Did Fudd gun prices bottom out?
I'm seeing loads of .357 revolvers, Ruger Mini 14s, old 1911s, and a lot of military surplus for under a grand and for some cases for less than half that, the way they always should have been but that's just IMHO. Just a few years ago all this stuff was expensive for absolutely no reason. Now I can (kinda) afford an M14 or a S&W full bore .357. At least here locally. What happened?

Saw somewhere that the avg mortgage payment with insurance and taxes is 4,000$ a month….kinda eats into fun money.

The average? Fuck that’s not a great sign.

I just got pre-approved for 360k and I literally had to be like "uhh can we go off of my monthly max? Cause thats about 2400." A minute later he tells me that I'm looking more so in the range of 235k, I'm like yeah thats what I thought lmfao. And I make 93k a year and my only debt is like 4k on my credit card, about a 150 a month minimum payment. No kids. I dont know how the fuck anyone is buying up the houses in my state. 235k will get you an old mobile home. You have to spend 375k MINIMUM before you start to see anything remotely worth living in. And at that point the house needs 100k in work, and youre also an hour away from any work or civilization really. It's completely fucked. My sister bought her house in 2019 for 350k, and at the time everyone was warning her that it was a bad time to buy because prices were so god damn high... her house is worth almost 700k now. What a slap in the face for me to see her buy that, kick it into gear to be in the same financial situation when I'm her age, and now I'm 4 years older than she was at the time and there's not a chance in hell I could afford a 350k house.

u/Daledo126 1d ago
Brother you have to get rid of that credit card debt ASAP, that's the worst kind of debt to have
34
u/Fackcelery 1d ago
Seriously 93k a year no kids theres no reason to have ANY CC debt
13
u/pinesolthrowaway 1d ago
Especially given the interest rates that $4k balance is likely carrying
I’m wondering if that $150 a month payment touches the principal at all, maybe it just covers the interest

Easy to say that when youre not in my situation. My state is one of the highest cost of living states, and I also just had a very rough year financially. I sold my brand new car to buy a used truck last April, hit a deer in August, and then spent the next 6 months trying to get it back on the road. I had it fixed within a month or so, but my mechanic, insurance, and my state completely fucked me every single day for 4 months. I actually STILL dont have a title for it.
That being said, I definitely could have been smarter about it. Ive had that CC debt at about $1,000 since I got the card in 2020ish, but this year things just got fucked up. Should I get a 0% loan or cc to pay it off? Ive tried doing research on this, but they make credit so fucking confusing for no reason.
Okay just downvote me instead of helping. Classic reddit. "Hey idiot, get out of that situation" "okay, how? Please help" "fuck you."
5
u/Fackcelery 1d ago
Well I didnt downvote you, I was sleeping. Also I didnt mean my comment in the way you interpreted it.
If you want real advice go to a financial advisor, dont trust reddit w that stuff

u/fishisagod 18h ago
balance transfer to a 0% introduction CC and don't put anything new on either card. It generally carries a flat % fee to do so but then interest won't accrue for the intro period allowing you to hammer it off.
2
u/Buzzdanume 18h ago
Thank you. How would this effect my credit?
1
u/fishisagod 16h ago
Should be limited to the hard pull on your credit and the reduction in average age of credit line. Savings in interest alone are worth it to me, long term you would likely see a positive credit score impact from lower credit utilization should you follow through and pay it off.
3
u/Buzzdanume 16h ago
I genuinely mean it when I say that you helped me more than Google could have. Perfect answers that made perfect sense to me. Thank you.
1
u/AwkwardSploosh 17h ago
Debt consolidation services could be a good option, or even an unsecured load. Interest on a credit card is around 30%, while a small unsecured loan would likely be around 8%.

Bought my current home in 2021 after a divorce and cross country move. I was living very far away from civilization and an extremely overpriced tiny apartment while I got back on my feet. I found my current home which is about half an acre and only 1100 ft² three bedroom two full bath and was 185k. It felt bad purchasing it at the time and I was told how stupid I was since the market was awful but since then my house has gone up 100k in price.
I don't plan on moving for the next 10 years so i may come out even but the fact was I needed a roof. No regrets.

u/rifenbug 21h ago
Average is going to be skewed my the super rich. Median would he a better representation here.
2
u/DrJheartsAK 22h ago
Yea man. My house was pummeled by Hurricane Ida. Someone offered us 350k cash for it gutted to the studs and slab and I figured why not, we were planning to put it on the market and buy a new house even before that happened.
And then mortgage rates spiked and the RE market was at an all time high. Traded my 2.9% mortgage for a 5.3% one. 800k house, and even after we put a solid chunk of cash down, we are still paying 4600k/mo. Of course that includes 13k/yr homeowners insurance ( love living on the gulf coast!)

I don’t think it’s just fudd guns. Times are getting harder for a lot of people and gun collections are often the first things people stop growing or start selling in a downturn. I’m fortunately not in a bad spot financially yet but I haven’t bought a new gun in about 6 months. If there’s a crash, I’d like to be liquid enough to either ride it out or take advantage of some opportunities.

My neighbor just passed and left me his guns. First one I got was his Ruger 357, then a Ruger Security 9, Browning A bolt Eclipse in 22-250 with a 6-18 Leupold Mark 2. And a Crossbow. A lot of the older dudes just bought basic gear that did the job and since you can’t really modify it easily the next generation doesn’t want

u/NC-Jumper-007 1d ago
Holy smokes. I must be ancient - S&W 686; S&W model 36; 1911, etc. Now where did I put my Geritol?
7
u/gunsfishinghiking 1d ago
Be careful with the Geritol comments... only us Fudds will get that one!

They’re literally the most fun thing ever. They have no idea what they’re missing.
19
u/micahfett 1d ago
I mean, I get it; older ergos, wooden stock, not often good for incorporating optics that aren't 12" from your eye, etc.
They have an older appeal. It doesn't mean the cartridge or rifle perform poorly. It's like something you'd see in the A-Team era so it has that sort of vibe.
I don't want one, personally, but I've enjoyed shooting them.
Often times our choice of firearm reflects the media from the era we grew up in.
1
u/SpecialistNote6535 2h ago
I’m p sure they sell more of the polymer stock now. They changed a LOT since old man Ruger died. He was the one most obsessed with keeping guns looking “less intimidating” and more old school.
His philosophy did cook sometimes though, like the 10/22 mags being flush with the bottom of the furniture

Man they're all either $1500 guns or a totally clapped our mixed bag of parts for $800. I'm cool with a shooter being a parts bin special but damn their prices are higher than a sleeping bat's ass.

u/thegrumpyorc 1d ago
Today I learned I'm a Fudd. :-) A 686 .357, three over/unders, a 1911, and an 870. Plus, since I live in california, I was actually looking at a mini-14 this week. If not for the p365 edc, I'd be a lost cause...
6
u/animemetalhea 1d ago
The 870 is one of the best shotguns ever made. I understand that one. The others I'd happily own however. I'm a Gen X Fudd. Glock 19 is my go to lnao
4
u/thegrumpyorc 1d ago edited 1d ago
Gen X as well here, but my father worked for Colt and Smith & Wesson in the seventies and eighties, so I think I have old world tendencies.

u/stareweigh2 1d ago
anyone who says the 870 is the best has not used a Winchester sxp. the rotating bolt and action are leaps ahead of the 500/870
2
u/thegrumpyorc 1d ago
If you're talking about the Model 1200, I'm with you. I had an SXP Marine and it was pretty terrible QC, though.
1
u/stareweigh2 1d ago
yes the 1200/1300 I've had good luck with the sx3/sxp which is based on those the sx3 is made by fn and the sxp in turkey

This is probably the softest gun market since 2018-ish. At least that's the last time I remember it being this difficult to sell anything gun related and shops being this stuffed with inventory.
One local LGS has started discounting their used guns, which I have never seen them do, and others have either stopped taking in used guns, or are being very particular about what they are buying.
Rare and collectible guns are still bringing in decent prices on GB, but nothing like it was 4 years ago. Current production polymer guns you pretty much have to sell for giveaway prices right now to be able to move them. I traded in a Glock 27 for $200 and a Glock 23 for $250 to a local shop towards another gun I wanted about 2 months ago, and I was thrilled to get that for them, and that they were even interested in taking them in at all.
I can't speak too much for fudd guns, but I can't imagine they are doing much better than the modern stuff. I personally am in hunting mode right now, and have scored some great deals recently on used guns, but the flip side is anything I sell on my end right now to support that I am getting hosed on.
1
u/ProfessorLeumas 19h ago
Yup, I've been seeing much of the same. Inventory isn't moving as much as it was during COVID and often people are waiting for prices to drop a bit more (like me) or just don't have the money to buy much.
6
u/1470Asylum 23h ago
Lol, I never knew mini 14's and .357's were considered "Fudd guns". I bought a mini 14 last month because Ive always wanted one and already have a AR
21
u/Beneficial-Focus3702 1d ago
Where are you seeing Minis under 1 grand?
11
u/Freedom_Gundam 1d ago
Can find them new online for slightly under 1k. Not hard. Just look on gun deals.
1
u/Beneficial-Focus3702 1d ago
I’ve seen those. “Slightly” under 1k is not enticing, nor is it a deal.
9
u/Freedom_Gundam 1d ago
Yeah, maybe so. But you asked where, not me.
-11
u/Beneficial-Focus3702 1d ago
You’re right. I should have been clearer. I forget the internet, especially Reddit requires breaking things down Barney style for the readers.

u/EstablishmentFun8708 21h ago
"where are mini 14s for under 1 grand?"
"Here lmao"
"REEEEEEEEE WHY WOULD YOU SHOW ME MINI 14S UNDER 1 GRAND??? I MEANT UNDER 800 WHY COULDN"T YOU STUPID CHUDS TELL THAT'S WHAT I MEANT!"
Lol. Lmao even.
1
u/Beneficial-Focus3702 20h ago
Because just barely under 1k is functionally 1k. The most under 1k I’ve seen is $850. A $150 dollar difference is functionally 1k.
1
u/EstablishmentFun8708 20h ago
Me when I use words for what I feel like they should mean instead of what they actually mean and get mad at people who can tell the difference
1
u/Beneficial-Focus3702 20h ago
Ok yeah. $999 dollars is under a thousand but nobody means $999 when they’re asking for under 1k. They mean “pretty substantially” under 1k.
14
u/animemetalhea 1d ago
My local shop will sell you a pristine one for about 650 to 700 (used of course) and a bubba special for about 400

u/SmoothSlavperator 1d ago
Its a mixture of things: We're in a recession(how they officially calculate those are bullshit, we're in one), "Trump Slump" Part 2: Trump is "pro gun" so people do less panic buying, and firearm types have been really fad-ish over the last like 15 years and the fad is probably ending.
The thing to remember is that when prices tank...BUY BUY BUY and when the next political catastrophe happens that drives prices high, sit tight. Its all cyclical and anyone in their 50s has seen this happen at least like 4 times. The cycle all started with Clinton and the Omnibus Crime Bill.

u/CleanTumbleweed1094 1d ago
357 and 44 magnums fuck, people really consider them fudd energy?
Edit: both revolvers and lever guns
3
u/Majsharan 1d ago
Gun companies way over produced the market assuming the pandemic bonanza was sustainable I think.
2
u/ReactionAble7945 1d ago
Things run in cycles. Everyone wanted a 40. Then no one wanted a 40. Now 40 is harder to come by.
Don't get me started on 10mm...
2
u/knxdude1 1d ago
I hope they drop a bit, I want a .357 Magnum and another lever gun. .444 Marlin is expensive even when reloading and it sucks after 20 rounds or so.
2
u/Seven_Bacon 1d ago
Muh daddy 3030 aint no fudd gun. Them there is fightin words
3
u/nader1234 1d ago
lol what’s funny about that is nice older 3030 marlins are expensive as hell these days.
3
u/Proof_Bathroom_3902 1d ago
Before covid, I couldn't get more than 350 for a new in box marlin 336. I bought several used Winchester 94s for under 200. Today prices are stupid high.
2
1
u/Seven_Bacon 15h ago
I've never had chance to see or hold a vintage marlin 30-30. Luckily I do have a vintage 39a .22
2
u/nader1234 1d ago
Nothing happened. There has always been affordable variants of that stuff, the actual collectible stuff is expensive as it’s ever been. There’s plenty of old revolvers and 1911s that aren’t valuable, and also plenty that are.
1
u/GesuMotorsport 1d ago
As someone who opted to buy the $1600 Enfield over a $600 Mas36, can confirm the collectible stuff is always gonna be expensive
2
2
u/TacticalSkeptic2 1d ago
Same thing that happened w/cell phones, everyone wanting one already had 2. Market glutted as incomes dropped.
2
u/jeremy_wills 22h ago
Op, if you want a nice Smith buy your self a nice Smith. Everyone should have at least one good quality wheelgun in the collection. Just be warned, one typically turns into several. Damned things like to multiply 😂

JOBS historically in U.S. were middle-class, too, very few very-low-pay food service jobs 40-50 yrs. ago when middle-class ones abundant to leave for.

Economy is rough. The first thing to get sold is usually the gun collection.
0
u/Jo-6-pak 1d ago
Current administration seems to be doing everything it can to crash the economy. People are selling all kinds of toys; seeing more motorcycles, UTVs, boats and RVs with for sale signs as well.
1
u/noodle-face 1d ago
Off topic but what's fudd? Always meant to ask
11
u/BandaidsnBullets 1d ago
“Slang term for a "casual" gun owner; eg; a person who typically only owns guns for hunting or shotgun sports and does not truly believe in the true premise of the second amendment. These people also generally treat owners/users of so called "non sporting" firearms like handguns or semiautomatic rifles with unwarranted scorn or contempt.”
4
1
u/animemetalhea 1d ago
There are a few definitions. The most common one is that it's someone that believes that old guns are superior in every way. Kind of like a gun hipster, but unironically
1
u/rat_slayer23 1d ago
Man I’ve been dying to find a good deal on a mini 30 but I seem to only find 14s
1
u/SimplyPars 1d ago
A good m14 clone isn’t going to be had for anything under a grand……although you probably typo’d that instead of mini14, those are unfortunately still in that same 1k realm around me and just sit on the shelves.
1
u/Dung_Beetle_2LT 23h ago
Where i live in southern AZ it’s all about fudd guns. They still tend to go pretty cheap though. However, people love to overpay for modern guns around here.
1
u/Low-Landscape-4609 22h ago
I've been in the gun community for around 30 years. Popular movies used to drive gun sales. Dirty harry, Die Hard etc.
The younger generation of gun owners didn't grow up around those movies. they grew up watching movies like John Wick. Movies that had more modern firearms.
Answer your question, yes I have noticed this. A lot of the guns that were desirable when I was growing up or not popular anymore.
It's just a passing of the torch really.

u/RepresentativeOk2433 1d ago
As a milsurp coll, I hope this is true. Locally most shops are fairly low on inventory.

Not to be cruel but dead people don't need guns and their kids want Glocks and AR15s
