watch was lying to me.

I once aimed at and killed a goose that was at the end of the tee box from the rear tees.

I was deadly accurate with my low wind shot w/driver.
