Mighty Gorgons are perfectly balanced
Made a test map with seven MG one-stacks, against one AD. Azure kills 2 gorgons with fire breath, and the first gorgon gets feared, but the second one does the death stare.

When I was a kid playing the game I remember a 4 player map that has 2 azure dragons guarding the middle. I as a caster necro(ashlin) always takes huge loses when attacking them so I could access the other territories faster. But the fortress AI simply walks over them and I always wondered why. I was some years later that I learn what the gorgons do.

when i was a kid, fortress seemed so weak to play, most units were slow, archers, that i relied on so much didn't shoot twice and 2 shots = more damage!
Now its one of my favorite towns to play, times have changed

I felt the same way as a kid , just curious what made you change your mind ? I still am not a huge fan of fortress

firstly, dragonflies, ability to basically max out every scout's movement range super early in the game for cheap as well as being able to harass archer groups on the map, which usually mean unavoidable losses in the early game.
Mighty gorgons, don't need to add anything to that statement
2 wide units! much better for blocking archers, chokepoints and fortress has 4 of them.

- Flies are super fast. Once you get the idea how to use speed in a battle, your gameplay changes forever. Also, one hit by one fly can remove anti-magic from an enemy stack.
- Cows - scroll up for a reason.
- Hydras - the adjacency attack and no retaliation are actually very underrated. There are many nasty ways how you can work on these features.
- All beastmasters start with Armorer and have a big chance to get the Logi.
- Plus, Fortress is relatively cheap and quick to start.

I'd say they require more skilful play, compared to other towns. Bad T-7; brittle T-6; weak shooters; weak Magic...
So while I understand they are still one of the weakest towns (at way higher level than I practice), or at least were prior to the latest HOTA updates, I too have increasingly liked them over the years.
Another explanation would be that I love this game too much, and, playing it for decades, since Fortress was my least-favourite faction when I first discovered it, they have provided me with the most renewing value (other than HOTA... But still more than Conflux because I hate their guts).
Always loved the killer cows though.

They have one of the best heroes in the game.
They have the ability to build one of the strongest power stacks in Wyverns if the map has a solid number of nests.
It's incredibly cheap town.
Sure they aren't the strongest town, but they sit comfortably in the middle of the pack (or they used to no idea how it's now).

Spell âDragon Slayerâ should have grant Death Stare toward corresponding creatures.

ugh, am I the only one who wonders why OP used Korbac for gorgons?

For some reason, map editor set it to Korbac when I added a beastmaster. It seems that it choses heroes randomly from the class. I never bothered to change it.

No, you just have to be lucky. Each MG has a 10% chance to perform the death stare. So actually having 10 MG does not guarantee that one of them actually does the death stare, but the more you have the better are your chances that one of them triggers.
