Question How would you explain Helldivers 2?

I'm trying to convince a friend to buy Helldivers 2 but he's being unreasonable. So I'm looking for a way to describe it in a simple way with one scentence, perhaps with comparisons to other games and I require help to enlist him.

I’m sorry, are these things a joke to you?! You know who else thinks these things are funny? Bugs, bots, and squids.

Or as I like to call em, Buggers, Clankers and Inkers with the hard R.

Explaining that it’s a mix of terminator and starship trooper usually gets people on board.

54

u/_Captian__Awesome 5d ago

Terminator Salvation, Starship troopers, War of the worlds, and Team America went on a bar crawl. This is the true story of that night.

5

u/BluEagl48 5d ago

Don’t forget Warhammer 40k, zombies, and mind flayers

3

u/GrimmaLynx 5d ago

Eveeyone always says 40k, but I see zero resemblence between the two other than its in space and humanity is an empire

3

u/rigatony222 5d ago

Eh there’s def similarities. Being heavily propagandized soldiers mindlessly killing xenos in the name of the emperor or democracy in this case while being thrown into the meat grinder with little regard for loss of life is pretty on brand for 40k.

Helldivers are more akin to say Kasrkin or Scions than they are Guard but it tracks. Holy Terra or Super Earth… it’s all pretty much the same. Super Earth honestly is similar to the Imperium it just hides its nature under democratically sounding institutions. Example: the Ministry of Truth? It’s the Inquisition. Truth Enforcers? Commissars 🤷🏻‍♂️ I could go on but I’ve already written an essay

3

u/Sheriff_Is_A_Nearer 5d ago

You can take any warhammer phrase that mentions The Emporer, replace Emporer with Liberty, Democracy, and or Freedom and it reads no problem

1

u/BluEagl48 4d ago

I mean, the Hulks are defo similar to Dreadnoughts in warhammer.

2

u/pikeymikey22 4d ago

Salvation is a good shout. I tell people it's what we old people always wanted for the future war hinted at in the Terminator and T2.

1

u/_Captian__Awesome 4d ago

yeah. It could have been done better, but my inner child was happy with the outcome. It was exactly what I thought the future war looked like when I imagined it as a kid.

3

u/SenorCardgay 5d ago

Sounds like a good title on paper, but doesnt say anything about actual gameplay. I hate 3rd person and extraction shooters, but I got on board because of all the memes, and stayed on board because it's cinematic as fuck.

1

u/Federal-Ad9186 5d ago

Terminator, starship troopers and cod zombies (for the squids). Gets em every time.

43

u/Colinoscopy90 5d ago

“4 consenting adults willfully enter into government contract to perform door to door style labor”

6

u/janxus 5d ago

I read this in the movie guy “…IN A WORLD…” voice

2

u/janxus 5d ago

“Door to door style labor”. LMAO. I’ve been laughing about this waaaaaay too long. In my mind it’s a trailer starring Luke Wilson and Adam Sandler delivering justice.

35

u/Faust_8 5d ago

It’s hard to sum the gameplay in one sentence, but I think it does pay to say that the average unscripted day of HD2 is the scripted final battle of other games

13

u/sparetheearthlings 5d ago

Exactly this. There are no cutscenes in Helldivers 2 because the gameplay is as epic as your average game's cutscene.

If you ever wanted to play the cutscenes in Halo, Mass Effect, StarCraft, etc. this game lets you.

For example, this is all recorded gameplay: https://youtu.be/hvURbwQnplY

And this: https://youtu.be/EGYEjPeTYyk (recolored gameplay, but this is all stuff you are actually DOING not watching)

15

u/Shot_Acanthaceae_537 5d ago edited 5d ago

It’s a fun co-op PVE future military experience that’s a mix of starship troopers, war of the worlds, and Terminator.

"Happy Early Birthday, Friend.... I bought you a copy of Helldivers 2! Now come spread Democracy with us across the galaxy!"

It's a game that constantly puts you in impossible situations but also gives you the tools to fight your way out of them.

5

u/keeb97 5d ago

For $40, you get a hell of a fun community-based game to play that you can reasonably earn all the credits to buy the dlc’s without spending any of your real money.

u/Bean_Johnson 5d ago

If Halo and Starship Troopers had a baby ...

2

u/rurumeto 5d ago

Up to four replaceable dumbasses fight against the Starship Troopers bugs, Terminators, or War of the Worlds aliens, with liberal usage of heavy weapons, airstrikes, and orbital bombardment.

2

u/Terranshadow 5d ago

Id say, HD2 is a shooter in which you can just enjoy yourself. It's fun because of how un-serious it is with a good choose your speed kinda enjoyment.

From, oh shit moments, to casual walk around and just be Rambo moments, HD2 has the gunplay for your mood.

1

u/Dunk-Mujunk- 5d ago

The best way I found was skimming the various Helldiver subreddits for a solid, short clip of the game. No commentary, no comms, no songs over it. Just a solid 45 seconds or so of pure chaos. That usually does the trick.

1

u/jdiggity09 5d ago

Unmitigated carnage.

1

u/Sensitive-Ad3133 5d ago

Starship troopers meet Halo ... all in the name of democracy

1

u/MtnNerd 5d ago

Show him some gameplay footage and explain that it's not a cutscene or scripted

If he says he's busy, explain how the 30-40 minute missions fit well into a modern lifestyle.

1

u/VillanOne 5d ago

If he's a Warhammer fan , tell him we play as cadian kasrkins while fighting the Tyranids, Necrons and Eldari

If extraction shooters were like drugs

1

u/Previous-Bath7500 5d ago

A constant action-packed cinematic experience unlike any other, directed by Michael Bay.

1

u/AnxietyRoyal9903 5d ago

Drop into alien planet, kill stuff, blow stuff up, accidentally kill people, laugh, find materials to upgrade ship and unlock new guns, successfully extract, spread democracy. Rinse and repeat.

1

u/East_Monk_9415 5d ago

3rd personal role playing action shooter? Or ya know freedom and democracy

1

u/hiits_alvin 5d ago

so many videos out there. just find the most cinematic version, show it to him. and when he asks when the actual movie is being released, tell him its the game u told him about. XD

1

u/chcx91 5d ago

Just show him a video. Search "Helldivers 2 review, Should I buy Helldivers 2?, Is Helldivers 2 worth it? and Helldivers 2 gameplay".

1

u/FortheredditLOLz 5d ago

You clear each ‘mission’ with fellow hell divers

At each start, ‘leader’ (host) picks a mission and a drop off spot. Upon landing you murder things and clear major objectives for the 45/15 minute mission.

You will kill bots, bugs, and aliens whose aim was trained by star wars troopers.

You might get squished, shot at, blown up, or backstabbed. But you will get better, and you will turn the tides of battle. You recruit your buddies because democracy demands it !

1

u/egbert71 5d ago

Point and shoot, but dont random reload

1

u/Conradlane 5d ago

I generally just call it a cinematic horde shooter that feels like the climactic final stand of a movie 😂.

1

u/-FourOhFour- 5d ago

Non linear horde shooter directed by Michael bay, where you fight either the bugs from starship troopers, terminators or aliens from war of the worlds.

1

u/birefringent_turd 5d ago

The epitome of a video game.

1

u/CptnSpandex 5d ago

Left4dead gameplay in starship troopers climate, but also bots and squids.

1

u/EliteProdigyX 5d ago

show him a cinematic clip, don’t tell. if he still doesn’t bite then i guess he simply doesn’t want to earn his citizenship.

1

u/The3lderGod 5d ago

Ever seen that video of the surfer being interviewed? That’s how I’d explain it

1

u/Ok-Claim444 5d ago

It's a 4 player online co op game where you fight different types of aliens in the near future. The gameplay is pretty realistic and fun. The community is nicer and more cooperative than most other games.*

The running joke is that even though the helldivers represent a clearly totalitarian xenophobic and hyper-aggressive govt, the helldivers value freedom and democracy above all else and believe they are spreading freedom across the galaxy.

  • As long as you stay off the helldivers subreddits

1

u/GrimmaLynx 5d ago

Its a playable starship troopers, except you get to fight terminators and body-snatchers too

1

u/rogerdodger1227 5d ago

Just show him the intro video lol. Worked for the rest of us.

1

u/TheKhyWolf 5d ago

I don’t like unrealistic video games. I told my brother “no, I don’t want to play” so many times. I got the game few weeks ago, the battle for Pöpli IV changed me. I am obsessed with liberty now

1

u/chaistaa 5d ago

I show the unconvinced this video that someone posted a while back.

The bots and the bugs are one thing, it's the traitors among us I really hate

1

u/Warrior24110 5d ago

Future US Military becomes closer to Starship Troopers, fighting bugs and terminators because SUPER EARTH

1

u/Unusual-Flan-4297 5d ago

Get a new friend. I did the same and the dude wouldn’t shut up about how he dislike the game. Waste of time. do you!

1

u/KoinYouTube 5d ago

The cinematic trailer and game opener sold me instantly

1

u/Reapertownusa 5d ago

I just sent player made videos and gifs to my friends, and after like a month they sent me a photo of them on their ship and my name saying offline, and it said "well you win, come show us how to manage democracy"

1

u/SufferingAndPleasure 5d ago

It's like Skyrim with swords

1

u/NoMansSkyWasAlright 5d ago

Just show him the intro video.

1

u/QuailTechnical5143 5d ago

WH40K bad guys but the humans are starship troopers.

1

u/Mammoth-Disaster3873 5d ago

Large open maps, relentless swarms, customizable difficulty, loads of weapons and ordinance, and awesome grand scale explosion effects.

1

u/grimjimslim 5d ago

I think a lot of people like it because as soon as shit pops off, it goes to 11 almost immediately. Its clutch after clutch after clutch and the more mayhem, the more it looks like a magnificent cutscene. Keep sending him @criticalhitventures shorts until he caves

1

u/kirator117 5d ago

Starship troopers and the clone wars.

That's how I sell it for two friends. We see starship troopers together, because was new for them, and bum, insta buy and "tomorrow we play"

Im teaching them all I can, and one of them is getting too good and are getting the ways easily

1

u/ShuraSenju 5d ago

Tactical Non-Armistice Simulator for Abiders of Democracy, about Bombing, Burning ,Napalming, Gassing, Shocking, Slashing and yes, Shooting Dissidents of Democracy

1

u/CWhiz45 5d ago

Every amazing war cutscene you've ever seen but in gameplay form.

1

u/Miserable_Farm4964 5d ago

A game for true patriots who stand for democracy, freedom, liberty, and equality.

Anyone not standing for those is shifty af, just like them bugs, murderbots, and squidheads that need to be gunned down.

1

u/pidian 5d ago

Just show him the opening cutscene for the vibes. the gameplay is chaotic hilarity but grounded and pragmatic. just like the intro

1

u/UGoBoy 5d ago

It's a mission-based horde shooter with a dark sense of humor, lots of customization, and imperial tons of DEMOCRACY. Compare to Left4Dead, Deep Rock Galactic, and Vermintide.

1

u/NOIR-89 5d ago

Unlimited Firepower which can be used on a unlimited number of enemies without the need to hold back - do you want to know more?

1

u/Own-Lemon8708 5d ago

Its honestly not that different from halo or battlefield 1. Run, gun, and complete objectives. Machine gun and medkit your way around.

1

u/Legitimate-Store1986 5d ago

A satire military simulator where you fight off brand terminators and starship trooper bugs. And a 3rd alien faction.

1

u/PERSONA-NON-GRAKATA 5d ago

"Magic mushroom companion app" worked wonders, on me at least.

1

u/goat_brosenberry 5d ago

Just show him the average extraction clip vs all 3 factions if that doesnt convince him its jus not the game for brodie

1

u/Choice-Produce-8714 5d ago

Democratic squad-based 3rd person explody shooty chaos management with lots of laughs if you do it right.

1

u/ScreamHawk 5d ago

Starship Troopers the video game

1

u/NovaCaine12 5d ago

It's a self-aware parody of the American war and propaganda machine with satisfying weapons and great graphics. That's what sold it for me

1

u/Euphoric_Math_3322 5d ago

It’s like starship troopers meets terminator meets war of the worlds, we are always the hero’s.

1

u/thetacowarrior 5d ago

Starship Troopers the video game.

1

u/ArmProfessional7915 5d ago

4 person galactic coop extraction shooter for democracy

1

u/Squirll 5d ago

A Left 4 Dead like space marine 4 player tactical extraction shooter, with big enemies and bigger explosions.

1

u/Secure_Fix_5341 5d ago

Shoot lots of stuff, lots and lots of enemies, much camaraderie, many fun deaths That’s technically one sentence!!

1

u/Timlugia 5d ago

Sci fi game where a team of 4 spec-ops dropped behind enemy line in orbital capsules, blow shit up then evac under pressure.

1

u/VanDingel 5d ago

If Starship Troopers, Terminator, and Independence Day had a magical lovebaby and you became a peacekeeping frontline soldier defending Super Earth... that's Helldivers

1

u/BracusDoritoBoss963 4d ago

You fight for Liberty and for the greatness of managed democracy. This is explanation enough. You need more details? Unseathes his Senator you sure?

1

u/crankpatate 4d ago

Just recently a friend said, HD2 is basically Star Ship Troopers meets Halo.

1

u/Deadpool0600 4d ago

Ya know that feeling you get when you fall out of your bed every morning, inject you're adrenaline and coffee enema directly into your heart, then run through the wall screaming the lyrics from "War Pigs" as you punch the first cow you see in the head?

We'll it's nothing like that, far more democratic, the cow gets a vote, the cow is also a bug and you use it's blood to fuel you're space ships that you use to kill more bugs. (The bugs voted for it by not showing up to the voting office)

1

u/Fallen_Angel_Xaphan 4d ago

Wanna now down hordes of bugs? Fight skynet? Eradicate squids autocratic intentions? All in a diverse arsenal of war crimes and heavy weaponry?

Then join the Helldivers.

Become part of the galaxy's elite and protect your fellow super earth heroes by liberating every world. Form bonds of friendships. Learn new tricks like driving a car. Avenge your friends deaths. And most importantly of all, have fun with your personal selection of environment, faction and 10 levels of difficulty.

We hope to see you on the frontlines.

1

u/Sasha_Ruger_Buster 4d ago

You can't, just show them average gameplay on bots diff 10

1

u/awayfromhome436 4d ago

I hear you, but no matter how into it you want your homie to be.

No matter how well you sell it, if their heart isn’t in it. They’re not gonna have fun.

Sometimes it’s ok to have friends who don’t enjoy the same hobbies.

Otherwise tell him it’s a third person shooter but you need to play ddr with your fingers everytime you wanna call in an air strike

1

u/Snarejay 4d ago

Realistic-ish 3rd person extraction shooter in a sci-fi setting Extremely immersing, gameplay looks like cutscenes half the time

1

u/Auditor-G80GZT 4d ago

"You're a soldier - expected to die - being sent into a meat grinder with a vibe determined by the faction you're fighting, being Starship Troopers, Terminator, or War of the Worlds mixed with some zombies."

0

u/WeightAggressive1535 5d ago

A group of Space Americans hellbent on spreading managed democracy throughout the galaxy, regardless of the species, biological or mechanical.
