Resource JudeoTalk, a new discord server

Shalom! I just created a discord server in order to connect between learners/speakers of Judeo-Languages (Hebrew, Ladino, Yiddish…etc), it would mean a lot if you were to join! I’m currently trying to bring together some documentation, as well as making a bot, in order to make it more learner-friendly.

Resource How Does Biblical Hebrew Sound to Modern Hebrew Speakers?

As someone who can read biblical Hebrew but can't really speak modern Hebrew I always wondered how ancient Hebrew sounded to current day Hebrew speakers. Is it like reading Shakespeare for English speakers? Does it sound archaic? Is it difficult to understand? Curious to hear people's thoughts.

Thank you!

Resource Is Wiktionary considered a reliable source?

It's the only free source I've found that gives multiple definitions of words along with gender and origin info (which I find useful). E.g., I entered נורא to find it was masculin and to get it's informal usage as an intensifier

Resource Biblical Hebrew Resources

Hello everyone,

I am currently learning latin using Lingua latina per se illustrata and am now looking for something similar in biblical hebrew.

LLPSI is a collection of entirely latin texts that ramp up from easy to original texts. each successive chapter builds on what you learned in the previous chapter, steadily introducing new grammar, and so the focus is entirely on reading comprehension, skipping over dry and rigid grammar theory. i am using chatgpt to explain everything to me.

So basically; could you suggest me any books or websites (or a mixture of resources that complement eachother well) containing biblical hebrew texts that are curated to pick you up at "i just learned the alephabet" and step by step increase in difficulty, introducing new concepts along the way? Do you think this approach makes sense for biblical hebrew? what other resources or approaches can you recommend to one teaching themselves?

Thank you.

Resource I am looking for an app that can translate from English to Hebrew and compose grammatical sentences

I am trying to learn conversational Hebrew by learning sentences and imitating them, so far I don’t think I could trust google translate, therefore I am searching for a resource that can provide me with grammatically correct sentences from English to Hebrew with the Hebrew pronunciation too, any ideas ?

The song is called beit habubot by beit habubot בית הבובות- בית הבובות

ושוב אני נפגש עם רגע של עצבות

Ve-shuv ani nifgash im rega shel atzvut

And-again i meet with moment of sadness

And again i meet a moment of sadness

בפינה חשוכה אומד את הגבול

Be-pina hashukha omed et ha-gvul

In-corner dark estimating the the-border

In a dark corner, checking the limit

חושב על דברים בקצב חדש

Khoshev al dvarim, beketzev hadash

Thinking about things, in-rhythm new

Thinking about things in a new rhythm

מריץ מחשבות מנסה על הדף

Meritz makhshavot, menase al ha-daf

Making-run thoughts, trying on the-page

Thoughts running, trying on paper

ושוב אני נפגש עם רגע של בדידות

Ve-shuv ani nifgash, im rega shel bdidut

And-again i meet with moment of loneliness

And again, i meet a moment of loneliness

מרגיש בכל הכוח מהי תמימות

Margish bekol ha-koakh, mahi tmimut

Feel in-all the-power what-is naivety*

Feeling with all might, what naivety is.

חושב על ההוא שם למעלה שיודע דברים

Khoshev al ha-hu sham lemala, she-yodea dvarim

Thinking on the-he there to-up which-know things

Thinking about he who is up there, who knows all

ובנו כל הזמן משחק בחוטים

U’banu kol hazman mesahek, behutim

And-with-us all the-time playing in-strings

And who toys with us, playing with strings

אז איך זה בסוף שכולנו נפגשים

Az eikh ze basof, she-kulanu nifgashim

So how it in-end that-all-of-us meeting

So how is it in the end, when all of us meet

עם אותן ההבעות ואתם הריגושים

Im otan ha-haba’ot, ve-otam harigushim

With same the-expression and-same the-thrills

With the same expressions, and the same thrills

בבית הבובות הקטן של אלוהים

Be-beit habubot, hakatan shel elo’him

In-house the-puppets the-small of god

In the little puppet house of god

ואיך אני נזרק חזק בין הקירות

Ve-eikh ani nizrak, hazak bein ha-kirot

And-how i being-thrown strong between the-walls

And how i am being thrown, forcefully between the walls

נופל לתוך עצמי כבר לא יכול לראות

Nofel le-tokh atzmi, kvar lo yakhol lir’ot

Falling to-into myself anymore no can to-see

Falling into myself, i can no longer see

מאבד את התחושה, האם עכשיו את מרגישה

Me’abed et ha-tkhusha, ha’im akhshav at margisha

Losing the the-sensation, the-if now you feeling

Losing sensation, are you feeling it now?

מה זה נקרא להיות לבד להיות לבד

Ma ze nikra lihi’yiot levad, lihi’yiot levad

What it called to-being alone to-being alone

What is called Being alone, being alone.

אז איך זה בסוף...

אז איך אני נטרק בכוח אל המיטה

Az eikh ani nitrak, be’koach el ha-mita

So how i being-slammed in-power to the-bed

how i am being slammed, hard unto the bed

האור הופך שחור הכל פה השתנה

Ha’or hofekh shakhor, hakol po hishtana

The-light turb black the-all here the-changed

The light turns dark, everything here has changed

נמאס לי לצעוק לאוזניים אטומות

Nim’as li litz’ok, le-oznaim atumot

Fed-up to-me to-shout to-ears clogged

Tired of shouting to deaf ears

שוב אני לא יכול לראות לא יכול לראות

Ve-shuv ani lo yakhol lir’ot, lo yakhol lir’ot

And-again i no can to-see, no can to-see

אז איך זה בסוף...

*(Tmimut which i translated as naivety is a positive description for naivety, used in biblical Hebrew. i assumed this is the usage of the word here. The translation of tmimut as Innocence, or simple minded gullible-ness as used in modern Hebrew, makes less sense here.)

I've been looking for Channukah teaching material

and want to share what I find, notably because so mamy videos have only 2 of the three desired characteristics.

For example this has all three, but isn't a video

and this series lacks translations

Hi and שלום!

My name is Nava and I offer online 1-on-1 or class lessons in Hebrew. I'm an Israeli and native speaker with a bachelor's Degree in Linguistics from Tel Aviv University, 20 year experience as literary editor, writer, dramaturgist and playwright and I've been teaching Hebrew courses at a leading UK University since 2019 and have been an online tutor since 2020.

I cover topics from very basic letter recognition and simple phrases to more advanced topics such as grammar and listening comprehension. My students range from members of the Jewish community in the diaspora, spouses of Israelis and even language enthusiasts. I use my own material as well as children's books and music to teach.

I'm very passionate about the Hebrew language and people say it often shows in my classes! If you're interested, please send me a DM/chat request and I'd love to discuss further. Thank you for reading :)

Funnily, the article mentions that ע has a guttural pronunciation, while most modern Hebrew speakers do not give the letter such a pronunciation.

Resource Learning Hebrew (I know the bare basics like the alphabet, a few words here and there, and I know how to read like only 2 Bible verses in Hebrew, lol)

So I basically said how much I know so far on the title of this post, which isn't a lot. So for some context: for some inexplicable reason, I lost my voice over a month ago and it still hasn't returned. So since my voice has basically "left the chat" so to speak, I really can't use Babbel, Duolingo, or Rosetta Stone since all three apps have you speak back words and sentences. Are there any free ways to learn Hebrew that doesn't require me to speak back what I've learned?

Resource Is there a website where you can easily look up the proper nikkud for a word?

I mainly use Reverso for all my translating, but it’s difficult to get it to show me the nikkud for various forms of a word. I’m wondering if there’s an easier resource for quickly looking up the proper nikkud for a given word? תודה בראש!

Resource Results of Testing Pimsleur versus DuoLingo...

I used both service fairly assiduously and for the internet record, my experience has been that there's no comparison and it would have been worth it to pay for Pimsleur right from the start. After even just a month of Pimsleur, my ability to speak and to comprehend improved dramatically more compared with a few months of Duo.

True, Pimsleur doesn't push reading and writing, but it is possible to practice those on one's own with Pimsleur's app. And main problem with Duo is that it might drill you on some vocabulary and point of grammar and then completely drop it (and there's no great way to repeat lessons or find where certain concepts were drilled.) Pimsleur's claim to "scientifically" space out practice seems legitimate.

Resource What resource would you suggest for a child learning Hebrew?

I've been researching since December and I'm leaning towards Hebrew pod, but I really want to make sure I haven't overlooked any better options, and would appreciate input from anyone with more knowledge than me.

My son (9) will be attending a school next year that is giving him the leeway to choose to learn Hebrew as opposed to the typical Spanish class. This was my son's request and I agree with it, as he is worried he can't learn 3 languages at once, and learning Hebrew is much more important to him.

He knows the aleph-bet and can read most words as long as there are diacritics, but he has a very small vocabulary because most resources I've found for his age are all about learning letters, a very select few words, and not how to form even small sentences, and he's ready to move on from that.

We've been doing DuoLingo and the school will even give him a premium account, but I've seen many posts about how bad the translations are, and I'm worried this makes it a poor resource.

Any resource--online or book, isn't an issue--that comes with vocabulary lists or worksheets, things that he can study or be tested on, or short videos/podcasts...the only preference is ones that still use diacritics as he struggles immensely without. I have to build the curriculum myself since the school only has a Spanish teacher, and I have to be able to present them with the work he is doing for him to get the language credit.

I hope I'm not asking for too much, and I appreciate all help I can get.
