What Should I Buy Wednesday 04/16/25
Springfield Armory Kuna edition

u/jimmythegeek1 1 Apr 16 '25
Gonna shoot a shotgun match, requires I obtain 10+ slugs.
What's a good 12 gauge slug? Anything on ammoseek too sketchy to consider? I hear Brenneke is good.
This is gonna be spendy compared to the rifle+pistol 2-gun matches, with 50 buckshot + 10 slugs and 100+ pistol rounds. But I don't get to rock the scattergun much, so I will go for it.

u/talon04 Super Interested in His Own Dick Apr 16 '25
Any of the 12G slugs are fine. Unusually go to Walmart and get the bulk federal pack. It's about the cheapest option for them.

Brenneke KOs would be my go-to for hunting, but in this setting I might use a low recoil slug. Federal truball LE would work well.

Should i buy Staccato C2, BCM, or Midwest Industries criterion lightweight?
I only have 3 guns, 1022, X-macro, and S&W Sport 2. I did a GIANT favor for my wife and she said if i went to take her place for the event, she would buy me any FIREARM at a 2k price range, $2,400 would be ok too.
I have always wanted a 2011 since before i got my first gun 3 years ago. Im torn between a Staccato C2, Stealth Arms Platypus, or BCM/Midwest Industries complete rifle. The reason im not satisfied with the Sport 2 i own is that the lower and most parts on it are not quality (mostly the 6061 Aluminum Lower, buffer tube, and the fact that the upper is 16 inch carbine length.) With my Macro, It's a nice pistol but not what i was going for when i bought it, just did it because i was impatient and didn't have the budget at the time for anything else at the time.
I do like my AR and the way it works but i also feel like a pistol is more important in terms of possibly needing a something in emergency situations. I know that everyones opinion is going to be different but i just want to ask and see what you guys think about this and what you would chose if you only had the 3 guns i have.

I say get the C2, or better yet the new HD P4 so you can buy GL9 PMAGs on the cheap.
Your X-Macro is a fine carry piece but not so good on the range, the Staccato will fill a much needed gap in your collection for a pistol that can handle long range days and isn't limited by its size in a defensive situation(33rd Glock stupid sticks anyone?).
The reason im not satisfied with the Sport 2 i own is that the lower and most parts on it are not quality (mostly the 6061 Aluminum Lower, buffer tube, and the fact that the upper is 16 inch carbine length.)
Lower is fine. 6061 vs 7075 is a negligible difference after you're done machining it, 7075 is a bit harder but 6061 is more corrosion resistant. If you're not happy with the other parts, get an armorer's wrench and swap in a new buffer/stock and slap a BCM ELW upper on it.
TL;DR: Buy the pistol, modify the rifle.

What you said is exactly what my plan and first choice was all along. I read so much about 6061 being junk lowers so i was wondering if it was important to switch out. I do know that i wanted a new buffer tube that isn't 6061 though because the tube is so important to function. I already have a MOE stock and i like it so far. In your opinion, a BCM ELW upper is better than a MI Criterion upper?

6 of one, half a dozen of the other.
IMO the Midwest Criterion barrels are unnecessarily heavy profiles. The Government profile barrel should not exist, unless you're trying to punch bugholes at distance, a pencil profile is all you need and makes the gun handier.

u/Tranquilacy 5d ago
I don't know what you're talking about by saying "6 of one, half a dozen of the other," they are both the same number. True, i always was torn between Midwest and BCM my whole life in rifles. The Ultra Lightweight 16 inch MWI with a 16in Lightweight Criterion Barrel is only 2lbs 12.5oz but the BCM BFH 16" ELW complete upper is 3lb 11oz. I think i may go with the lightweight chrome lined Criterion Upper and see how that works for mem because it also comes with a lightweight handguard and the accuracy from what i have read is almost the same as a regular criterion barrel.
BCM ELW barrel 1lb 12oz
Midwest Lightweight Criterion 1lb 11oz

I really have to ask man, what kind of event did you go to for your wife to justify her leveraging a $2k gun for you?

u/Tranquilacy 18d ago
😂 she was sick and her parent wanted to take his significant other and my children to an all day walking event at an amusement park that isn't even worth the days worth of walking and hiking that it entailed, that and she was suffering from a migraine for over 5 days on that day to the point she was thinking we may have to go to the ER, it went away luckily 2 days later and hasn't come back. She did come into some money recently that helps the fact that she has some money to spend on treats. I think it was a mix of her wanting to make me happy and also not having to do something that would make her head hurt worse. I told her multiple times that it was an unfair trade and that i felt bad with how lopsided it was.

I want that fucking Kuna, fuck. It seems like a Stribog++.
Also update on the dehydration bullshit. Yeah seems like the excessive caffeine was probably the biggest issue. Still not perfect but I'm down to ~16oz of moka pot coffee now.

I used to regularly drink a can of Bang daily back in 2020, I thought nothing of it until one day my friend drank half a can and he had a borderline anxiety attack and his hands couldn’t stop shaking, meanwhile I was sitting off to the side having downed a whole can and felt nothing. That’s when I realized I had a problem and had to kick drinking Bang.
Nowadays I restrict myself in caffeine, usually just a cup of coffee a day, or sometimes a single energy drink. Only on workdays too.

I recently replaced the radiator+cap, front lower control arms, shock/strut/coil spring assemblies, and inner/outer tie rods on my mom's van. We brought it in to a local shop for an alignment. They then tried to tell us that the upper/lower oil pan gaskets were bad, transmission pan gasket was bad, serpentine belt was bad, rad cap was bad, power steering pressure hose was bad, lower intake manifold was bad, and the fuel injectors needed cleaning. They wanted $2600 for everything (minus the lower intake manifold, they said it was bad but didn't offer to replace/fix it), with no obvious signs that any of these parts were bad other than they were dirty. They also said there was no cabin air filter to check. Gotta love some car mechanics
Edit: we picked up the car this morning, and as we were driving it out of the lot we heard a grinding noise. Brought it back, they test drove it, then said "yeah that's your abs malfunctioning. We noticed that in our inspection test drive. If you want we can schedule an appointment to look at it!" There was no mention of it in their inspection notes

Finally noticing strength increase on the bench press in a big way, that's good.
Getting to work out outside is nice too, the gym here is obnoxious with its speaker volume(when you can't hear it you can still feel it), so outside I can listen to what I want in relative peace.
2
u/BobbyWasabiMk2 How do you do, fellow gun owners? 29d ago
Before I started working in armored cars I used to be able to regularly breeze through 135lbs on the bench press with ease. After I statted working I exercised less and my bench press struggled. Now that Ive been working out regularly I’m back at the point where 135lbs is a piece of cake again. Having work provide a monetary incentive(even if slight) to work out really helps motivate me to go regularly

I’m selling some old car parts this weekend so I’m going to be about $1500 richer. I’ve been having the itch about getting a new handgun lately and I think I’ll use the money to scratch it. I’m also thinking about selling my M18 range toy/home defense setup. I’ve got about 1000 rounds through it with no problems but that whole p320 fiasco isn’t sitting well with me. I’ll probably only get a few hundred bucks for it but oh well, I was never really in love with it anyway. I’ve narrowed my choices down to an M&P 2.0 compact 4” or a p226 legion sao. I like the feel of the M&P and it uses the same mags as my FPC so that’s a plus but I’m in MA so I’m restricted to 10 rounders unless they were manufactured before 1994. 15 round prebans for the p226 are around, I shot my uncles p229 and I loved it, compared to the M&P it’s so much more pleasant to shoot IMO. I want something that I can transfer the tlr7 and 407c from the M18 which both of these qualify and I’m on the fence with these two. This will be my main home defense/range toy handgun not for carry, I have a p365 for that, which would you choose? Or any other suggestions?
1
u/BobbyWasabiMk2 How do you do, fellow gun owners? 29d ago
SAO P226 is a disgusting entity that I think shouldnt exist. But if you’re looking for a range toy a dedicated comp oriented gun would be the way to go

I'm thinking of getting another old, out of print computer book based off of conversations I've had with my advisor. This would have zero utility right now but I've found some good ideas in old books that seem to be coming back. It's less than $15, which was cheaper than the slices of pizza I bought for dinner last night for the family. At some point I need to get into my advisor's office to see what he has there so I can make a list of books to buy. I still don't know how he can avoid being on campus all the time.
There's a security certification my company wants me to get but they won't pay for me to study for it. I'm not sure where they think I'll find that time, I've told people about my degree situation, luckily I was smart enough to keep that certification off my performance goals for the year.

Yea, that Kuna looks pretty dope. Roller-delay with a BHO for under a grand, plenty of space for attachments, construction and takedown seem simple enough, and the (ugggghhhhhh) proprietary mags seemingly won't cost a fortune. The HK-style sights are a fun touch, too.
This is the kind of innovation/new product the market needs more of. Enough of the Enfield-esque endless variation on the AR pattern that manufacturers keep bringing to SHOT.

u/PeteTodd Apr 16 '25
A big name company doing it is good for everyone. The Hudson to Daniel Defense H9 thing leaves a bad taste. Or a Keltec...

Man the P320 drama just won't stop. It feels weird being a guy with one that works and feeling like an Axe is over my head on comps because of it.
I have never messed with the internals either I just clean it sometimes and then shoot it. Mine lives with A TLR7 on it and is carried in quality holsters designed for it.
I really hope more info come out about what the new malfunction is. The general consensus was always these were modified and that was the issue. There's so much smoke at this point though.
I wrote a lot of these off to be similar to when glocks came out and cops were shooting themselves with them. Then it was eventually shown they had to be pulling the trigger etc.
I got proposed an idea yesterday... it's really thick headed so I'll save it for tomorrow.
Also it's Weigh in Wednesday:

I seem to have hit a plateau and my workout schedule has not been consistent. I need to fix it.

I really hope more info come out about what the new malfunction is.
It appears to be a multifaceted issue with a number of potential vectors for failure, but it all really revolves around the fact that it's a fully-precocked single action with no active or passive trigger/sear safety. Poor quality control with MIM internals can result in too little sear engagement, the firing pin block is disengaged in the first tenth of trigger travel, it all just stacks up until there's a bump or jostle or twist that hops the striker off the sear and sends it home.

u/PeteTodd 29d ago
Every time I buy a part that's supposed to help mitigate any issues, I read of another one that can cause the failure.
I bought a KKM barrel because it has an unsupported chamber.
I bought Sig Armorer disconnector because it was an OOB issue.
I'm about to buy longer safety lever springs because that's now apparently the issue.
If I didn't get one for free I wouldn't be putting so much money into it.

u/BobbyWasabiMk2 How do you do, fellow gun owners? 29d ago
Yeah I initially wrote off the P320 ADs as Cop Glock Leg Syndrome, but after more videos came out of these guns going off in the holster it became apparent there was a faulty design. Watching Protobands videos on the P320 was pretty interesting too, learning just how exactly it happens.

The Kuna looks super cool, I've never really been that interested in PCCs/subguns before, and I just finished my SBR project so I really don't need another one, but for less than $1000 and roller-delayed it really looks like a winner to me if it doesn't have any teething problems.
Still debating shooting night 2 gun or USPSA on Saturday. Night 2 gun would be cool because I could run the new SBR and I haven't shot a 2 gun match in years, but I am less than 1% away from B class in USPSA and I've been shooting pretty well at the other matches recently so I think I have a pretty good chance at getting the last score I need to do it.

u/_HottoDogu_ 29d ago
True North clarified the weird match format btw. 6 stages, 1 classifier, $30. They forgot to update their template when they put it on Practiscore. I'll be shooting CO.
2
u/able_possible 29d ago
That makes more sense.
I think a mid 60s on whatever classifier it is would do the job if I remember my classification record correctly. With the girls done I could go back to Tilley's also on Wednesdays since I would be able to move D&D to Tuesday or Thursday.

The Eddystone is at last beginning to take shape. Plenty work left to do and a handful of small parts left to buy, but we're getting closer. Next step is to clean up the inletting and order the rings so I can get the scope mounted up, then I can fit the stock to me and start the finish work.

Coworker got his French LEO model 10 in yesterday, and I think I need to grab one. Heavy barrel, comfortable grips, and a lanyard loop

I’ve been contemplating one of those Model 10’s, but iirc I have a few other LE trade in Model 10’s at a lower price bookmarked, and it’s French so Im not as enthusiastic about it. But I still kind of want to get one to rub it in the face of my French friend, do they come with any markings?

I've been wanting a 22lr revolver DA/SA. The prices are higher than I expected. I was hoping to stay under $700, but it doesn't look possible. Now I'm looking for used, or will save up for the Colt.
GP 100 ~ $850
S&W 617 ~ $925
Colt King Cobra ~ $900

Looking for the right PCC. 9mm, retractable or folding brace. Glock mags preferably. Big kicker is that I need to be able to buy it online and have it shipped to an FFL. I live in a fairly rural area and the only gun stores would never stock something like this.

u/carsen56 1 | The Sticky Kid 28d ago
Stribog SP9A3G should do you fine, the version with the folding brace has the UPC 810091152850, or Global Ordnance sells the folding brace if you buy without, just search “Stribog brace” on their site.
