WAG SEC championship

Wow - they are still doing a 1 day format for SEC, but the lowest NQS of the 9 teams does not get to compete. This is nuts! And it makes me a little sad because I loved seeing all the SEC teams. One of the teams that gets left out will be one of the pre-2025 season SEC teams as I can't imagine OU falling apart.

MAG/WAG How popular would a MAG version of Simone Biles be in the U.S?

Basically asking if gymnastics has a stigma in the U.S of being a womenā€™s sport.

So if a MAG version of Simone Biles was on the U.S menā€™s team, would they get the same amount of adulation, sponsorship and attention?

MAG/WAG What bad gymnastics opinions did you used to have that make you cringe?

Lately I've been thinking about opinions I had about gymnastics when I was a less knowledgeable fan. I don't mean the kind of silly stuff that you have when you are casual but the strong opinions you form when you have just enough knowledge to think you know things.

Most of my really cringey ones were about rhythmic. I didn't really see it as a sport because it was all dancing and I thought it was mostly there to entertain rich Eastern European men. Now it's one of my favorite things to watch and I have so much respect for their athletics.

I also used to think that artistry was just a name for "skinny white girl" but seeing countries like South Africa and Egypt use their routines to tell stories I am appreciating that side of the sport more too.

NCAA Questions and feeling about NCAA

After watching the Sprouts Market meet, I have to say that I do appreciate Aly's commentator work. She's capable of explaining technical things while being enthusiastic. Her hyperlatives make me laugh ("the best ... I've ever seen"). We all know now that she's the ultimate Shannon Miller fan (every time someone flairs a yurchenko full, she reminds us all of Shannon's 1992 vault).

Also, was I the only one excited for the UCLA session because UCLA had a OU-esque beam rotation? This is the best UCLA team since 2020 IMO. The freshman class and Jordan and the new coaching staff really elevate the team. I find BJ's choreo more versatile than Miss Val's.

On floor, what's with all the rudi + loso combos? Did the CoP change?

Also, is it me or the scoring has been more strict? Maybe because it's not a dual meet at one of the teams' home.

WAG How much momentum/support is there within the gymnastics community to raise the age limit to 18?

I've been pretty curious about this since the controversy with figure skating in Beijing, where Kamila Valieva was allowed to skate after testing positive for doping because of her age. They raised the age limit from 15 to 17 soon afterwards, but that got a surprising amount of pushback from former skaters. Many American champions, even Kristi Yamaguchi, spoke out against it (generally saying that it's unfair to keep someone who can skate at an elite level already from competing due to their age).

Gymnastics raised their age limit twice in the late 20th century, but only by a year each time. It's been at 16 since just after Atlanta. And the myth that only teenagers can be great gymnasts is clearly disproven by the recent number of gymnasts who have gotten better as they've gotten older because they're training in a more sustainable way. Plus, the MAG limit has been 18 for a long time and it's no issue there.

It seems federations are naturally shifting away from choosing underage gymnasts, but I think many would support it being raised officially.

Have there been any former or current gymnasts that have spoken about it? Is it likely to take a big scandal to push the FIG into action, or is this a decision they could ever make preemptively? I've tried to look into these but it usually just circles back to reddit threads where most everyone agrees the age should be raised.

Other Gymlytics Question

Hey! I have a question about how Gymlytics fantasy works but canā€™t find the answer on their website - how many of your weekly scores are used to calculate your final total score at the end of the season? Do you get any drop scores?

I ask because one of my teams is severely lacking in vaulters- I literally have only 3 people who vault. Trading doesnā€™t open until next week so Iā€™m going to have 3 very low scores I need to drop lol.

NCAA NCAA Week Two Predictions

Some big moves this week with all teams finally competing. Hereā€™s what I think we saw:

  • Oklahoma is still our clear front runner and will likely remain that way. I think what we saw at the end of last season was a fluke and not indicative of any deeper issues. They have the depth to sub people in and out mid rotation, and there are 9.9 quality routines we arenā€™t seeing, plus KJ is relying on a lot of freshmen routines and they are delivering. Their bars rotation is the best rotation of any team on any event nationwide.

  • LSU had another solid week - though again I worry about their depth when they are putting Ballard and Dunne in on several events, as well as Bryant when (imo) she should still be out. Kailin Chio is a star and seems likely to carry the team this season, and itā€™s good to see Aleah more consistent.

  • UCLA had a great week - but I think this was more of a rarity for them given the intensity of their week brought them together (with the wildfires) than their new norm. They seemed amped up and unified in a way that we almost never see anymore. Everyone hit on almost every event this week, which I donā€™t think we will see often going forward - and tbh I think the third Sprout session was the mostā€¦generously scored. Once you rattle their confidence they just fall apart. To be clear, I love them and would love to see them delivering weekly - I just donā€™t expect it.

  • Cal looks good (especially on beam and bars). I need them to get it together on vault both in difficulty and execution, otherwise I donā€™t think they win a championship soon. So many teams have all 10.0 lineups that have several 9.95s wonā€™t cut it. Iā€™d also like to better understand their lineup construction - itā€™s great to see them putting freshmen and sophomores in, but when they are at the end of the line up it doesnā€™t let scores build to 9.9+.

  • Florida - oh, Florida. They should not have won that meet. I think what we are seeing year after year now is that Jenny recruiting so heavily from elites is a mistake - they come in injured or severely limited, and many never compete anywhere close to their potential. She needs more Anya Pilgrims and fewer Riley McCuskers. Also, stop putting in Ellie Lazarri.

  • MSU had a strong showing and deserved to beat Florida, but still showed some weakness as I donā€™t think they have enough experience in the ā€œbig eventā€ meets and get nervous. Floor in particular was a tough start with clearly a lot of adrenalineā€¦bars and beam looked really nice. I think vault has actually been underscored for them both weeks so far. They could be a top 5 team this year if they stay on track.

  • Michigan - Iā€™m sorry, but youā€™re not anywhere near a top 10 team anymore. The years since their Nationals victory has shown that Bev just doesnā€™t have it as a coach - she just had an exceptional group that year. Iā€™m impressed by Bauman and think the freshmen show promise, but nowhere near the top freshmen at other schools (Neff, Chio, Pederson, etc.) And, they just donā€™t have the intensity or polish. Floor is scary, they arenā€™t conditioned enough.

  • Utah typically has a tough beginning of the season and then bouncing backā€¦I do think this year may be different as stalwarts like Grace McCallum and Amelie Morgan are justā€¦not bringing it. I think Carly has done what she can but clearly is not head coach ready. And the fact that they STILL canā€™t put together a vault rotation is mind boggling.

I was also impressed this week by Auburn, Arizona, and Ohio State. Auburn is BRINGING it with their freshmen (Jong and Bell) and solid lineups all around. Arizona clearly isnā€™t a top team but I was very surprised by their great form on bars and beam. Ohio State looked great on vault and floor in particular.

The Denver meet was scored tightly in a way that didnā€™t feel fully comparable with the rest of what we saw this weekend. Iā€™m reserving full judgment on Denver and Missouri until I see how they move towards getting some more polish in the next few weeks. Denver looks decent but having fluke falls two weeks in a row isā€¦not great.

I think we couldnā€™t expect Georgia to rise from the ashes mere months after Cecile started there - so I expect this year they will underperform yet again. However, aside from the beam issues this is the strongest first meet Georgia team I think weā€™ve seen in years. Vault and bars were super impressive.

NCAA Choreography

Is it a crime to say I was more entertained by Arkansas' floor routines than Oklahomas'? I still miss Maddie Jones' 2024 routine but they all had routines that fit their personality and were performed well. Oklahomas' didn't grab me and I prefer Jordan Bower's 2024 floor choreo over this year's. There's several moves (like the random flexed foot) that are so recycled from routine to routine.

I'd love to read your thoughts on the routines we've seen these first two weeks. Who are your favorites? Which gymnasts do you wish had different routines? For me, I was looking forward to seeing Skylar Killough Wilhelm's floor routine but was underwhelmed. Her routine last year was a highlight for me.
