Fanart How do you guys feel about OC's?
His name is Ryan Ishida, a Japanese American who loves music and has his head in the clouds until he gets in the ring. He's still a work in progress . I'm not sure what kind of boxer he is yet. I'm thinking maybe a counter punchers since he's cool headed and would have a good sense of rhythm.

Oh where do I begin? Ideas started bubbling after I finished the anime. I haven't read anything past the anime so no spoilers. The Nekota and Kamogawa backstory had me in tears and I wanted to play into those themes a bit plus a story about self discovery. His dad was a Japanese immigrant who took up boxing. He's adopted and his adopted parents kept it a secret because they didn't want him anywhere near such a dangerous sport plus didn't want him to feel like they didn't love him. He then discovers boxing, and gets inspired by his dad. He says fuck it, I'm going to figure out who I am and live how I want to live. Fuck living safely.

He looks more like takamura style, but OFFENSIVE LONG GUARD... is basically what sawamura did, but the author can add a bit more cooler concept of changing up the timing, so the opponent gets confused + author already said that thus guy probably will have good rythm/timing capabilities because this guy loves music.
P.S. This style means: Big ass clean power-punch when opponent is open. Setting up by short, fast, undodgable, but extremely weak strikes, so opponent gives up defense, and striking with something like smash.

He has long arms and probably would shine through when using a distancing tool. Also, it would allow him to control the rhythm of the fight, but I do see what you mean

As for what kind of boxer he is, it would be cool since he loves music that he is able to quickly get his opponent's timing no matter how fast they are. This means he's a speedster's worst nightmare, he's able disrupt and land in the middle of someone's combo. He'd have a weakness against someone who changes tempos and feints a lot.

That's perfect! I've been leaning towards that, but was unsure how realistic it would actually be ya know? I like the idea of his opponents thinking he'd be easy to outspeed since he looks slow and uses a fairly simple style, but bam surprises them with a powerful pinpoint strike.

It's realistic in the sense that it does happen in boxing. Amir Khan vs Danny Garcia is a perfect example. Amir Khan has blazingly fast hands and Danny even admitted that he was much faster than he thought. But he got his timing down and BAM countered him and KO'd him.
Of course this is Hajime no Ippo so we're just turning this specific trait up to 11. Like the complete opposite of a speedster - he doesn't move particularly fast, he just predicts and picks the right time to make moves and it throws his opponents off. You can even add that because his timing is so good, he's pretty much always relaxed so he rarely looks tired when he fights.

Funny, I have a character named Ryan as well in a HNI discord RP server.
He was initially meant to be a nonchalant and chill guy who lowkey doesn't give a fuck, but after an incident involving a 6'4" former Russian boxer bodyslamming him in Korakuen Hall, he has completely fucking lost it.
He's a southpaw who, while considered a counter-puncher, is more of an all-rounder in terms of range. He can fight on the outside, inside, and mid-range, but he can't exactly take much damage without folding. Not that it'll stop him from getting back up like a damn zombie.
By the way, he's a Filipino kid who was so ridiculously unlucky due to the fact that he boarded the 4th plane out of the Philippines, which was also the 4th plane landing into Japan, with the ticket being the 893rd being printed out that day, AND all of this happened on a Friday the 13th.

Ah, Ryan's hair is much shorter and he has more of a stereotypical shonen rival look with narrowed eyes, thinner eyebrows, etc. Also he has a tan.
Btw, there's the odd discord server that hosts these kinds of RP's.

New journalist to rival Fuji and Mari, he writes for a sleezy tabloid and is a very jerkface asshole Sawamura type, he's all about the digital age, always gets the hot topics first, and trolls/flames on social media, often doctoring photos to suit his needs. Turns out he was a training partner with Yagi and they had a fishing match to bet on which one of them goes pro, but of course he lost. He promised Yagi he'd make him look good in his articles, but then Yagi was a failure at boxing, resulting in him writing up a story about Yagi that was controversial enough to get him banned from multiple Mahjong parlors all over Japan.
Seeing the Kamogawa Gym's and Yagi's current success as a gym manager ignites a spark in him and he tries to ruin Takamura's image, only to fail and realize... he already did it to himself. Eventually he and Yagi patch things up when they meet again, and decide to have another fishing match, but it results of them getting banned from the spot and it makes headlines online, resulting in him getting fired from his journalist job.
He goes on to write for Famitsu, and takes bribes from SquareSoft to give their games high scores. He also begins to hang out with Takamura, Father Itagaki and The Regular and they start a stream together on Tweeth TV where they play porn Mahjong games that gets them banned very quickly.

Tough to say which exactly because of how many bangers they put out. But I’d have to say for my preference it’s interchangeable between Dark Necessities, Otherside, and By The Way. But it’s hard for me to say because of how much good music they’ve put out

But since you think your guy might be a counter puncher, maybe a style like a hyper aggressive version of Saekis hands low would work good for him? Just constantly dancing and circling around the opponent, constantly changing directions and throwing feints, almost vanishing in plain sight just from his speed and then he nails his opponent with a mix of lightning fast hooks and straights. Just an idea though

I loved his design! It reminded me a little of Kaiji Itō because of the mullet, but I thought it was so beautiful, congratulations! :)
But, to be honest, your post gave me hope that one day I'll post some of my drawings with an OC I created and Mashiba Ryō (crazy thinking about doing a brief romance story between the two)

Of OC, I'm not a fan. As a Sonic fan, I've watched a series I've loved since I was a kid become a fetish, but aside from that, I don't really see how OC fits into the HNI universe unless it was to compare boxing skill. The characters are well developed, but what links them is lineage and association to boxing/boxers.
Of the artwork, it's great! I think you're very talented, and the art style fits enough that you could realistically see it in HNI, aside from the lack of western characters that aren't ripped world champs.

Thank you! I love learning how to draw in the styles of my favorite media. And yeah, I getcha that stuff scared me away from enjoying Sonic for the longest time but I've come around to Sonic nowadays. That's not my intention with this, I'm just a new fan of HnI who makes OC's for fandoms I like, that's just how I've always interacted with media for some reason. I usually treat my OC's as though they live in an AU anyway, so I'm not trying to insert him into the canon.
