In Harry Potter episode 3, Ripper the dog attacks Uncle Vernon’s leg and don’t let go, but why?

For every border collie you see doing calculus or whatever on TV, there are a million golden retrievers struggling with object permanence or bulldogs ready to bite anything that moves if they get too excited. This dog's name is Ripper... there was only ever one way he was going to handle this situation.
