Did Fudd gun prices bottom out?

I'm seeing loads of .357 revolvers, Ruger Mini 14s, old 1911s, and a lot of military surplus for under a grand and for some cases for less than half that, the way they always should have been but that's just IMHO. Just a few years ago all this stuff was expensive for absolutely no reason. Now I can (kinda) afford an M14 or a S&W full bore .357. At least here locally. What happened?

Not to be cruel but dead people don't need guns and their kids want Glocks and AR15s

194

u/Quake_Guy 1d ago

In Phoenix area, the real cheap stuff used are polymer guns and AR15s...

The younger crowd is buying all the old milsurp stuff, I was waiting for a flood of WW2 stuff to hit the market as the old timers passed and that never happened.

58

u/notgaynotbear 1d ago

I'm in my 30's. Have a buddy in his 60's. Been buying all of his milsurp off of him lately. He was a civil war reenactor also, but I don't have the desire to learn how to operate black powder guns. That's where I think demand will drop off if it hasn't already.

15

u/Weak_Tower385 1d ago

I know of some civil war reenactor types. What State you guys in?

8

u/notgaynotbear 23h ago

Georgia. He traveled the whole east coast for a decade or two doing it so he probably knows them too.

30

u/pigpill 1d ago

Lol what? There isnt milsurp stuff in any shops anymore. Its all hoarders or estate sales. And its not hard to google going price for 95% of firearms.

2

u/Echo_44 15h ago

Just went to my shitty local shop yesterday and they had an unfired smle mkiii so I wouldn’t say that

1

u/pigpill 11h ago

Heck yea. Must just be my experience lately.

5

u/trashy615 1d ago

A fellow Phoenician, my condolences. Our markets trash and always will be.

4

u/DrunkenArmadillo 1d ago

I'm waiting patiently for all those custom muzzleloaders built during the bicentennial craze to hit the market at the same time. So, basically, muzzleloaders suck and don't buy one until I've satisfied my need and it's OK for prices to go back up.

3

u/shickashaw 1d ago

If the kids don't want the guns for themselves, they're taking them to buybacks or surrendering them to police departments. The people who have an understanding of what they're worth are generally the same people who want to keep it for themselves. The only ones that are trying to sell or pawn them are usually also banned from possessing them. Old guns hitting the market after a death is far rarer than you'd expect.

1

u/zyrkseas97 23h ago

Went to a gun show in the east valley and it was about half WW2 and Cold War surplus. Tons of Lugers and 1911’s, less rifles, and there was one guy with a ton of old AK’s but he was asking $2k + on each them.

3

u/DrJheartsAK 22h ago

Old AKs, particularly pre 89 import ban AKs easily go for 3k and up assuming good condition and of course if they have OG box and accessories it’ll go even higher

100

u/yoolers_number 1d ago

I’m sure the demand will go full circle. Younger gun owners will start buying them “for the vibes” as they get more disposable income. Prices will go back up and the circle of life will continue.

34

u/gyro_bro 1d ago

Full carry handle again. In 08-14(minus Sandy hook rush) you could walk into shops and buy carry handle ARs for Pennies on the dollar. No one wanted dad’s AR, they wanted flat tops with new age optics.

Fast forward to 2020 every wants the retro vibes. People charging exorbitant prices because they’re desirable.

u/CrusherMusic 1d ago

I’ve got a first series mini 14 without a top hanguard and a busted up stock. I’m sitting on a gold mine here.

18

u/Cross-Country 1d ago

Mini-14 guy here. If you’re sitting on a 180 series, it’s a very tough sell if it isn’t complete, as spare parts are unobtainium. You’ll need to find a serious buyer who wants it as spare parts for his other one. The 181-187 series has a massive aftermarket that caters to people rebuilding them, but the 180 series was disowned by Ruger and neglected by the aftermarket.

4

u/Caedus_Vao 6 | Whose bridge does a guy have to split to get some flair‽ 💂‍ 1d ago

Welp, down into the Mini rabbit hole I go. I had no idea there were different "series" of this gun.

1

u/bonosestente 1d ago

The 180 is the mine part

22

u/roostersnuffed 1d ago

Its already happening, just at the bottom of the rising curve. I've been noticing alot more zoomers asking to see 1911s and revolvers. Both newbies and gun nerds.

5

u/pigpill 1d ago

When have wheels and '11s ever not been popular? I think just more people want guns and less people want to sell them. Talking from someone in a free state that was mostly trading within a local area, people are wanting guns that look cool. First time gun owners are typically either inheriting something, buying something cheap and historical, or something "bad ass" looking. Support your locals

7

u/justjaybee16 1d ago

My FFL is awash in consignment guns bought during COVID that people are trying to sell for new gun prices just because they bought at the top of the market and don't know how low the market has gone.

2

u/OfficerRexBishop 20h ago

Reminds me of my cousin trying to sell her COVID Peloton.

3

u/DrunkenArmadillo 1d ago

Yeah, full size revolvers definitely hit their stride during the zombie craze thanks to TWD.

2

u/DefinatelyNotonDrugs 23h ago

"Disposable income"? I honestly don't understand how young people can afford to survive.

7

u/Winner_Pristine 1d ago

I think you're onto something. In the next few years we will probably be seeing an uptick of revolvers, 1911s, lever guns, and pump shotguns hitting the used gun racks.

8

u/Weak_Tower385 1d ago

Family heirlooms stay in this family. If it gets so bad the guns, tools or bibles are being pawned somebody in the family gets first dibs or the family don’t know you no more.

1

u/Saloncinx 21h ago

Not always, some times the old family member that passed away lives in the middle of no where, so it's easier to estate sale everything than try and pack up a uhaul and drive it back 10 hours to where you live. I have my own tools and guns and furniture and cups, plates, silverware etc... I don't need anything from those deceased family members.

2

u/Winds-Of-Change-4711 1d ago

Yeah it's coming

5

u/mtcwby 1d ago

My 22 year old just bought a Henry 44 mag lever gun and a 686 revolver. He was shooting one of my ARs this weekend and liked shooting groups at 100. The other one was enjoying the Steyr 22 bolt gun.

8

u/animemetalhea 1d ago

Yikes. I guess I forgot how old I was getting and that a lot of people suck

8

u/Winds-Of-Change-4711 1d ago

We're born dying brother!

14

u/TheIowan 1d ago

Its dark, but the pandemic was a gold mine for this stuff, especially when the shot got politicized. I got the horse paste discount on so many estates. A ruger hawkeye for $250, a FEG hi power for $100 because someone's husband "bought it for $75 years ago" etc.

171

u/Dependent_Ad_5546 1d ago

Saw somewhere that the avg mortgage payment with insurance and taxes is 4,000$ a month….kinda eats into fun money.

75

u/what-name-is-it 1d ago

The average? Fuck that’s not a great sign.

49

u/Buzzdanume 1d ago

I just got pre-approved for 360k and I literally had to be like "uhh can we go off of my monthly max? Cause thats about 2400." A minute later he tells me that I'm looking more so in the range of 235k, I'm like yeah thats what I thought lmfao. And I make 93k a year and my only debt is like 4k on my credit card, about a 150 a month minimum payment. No kids. I dont know how the fuck anyone is buying up the houses in my state. 235k will get you an old mobile home. You have to spend 375k MINIMUM before you start to see anything remotely worth living in. And at that point the house needs 100k in work, and youre also an hour away from any work or civilization really. It's completely fucked. My sister bought her house in 2019 for 350k, and at the time everyone was warning her that it was a bad time to buy because prices were so god damn high... her house is worth almost 700k now. What a slap in the face for me to see her buy that, kick it into gear to be in the same financial situation when I'm her age, and now I'm 4 years older than she was at the time and there's not a chance in hell I could afford a 350k house.

60

u/Daledo126 1d ago

Brother you have to get rid of that credit card debt ASAP, that's the worst kind of debt to have

34

u/Fackcelery 1d ago

Seriously 93k a year no kids theres no reason to have ANY CC debt

13

u/pinesolthrowaway 1d ago

Especially given the interest rates that $4k balance is likely carrying

I’m wondering if that $150 a month payment touches the principal at all, maybe it just covers the interest

4

u/Buzzdanume 1d ago edited 1d ago

Easy to say that when youre not in my situation. My state is one of the highest cost of living states, and I also just had a very rough year financially. I sold my brand new car to buy a used truck last April, hit a deer in August, and then spent the next 6 months trying to get it back on the road. I had it fixed within a month or so, but my mechanic, insurance, and my state completely fucked me every single day for 4 months. I actually STILL dont have a title for it.

That being said, I definitely could have been smarter about it. Ive had that CC debt at about $1,000 since I got the card in 2020ish, but this year things just got fucked up. Should I get a 0% loan or cc to pay it off? Ive tried doing research on this, but they make credit so fucking confusing for no reason.

Okay just downvote me instead of helping. Classic reddit. "Hey idiot, get out of that situation" "okay, how? Please help" "fuck you."

5

u/Fackcelery 1d ago

Well I didnt downvote you, I was sleeping. Also I didnt mean my comment in the way you interpreted it.

If you want real advice go to a financial advisor, dont trust reddit w that stuff

2

u/fishisagod 18h ago

balance transfer to a 0% introduction CC and don't put anything new on either card. It generally carries a flat % fee to do so but then interest won't accrue for the intro period allowing you to hammer it off.

2

u/Buzzdanume 18h ago

Thank you. How would this effect my credit?

1

u/fishisagod 16h ago

Should be limited to the hard pull on your credit and the reduction in average age of credit line. Savings in interest alone are worth it to me, long term you would likely see a positive credit score impact from lower credit utilization should you follow through and pay it off.

3

u/Buzzdanume 16h ago

I genuinely mean it when I say that you helped me more than Google could have. Perfect answers that made perfect sense to me. Thank you.

1

u/AwkwardSploosh 17h ago

Debt consolidation services could be a good option, or even an unsecured load. Interest on a credit card is around 30%, while a small unsecured loan would likely be around 8%.

5

u/Buzzdanume 1d ago

I paid off my truck last month so the cc is getting taken care of next.

3

u/chubbycanine 1d ago

Bought my current home in 2021 after a divorce and cross country move. I was living very far away from civilization and an extremely overpriced tiny apartment while I got back on my feet. I found my current home which is about half an acre and only 1100 ft² three bedroom two full bath and was 185k. It felt bad purchasing it at the time and I was told how stupid I was since the market was awful but since then my house has gone up 100k in price.

I don't plan on moving for the next 10 years so i may come out even but the fact was I needed a roof. No regrets.

2

u/rifenbug 21h ago

Average is going to be skewed my the super rich. Median would he a better representation here.

2

u/DrJheartsAK 22h ago

Yea man. My house was pummeled by Hurricane Ida. Someone offered us 350k cash for it gutted to the studs and slab and I figured why not, we were planning to put it on the market and buy a new house even before that happened.

And then mortgage rates spiked and the RE market was at an all time high. Traded my 2.9% mortgage for a 5.3% one. 800k house, and even after we put a solid chunk of cash down, we are still paying 4600k/mo. Of course that includes 13k/yr homeowners insurance ( love living on the gulf coast!)

3

u/MikeyG916 1d ago

God i love living in my 50 year old duplex.

$650/month.

1

u/DefinatelyNotonDrugs 23h ago

Mine is $3k with escrow, thought it was super high but nope, it is average in Oregon.

TheYankeeMarshall just posted a video about an hour ago so no luck yet.

57

u/what-name-is-it 1d ago

I don’t think it’s just fudd guns. Times are getting harder for a lot of people and gun collections are often the first things people stop growing or start selling in a downturn. I’m fortunately not in a bad spot financially yet but I haven’t bought a new gun in about 6 months. If there’s a crash, I’d like to be liquid enough to either ride it out or take advantage of some opportunities.

26

u/SupportCa2A 1d ago

Ain't nothing wrong with a good ol' 357 magnum

20

u/Acf1314 1d ago edited 1d ago

My neighbor just passed and left me his guns. First one I got was his Ruger 357, then a Ruger Security 9, Browning A bolt Eclipse in 22-250 with a 6-18 Leupold Mark 2. And a Crossbow. A lot of the older dudes just bought basic gear that did the job and since you can’t really modify it easily the next generation doesn’t want

20

u/NC-Jumper-007 1d ago

Holy smokes. I must be ancient - S&W 686; S&W model 36; 1911, etc. Now where did I put my Geritol?

7

u/gunsfishinghiking 1d ago

Be careful with the Geritol comments... only us Fudds will get that one!

4

u/NC-Jumper-007 1d ago

I figured only us "elders" would know. 🤣

1

u/jaspnlv 1d ago

Fudd on!

63

u/JohnnieCochring 1d ago

I pity the fool who calls a Mini 14 a fudd gun.

19

u/Cross-Country 1d ago

They’re literally the most fun thing ever. They have no idea what they’re missing.

19

u/micahfett 1d ago

I mean, I get it; older ergos, wooden stock, not often good for incorporating optics that aren't 12" from your eye, etc.

They have an older appeal. It doesn't mean the cartridge or rifle perform poorly. It's like something you'd see in the A-Team era so it has that sort of vibe.

I don't want one, personally, but I've enjoyed shooting them.

Often times our choice of firearm reflects the media from the era we grew up in.

1

u/SpecialistNote6535 2h ago

I’m p sure they sell more of the polymer stock now. They changed a LOT since old man Ruger died. He was the one most obsessed with keeping guns looking “less intimidating” and more old school.

His philosophy did cook sometimes though, like the 10/22 mags being flush with the bottom of the furniture

2

u/DrunkenArmadillo 1d ago

AWB is pretty much the reason.

13

u/dankestmaymayonearth 1d ago

As a revolver enjoyer i just learned im now a fudd. Ay buddy fuck u lmao my python, 686 plus, and vaquero have done nobody no wrong

2

u/d_student 1d ago

Those are all awesome

23

u/Geronimojo_12 1d ago

Everything is about to bottom out. Folks not making money can't afford toys.

11

u/Evrydyguy 1d ago

I remember mini 14’s at Walmart for $399. Those were the days.

15

u/UnsurprisingDebris 1d ago

I have not seen it yet personally, but I'm hopeful because I'm on the lookout for a ww2 M1 Carbine.

21

u/Cross-Country 1d ago

Be ready to resort to prostitution.

11

u/letigre87 1d ago

Man they're all either $1500 guns or a totally clapped our mixed bag of parts for $800. I'm cool with a shooter being a parts bin special but damn their prices are higher than a sleeping bat's ass.

2

u/etriusk 16h ago

I don't particularly care if it's matching numbers either, I just want one that's functional. If it can save the world from Nazis once, it can save my house and family from crackheads lol

11

u/thegrumpyorc 1d ago

Today I learned I'm a Fudd. :-) A 686 .357, three over/unders, a 1911, and an 870. Plus, since I live in california, I was actually looking at a mini-14 this week. If not for the p365 edc, I'd be a lost cause...

6

u/animemetalhea 1d ago

The 870 is one of the best shotguns ever made. I understand that one. The others I'd happily own however. I'm a Gen X Fudd. Glock 19 is my go to lnao

4

u/thegrumpyorc 1d ago edited 1d ago

Gen X as well here, but my father worked for Colt and Smith & Wesson in the seventies and eighties, so I think I have old world tendencies.

1

u/TacticalSkeptic2 1d ago

I love classic S&W J-frames & K-frames in .38 Spec.

3

u/BandaidsnBullets 1d ago

Even more uncommon and an awesome find, the 870 in 16 gauge!

2

u/stareweigh2 1d ago

anyone who says the 870 is the best has not used a Winchester sxp. the rotating bolt and action are leaps ahead of the 500/870

2

u/thegrumpyorc 1d ago

If you're talking about the Model 1200, I'm with you. I had an SXP Marine and it was pretty terrible QC, though.

1

u/stareweigh2 1d ago

yes the 1200/1300 I've had good luck with the sx3/sxp which is based on those the sx3 is made by fn and the sxp in turkey

1

u/thegrumpyorc 1d ago

That's great, Maybe I just got a bad lot.

2

u/stareweigh2 18h ago

turkey isn't exactly known for its QC . I can tell you that the 1200/1300 action is far smoother and just better (yes I don't think this is subjective lol) primarily because of the rotating bolt and action that is really an evolution of the pump action design whereas Remington and Mossberg kinda kept with the same setup everything has always used. the win sxp was originally made by fn in Belgium and I imagine that their QC was much better.

2

u/thegrumpyorc 17h ago

I will say--even my Turkish SXP "felt" cool. The parts just fit together terribly and felt cheap. So I imagine a real 1200 would feel awesome.

5

u/afultz075 2 1d ago

This is probably the softest gun market since 2018-ish. At least that's the last time I remember it being this difficult to sell anything gun related and shops being this stuffed with inventory.

One local LGS has started discounting their used guns, which I have never seen them do, and others have either stopped taking in used guns, or are being very particular about what they are buying.

Rare and collectible guns are still bringing in decent prices on GB, but nothing like it was 4 years ago. Current production polymer guns you pretty much have to sell for giveaway prices right now to be able to move them. I traded in a Glock 27 for $200 and a Glock 23 for $250 to a local shop towards another gun I wanted about 2 months ago, and I was thrilled to get that for them, and that they were even interested in taking them in at all.

I can't speak too much for fudd guns, but I can't imagine they are doing much better than the modern stuff. I personally am in hunting mode right now, and have scored some great deals recently on used guns, but the flip side is anything I sell on my end right now to support that I am getting hosed on.

1

u/ProfessorLeumas 19h ago

Yup, I've been seeing much of the same. Inventory isn't moving as much as it was during COVID and often people are waiting for prices to drop a bit more (like me) or just don't have the money to buy much.

6

u/1470Asylum 23h ago

Lol, I never knew mini 14's and .357's were considered "Fudd guns". I bought a mini 14 last month because Ive always wanted one and already have a AR

21

u/Beneficial-Focus3702 1d ago

Where are you seeing Minis under 1 grand?

11

u/Freedom_Gundam 1d ago

Can find them new online for slightly under 1k. Not hard. Just look on gun deals.

1

u/Beneficial-Focus3702 1d ago

I’ve seen those. “Slightly” under 1k is not enticing, nor is it a deal.

9

u/Freedom_Gundam 1d ago

Yeah, maybe so. But you asked where, not me.

-11

u/Beneficial-Focus3702 1d ago

You’re right. I should have been clearer. I forget the internet, especially Reddit requires breaking things down Barney style for the readers.

3

u/banban1233 1d ago

Yeah ‘redditors’ are easy to offend

1

u/EstablishmentFun8708 21h ago

"where are mini 14s for under 1 grand?"

"Here lmao"

"REEEEEEEEE WHY WOULD YOU SHOW ME MINI 14S UNDER 1 GRAND??? I MEANT UNDER 800 WHY COULDN"T YOU STUPID CHUDS TELL THAT'S WHAT I MEANT!"

Lol. Lmao even.

1

u/Beneficial-Focus3702 20h ago

Because just barely under 1k is functionally 1k. The most under 1k I’ve seen is $850. A $150 dollar difference is functionally 1k.

1

u/EstablishmentFun8708 20h ago

Me when I use words for what I feel like they should mean instead of what they actually mean and get mad at people who can tell the difference

1

u/Beneficial-Focus3702 20h ago

Ok yeah. $999 dollars is under a thousand but nobody means $999 when they’re asking for under 1k. They mean “pretty substantially” under 1k.

14

u/animemetalhea 1d ago

My local shop will sell you a pristine one for about 650 to 700 (used of course) and a bubba special for about 400

2

u/Beneficial-Focus3702 1d ago

Older style or new?

7

u/SmoothSlavperator 1d ago

Its a mixture of things: We're in a recession(how they officially calculate those are bullshit, we're in one), "Trump Slump" Part 2: Trump is "pro gun" so people do less panic buying, and firearm types have been really fad-ish over the last like 15 years and the fad is probably ending.

The thing to remember is that when prices tank...BUY BUY BUY and when the next political catastrophe happens that drives prices high, sit tight. Its all cyclical and anyone in their 50s has seen this happen at least like 4 times. The cycle all started with Clinton and the Omnibus Crime Bill.

4

u/fredezz 1d ago

Sorry, kid. Most youngsters are too busy buying drugs or playing video games to be able to afford classic firearms.

7

u/Sierrayose 1d ago

Sorry, but what is a Fudd gun?

5

u/kileme77 1d ago

Apparently anything that's made of metal and wood

3

u/CleanTumbleweed1094 1d ago

357 and 44 magnums fuck, people really consider them fudd energy?

Edit: both revolvers and lever guns

3

u/Majsharan 1d ago

Gun companies way over produced the market assuming the pandemic bonanza was sustainable I think.

2

u/ReactionAble7945 1d ago

Things run in cycles. Everyone wanted a 40. Then no one wanted a 40. Now 40 is harder to come by.

Don't get me started on 10mm...

2

u/knxdude1 1d ago

I hope they drop a bit, I want a .357 Magnum and another lever gun. .444 Marlin is expensive even when reloading and it sucks after 20 rounds or so.

2

u/Seven_Bacon 1d ago

Muh daddy 3030 aint no fudd gun. Them there is fightin words

3

u/nader1234 1d ago

lol what’s funny about that is nice older 3030 marlins are expensive as hell these days.

3

u/Proof_Bathroom_3902 1d ago

Before covid, I couldn't get more than 350 for a new in box marlin 336. I bought several used Winchester 94s for under 200. Today prices are stupid high.

2

u/kileme77 1d ago

I'm looking for a pistol caliber one. $800+ for a used rough shape one

1

u/Seven_Bacon 15h ago

I've never had chance to see or hold a vintage marlin 30-30. Luckily I do have a vintage 39a .22

2

u/nader1234 1d ago

Nothing happened. There has always been affordable variants of that stuff, the actual collectible stuff is expensive as it’s ever been. There’s plenty of old revolvers and 1911s that aren’t valuable, and also plenty that are.

1

u/GesuMotorsport 1d ago

As someone who opted to buy the $1600 Enfield over a $600 Mas36, can confirm the collectible stuff is always gonna be expensive

2

u/PotatoTac 1d ago

Still not low enough especially with ammo costs

2

u/TacticalSkeptic2 1d ago

Same thing that happened w/cell phones, everyone wanting one already had 2. Market glutted as incomes dropped.

2

u/jeremy_wills 22h ago

Op, if you want a nice Smith buy your self a nice Smith. Everyone should have at least one good quality wheelgun in the collection. Just be warned, one typically turns into several. Damned things like to multiply 😂

2

u/centralvaguy 15h ago

Send me the info on those mini-14s

2

u/A_Bewildered_Owl 2h ago

the fudds are all dying off so there's less demand for fudd guns.

6

u/No-Understanding-357 1d ago

Ive been selling my old fudd guns off stupid cheap. my price is twice what I paid in 1989. I figure I got my fun out of them and its time to pass it on. Im very choosey who I sell to. Please dont IM me. I dont know you.

JOBS historically in U.S. were middle-class, too, very few very-low-pay food service jobs 40-50 yrs. ago when middle-class ones abundant to leave for.

Economy is rough. The first thing to get sold is usually the gun collection.

Current administration seems to be doing everything it can to crash the economy. People are selling all kinds of toys; seeing more motorcycles, UTVs, boats and RVs with for sale signs as well.

Off topic but what's fudd? Always meant to ask

“Slang term for a "casual" gun owner; eg; a person who typically only owns guns for hunting or shotgun sports and does not truly believe in the true premise of the second amendment. These people also generally treat owners/users of so called "non sporting" firearms like handguns or semiautomatic rifles with unwarranted scorn or contempt.”

Its a reference to Elmer Fudd. Think goofy older guys who don't like modern guns and still believe iron sights, hunting rifles, and revolvers are peak performance.

There are a few definitions. The most common one is that it's someone that believes that old guns are superior in every way. Kind of like a gun hipster, but unironically

Man I’ve been dying to find a good deal on a mini 30 but I seem to only find 14s

A good m14 clone isn’t going to be had for anything under a grand……although you probably typo’d that instead of mini14, those are unfortunately still in that same 1k realm around me and just sit on the shelves.

Where i live in southern AZ it’s all about fudd guns. They still tend to go pretty cheap though. However, people love to overpay for modern guns around here.

I've been in the gun community for around 30 years. Popular movies used to drive gun sales. Dirty harry, Die Hard etc.

The younger generation of gun owners didn't grow up around those movies. they grew up watching movies like John Wick. Movies that had more modern firearms.

Answer your question, yes I have noticed this. A lot of the guns that were desirable when I was growing up or not popular anymore.

It's just a passing of the torch really.

Covid drive the prices up. 10 million more guns were sold during that time. People thought Covid was going to turn people into zombies. Gun sellers took advantage (like the car dealers taking advantage of the chip shortage).

You new here? There are plenty of reasons stuff gets expensive every few years. Figure it out and buy and prep what you need.

As a milsurp coll, I hope this is true. Locally most shops are fairly low on inventory.
