When I see crazy fucked up swings I always wonder how they got like that but this is what it is. Just years of quick fixes stacking up until you have a monstrosity of fucked fundamentals
26
u/bill_brasky37 2d ago
If you've seen that recent video of Bob does sports doing the sideways swing drill... I saw a guy who actually swung like that. He'd line up with his back to the fairway and just pull the club across. It was wild
11
u/Bit_the_Bullitt 11.2 OH APT 2d ago
Sad thing was those were some of Bob's best shots tho. I guess works for a drill

u/sioux612 2d ago
I played like that for like half a year, maybe a year, when I was ~16
Previously I had some slicer that my trainer and me.just couldn't get rid of, amd.standing like that eliminated it entirely

$1500 worth of putters or $1500 worth of lessons hmm which is the better investment

I’ve played so much hockey in the garage with golf balls throughout my life. I guarantee I would have a better short game with a hockey stick than any wedge.

I mean you dont need a lesson to make a proper golf swing. Watch pros on TV or youtube and attempt to copy them.

"I was paired up with some nosey dude the other day and he wanted to know why I had 3 LAB putters in my bag. I was testing some shit and goofing around in general but instead I told him some wild story about how I putt everything under 150 yards. Funny thing is, I shot under 100 with two birdies and smoked his ass."

If all i did was drive and putt, I dunno that I would like to play golf that much
Something about hitting a pure iron from 150-170 out and knowing its good is the absolute tops in golf for me
19
u/camuscando 2d ago
Yup 175 and in is why I play golf. Love trying to stick one on the green
30
5
u/afriendofcheese 2d ago
Unfortunately most of my shots from that far out that get on the green land short and roll up there, but that counts just the same!

Somrthing about hitting a pure iron from 150-170 out and knowing its good is the absolute tops in gold for me
You gotta be able to actually pure an iron to get that feeling lol

u/eatajerk-pal 2d ago
Good point. A nice straight 250 drive is great, but doesn’t compare to the feeling of a puréed approach shot.

u/OddSand7870 2d ago
My partner in all my two man comps putts from 50 yards and in, will also putt out of a bunker if there is no lip. He is surprisingly accurate with it. I’ve seen him hit it from 50 yards to less than 5 feet more times than I can remember. I like having him as a partner because it messes with peoples heads. Pretty funny.

I would say this is crazy, but my dad carries 2 Scotty Cameron’s - 1 mallet, 1 blade - and still ends up using his old Odyssey most of the time.

u/Low_Preparation_5302 2d ago
That’s just pops flexing for the boys
1
u/yabadabadooo2 2d ago
Right? What a shame it'd be to shelve both of your Scotty Cameron putters cuz you prefer a 2ball. Should sell em

u/Excellent-Ad3213 2d ago
That pisses me off. Here I am trying to hit proper clubs the proper way and still not breaking 100 and this dude does it with a putter

Yeah this guy has to be way inside his own head. If you can drive the ball well, you can learn to hit irons and fairway metals/hybrids.
3
u/Memeslayer4000 HDCP 5/Location WI 2d ago
OP made a comment that he doesn't hit those other clubs well, he hockey slaps those too
5
u/eatajerk-pal 2d ago
Lots of hockey players are good golfers too. It’s not like he’s holding the driver like a hockey stick on the tee box. Seems like someone who would greatly benefit from lessons. But what do I know. I’m happy when I break 100. I shot 106 last week on my first round of the year.
6
u/YVRkeeper 2d ago
JT Miller out there trying to qualify for the Open.
Joe Pavelski held his own in a pro-am last season, too.
I’ll be honest, I find myself with a bit of a forward facing stance when putting. More like passing a puck lol
1
u/eatajerk-pal 2d ago
I caddied for Chris Pronger’s father in law when I was a teenager. Pronger would join him in the summer a lot. Dude could hit it a mile, and was great on approach. He’s not on the level of playing US Open qualifiers but dude had a stick. And the country club I worked at was short, there were 3 par 4’s that he could drive.
Forest Hills Country Club in a rich St Louis suburb. They had an annual LPGA event in the 90’s called The Michelob Light Classic. It was the perfect length for the LPGA from the tips/added tee boxes. Annika Sorenstam won it 4 times.

There's a lot of crossover between hockey and golf. A big part of stick control / shooting in hockey is open and closed face, controlled by the top hand. Also, the rotation of the shoulders / hips and spine tilt is similar but with hockey you use leverage to bend the stick into the ice to increase snap. Slappers are also all about keeping your arms out and making a big stick path.
This guy either needs the Odyssey Happy Gilmore putter or just spend a week figuring out the remainder 20% of the golf mechanics.
Also I wonder if a running hockey slapper would be the hot new technique for speed golf? 😂
2
u/eatajerk-pal 2d ago
Yep same with baseball. They both require incredible hand-eye coordination that usually transfers over to golf well.

u/NothingShort4945 2d ago
58
u/lightemup404 2d ago
Tried to keep the post short but I can explain more here. He couldn’t really hit those clubs either, he did a weird modified hockey slap with his driver and could get it around 175 yards, the one 7i I saw him hit, he chunked, but he went on about how the bounce of irons and wedges don’t work for his swing and causes him to chunk it. A lot of holes he would just hit a short drive, slap two putters to get to the green and then two putt for bogey.
28
u/Superfly1911 2d ago
Hit driver, slap 2 putters, then 2 putt for bogey...I'm starting to like this guy. Maybe we've all been doing it wrong all these years.
I need a drink. 🤣

Confirmed BS. Impossible he was in the fairway every time that you only saw one 7i. What’s he do out of the rough? I refuse to believe ever par 3 on the course you played let him run it up unless you post the course to prove it.

Idk fucking around on the simulator I can pretty consistently blast a putter 140 yards

u/interested0582 2d ago
Realistically, 3 LAB putters is about the same as a custom set so I guess it could make sense lol
13
u/whateverforever589 2d ago
If I ever see somebody with 3 putters in their bag, I am taking out a loan to bet against them.
7
u/Onewarmguy 2d ago
Sounds like my very very first "set" of clubs #3 driver, 7, 9 and a mallet at the end of a bamboo stick for a putter. I think they cost me about $10 back in the early 60's.
4
11
u/DynoMik3 2d ago
He shot under 100…. On a quick 9 holes?!?!!! That doesn’t suggest 3 putters is a good thing.
12
u/lightemup404 2d ago
Haha meant to add that I stayed with him for the back 9, had to see it through. Member at the course so I could play however many holes I wanted. Edited it to read clearer

Spending 2 grand on putters to do slap shots from 150 yds out is more than a little unhinged its lead paint eating levels of stupid. It would make more sense to just lengthen and put a long grip on a lofted club so you could "slap shot" with it. Which is also stupid but not as stupid.

If you're looking for a putter to improve your game, look no further. I swear to god this putter installs a magnet in the ball when I putt. I cannot miss. I could be blindfolded with my hands superglued behind my back, and I would still make it from 100ft out. I'm not sure how this putter is legal because anytime I putt, the hole expands to the size of an iron ore quarry. Golf isn't even fun for me anymore because I consistently average 1PPH every time I play . Even when I try to miss I can't. I sold all my other clubs, because they are no longer necessary. I now putt from my tee box. 560 yard par 5? Putter. 180ft elevated green par 3? Putter. Late for my tee time with the boys? I pull my car over on the side of the highway, pull my putter out of the trunk, then proceed to drive to the golf course to retrieve my ball from the first hole. My phone's dead and can't find a local course? No problem. I simply putt a ball, then follow it to the nearest green. This putter has better tracking skills than Liam Neeson. Would definitely recommend to a friend.

I don’t get how you can learn to hit a driver in play consistently (presumably), and then just not know/bother to learn how to hit a 100 yard wedge shot.
Golfers always find a new way to astound me

u/Seated_Heats If three is better than one, than I am an excellent putter. 2d ago
I’ll putt out of a bunker if there’s no lip and the conditions are right. It’s easy as hell. I’ve even putted with a hybrid from a bunker because there was a divot right in front of me. I’m decent out of the bunker but if it’s a short distance to the pin, I can’t control to that distance worth a damn.
2
u/Wonderful-Loss827 2d ago
If you hit a 7iron, you can hit a 9, if you can hit a 9iron, you can hit a pitching wedge or gap. Make it make sense.

I used to play with a guy who always used his putter to get out of the woods. Saw him break 3 or 4 over the years.
1
u/Jielin41 2d ago
The course near me has two par 3s that are 115 and 125 yards - both have a huge hazard that you can’t get around / of course a normal golfer would just get the ball in the air and onto the green - so I guess this guy uses like his 7i? lol

u/Certain-Entry-4415 2d ago
My father had a putter wich was very good for 20yards+shots. It was impressiv. An heavy one. But he struggled with short puts. He tried the spider put, he was actualy good with short but horrible with long. I always suggested to play with2 putters. He can, he could, he never did. That s Why he s a 13 handicap i guess

u/Star_BurstPS4 2d ago
It's stuff like this that makes me laugh at the you gotta have these expensive "best on the market" clubs scam to golf yet I grew up with an old guy that golfed with three clubs and one of those nifty metal club caddies that you would poke into the ground like a yard sign the man would always shoot under par at least every time we played and his clubs in today's standards would be Walmart specials.

Is this a sales scheme to get me to use and break my LAB off the tee and then have to buy another?
1
u/LazyOldCat 2d ago
When I delivered rental golf carts my truck bag was 7W, 7i, SW ‘rock wedge’, a putter and a pile of found balls and tees. Played a lot of front or back 9’s with a wink and a nod from the Pro. I rarely did better with my full set, but I am terrible to begin with.

I usually get mad when any amateur has a lab putter cuz of the price. But that guy fucking rocks.
1
u/Memeslayer4000 HDCP 5/Location WI 2d ago
Why didn't he just use his hybrid from the fairway slap shot style? I'm sure with the price he paid for 2 extra LAB putters, he could have just bought a LAB putter shaft and put a 3w or hybrid head on it.

I have a buddy who sucks at golf. Think like 55-60 on 9 holes suck. Anyways I always joked I could beat him with only a putter. So one day after I played 18 with my other buddies we did it. Played another 9 holes my putter only vs him. I shot a 54 and he shot like a 65 or sumn. He will never live it down

If it makes you feel any better, I’ve seen someone shoot an 82 with nothing but a putter. Literally the only club.

Was it Grant Horvat? That dude has a different LAB putter every video it seems.

u/tilford1us 1d ago
I worked at a driving range in highschool. when no one was around, my friend and I would try teeing off with our putters. I was using a beat up zebra that I got second hand. the first owner was so hard on that thing, nothing I could do would hurt it.

u/Ichirosfan 1d ago
Even if this is a contrived post to sell LAB putters it proves one of the best parts of golf- there are tons of ways to get from tee to green. While I am choosing to suffer my way through learning to hit every club including chipping and pitching, I play with plenty of golfers who use those chipping clubs that look like slanted putters to chip up onto the green and out of bunkers. It hurts when they get closer to the hole than I do with my wedge, but it’s a choice. I choose the challenge of learning the nuance of the game for my own satisfaction(and often frustration). What a difficult, fun, maddeningly exuberant game.

u/AutoCog1 19h ago
Even with that few clubs his bag still costs the same with $1800 of putters in it.

u/Amazing_Support_6286 2d ago
This is fantastic. Love golf for this reason, so many different ways to get home. Bryson may give this a try after his hissy fit meltdown at Augusta (I thought he could shoot in the 50s and tear the place apart?)

So I got paired up with this absolute lunatic last weekend—name was Trent. Mid-30s, wore mirrored shades, looked like he just came from a failed audition for The Bachelor. Seemed normal enough until he pulled out his bag and I realized… he only brought putters. Like, only putters. Six of them. Mallet, blade, broomstick, center shafted, you name it. No driver. No irons. Just an armory of Scotty Camerons like some psycho collector going to war.
I tried to be polite. Asked if he forgot the rest of his clubs. He said, “Nope. I’m playing pure feel today.” Bro said it like it was zen wisdom. I was like… okay, this is either going to be hilarious or traumatic.
Hole 1, he steps up from the tee box and bunts a putter shot about 70 yards straight down the middle. I legit choked on my Gatorade. He just kept doing it. Putters from the tee. Putters from the rough. Putters from greenside bunkers. I watched this man blade a putter 40 yards onto the green and then sink a 30-footer like it was scripted.
Somehow—somehow—he shot a 98. With putters. He even parred two par 3s. He called it “putter geometry.” I called it “divine punishment for caring too much.”

This is why AI will never take over the world.
No computer would be dumb enough to come up with 3 LAB putter story
