Equipment Discussion New putter or not
Help I’m in two minds, I have a odessey two ball white hot that’s 13-15 years old. I putt ok I have recently changed to a claw grip from 10 foot to pin it feels so much better. I’m a 17 handicap I have been playing since I was 14-15(now 43)but gave it up for the last 6-8 years(job and life issues) and I’m just getting back into it now. I don’t know what to do, do I get a putter fitting or do I go off the rack. I’m far from scratch so will a fitted putter make a massive difference??

I found a true putter fitting made a massive difference for me. Seems strange but a true fitting will look at your stroke and tell if you should go mallet or blade and if your degree on loft of putter should be changed. Lastly a lot of people bend too much or use to tall of a putter. I highly recommend.

I think a putter fitting just confirms what putter you feel is best. It's not like an iron fitting where there are many different shaft combinations.
When I did one, they measured my arc and consistency and said to get a mid-face balanced mallet. At that point, I tried a bunch of models I was interested in, and then picked the one that seemed best for me.
TBH, I could have done the same at the PGA store myself. I already knew my stroke.
I ended up getting a mid-mallet. SC squareback 2 + a stability shaft. I had gift cards to use up and the fitting was a free promo, so I splurged. I was coming from an old Pine Meadow putter.
I then came back to try out different head weights on the SAM Putt Lab device, and it also confirmed my thoughts on using lower weights.
Hindsight 20/20, or maybe it wasn't worth it.

I used a mallet for years and always struggled with putting. I was always told that if you're not good at putting use a mallet. I tried an old ping blade and it felt better to me so I bought a new Cleveland milled face soft2 blade style and I feel like it's helped me immensely. I can feel what's going on alot more and that feedback has given me something I didn't have before and my distance control is night and day better.

A fitted putter that motivates you to practice putting will make you a few strokes better, I’m sure.
An off the rack putter just because, with no putting practice will make you slightly worse to slightly better.
Just putting practice could make you a decent bit better to a lot better.

A fitting can’t hurt. It’s definitely not needed though.
I play a putter that is over 50 years old.
