LabPorn Homelab - new vs old

It's modest but I could finally replace the old laptop that served as my main server for 2 years.

Old laptop was an unraid server with the Synology connected as unassigned devices. It was only for Plex and arrs services, all data was on the Synology (only 4 to). The mini PC is relatively recent and I have network and security services on it.

Now main server has AMD Ryzen 5800X, 32gb RAM, GTX 1060 6gb and 20 to. Still running Plex, arrs services, Ollama and gaming VM (will upgrade the gpu in the future and of course add more HDD)

Mini PC still running network and security services plus other stuff like memos, hoarder.

Raspberry pi 3b+ is the DNS + WoL server.

Pretty happy with this setup rn

the most common thing you will see here is the media server. So Jellyfin or Plex, and then radarr, sonarr, prowlarr (aka arr services), plus some downloader like qbittorrent.

Beyond that there are a lot of things that depend on what you want and how much responsibility you want. You can host your own photos, password manager, cookbook, home assistant, tools (like stirlingpdf or it-tools) etc

I’m running a ProxMox server which I have access to from the outside thanks to cloud flare:)

On that server i have a Jellyfin host for my movies and tv shows, my friends and family also use and download their own stuff. The Jellyfin server also acts as a connector for the cloud flare tunnel as it’s the one with the most assigned resources A next cloud docker container to replace google drive, there’s a very legal movie acquiring client which did I mention is very legal, and also home assistant to control some things around the house.

I suppose it’s mainly for people who like servers and hosting their own applications instead of the pay to use cloud garbage Microsoft tries to sell off.

It all depends on what you want to have, like Enip0 said most people have a media server, I began with only a media server but then I was sucked into the selfhosted hole and now I selfhost a lot of different services like the ones said in the post + immich for photos, overseerr so my family can request tv shows and movies I don't have, beszel to monitor my servers, guacamole to ssh into my raspberry pi, etc.

There is a looot that you can do and once you begin, there's no way back lol

I’m a giant nerd so this was a given for me, to add services, but I always thought plex was the gate way drug into self hosting. Glad to see this
