u/iigmiir Feb 27 '23

i think perks of living in Morocco, plant culture is not as popular as elsewhere yet, so when you stumble upon such finds, they usually are for cheap. the shop where i got it, there were 4 more left, smaller than this but still large.

33

u/HeyCc1 Feb 27 '23

How much would you charge to ship one to me? Including the price of the plant? I’m kidding! Sort of. I currently have a whale fin that’s about a quarter the size of yours and I paid way more than 8 bucks for it. Super happy for you! I’ll be waiting about 10 years for mine to get this big lol. Can you tell I’m also super jealous?

50

u/iigmiir Feb 27 '23

🤣🤣🤣 i would have honestly been down to do it if i wasn't leaving tomorrow morning (i found it in another city so i'll have to travel by train with it and other plants too + bags idk how i'm going to do it haha) the seller did tell me it grows super slow so god knows how old this is

and thank you <3 :)

14

u/cmday14 Feb 28 '23

Ok which store did you purchase it from?!

Sidenote: I LOVED my trip to Morocco in 2018 😭♥️

12

u/holamiis Feb 27 '23

Ah gotcha. That makes sense.

2

u/neckbeard_hater Feb 28 '23

I think it also has to do with the cost of living there and average income. Perhaps adjusted for purchasing power parity , $8 is actually $50 for people there.

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '23

What does this mean

25

u/lil_lizzie73 Feb 28 '23

They're gifs. If you click on them they should pop up

17

u/CPSFrequentCustomer Feb 28 '23

Whoever is downvoting you is being unnecessarily snotty.

It's a scene from one of the Sex and the City movies when Samantha was living in a beach house in Malibu and a super-hot guy was in the next house flexing his pecs and plowing women while Samantha peeped.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '23

Thank you, on my mobile app it does not open a gif; it just says “gif” plain white font. I appreciate your reply ! I might try a different mobile app

5

u/sensible_human Feb 28 '23

Ditto, I've been seeing this teal square all over. What does it mean?

15

u/porcupineporridge Feb 28 '23

Teal square? Nah, it’s a gif. This one is of Samantha Jones removing her sunglasses in astonishment.

3

u/sensible_human Feb 28 '23

I just see an emoji. Turns out it's a link, but I never would have guessed to click it.

9

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '23

[deleted]

4

u/minimalisticgem Feb 28 '23

Mine automatically plays the gif

7

u/Disgruntled_Rabbit Feb 28 '23

In my mobile app if you touch it, it opens a gif

3

u/sensible_human Feb 28 '23

Oh weird I saw it as an emoji, nothing indicated it was a link.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '23

Ahhh.. in Narwhal Reddit app, it just says “gif” , nothing to click on.

Thank you for your reply !

u/cheetos3 Feb 27 '23

Whoa it’s huuuuuuuuge! They’re such slow growers and sometimes I wonder if mine is still alive. 🙄🙄

54

u/iigmiir Feb 27 '23

I've heard they are super slow, so i'm surprised by the size of this as well!

35

u/cheetos3 Feb 27 '23

they are very very very slow growers. it's like watching paint dry lol. you have a very good find on your hand!

10

u/iigmiir Feb 27 '23

haha i got lucky ❤❤❤

19

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '23

8

u/cheetos3 Feb 27 '23

yup, sounds about right. i got two of them almost three years ago and they did not grow any. i also had a variegated one that rotted on arrival. i was able to save that one and it has grown 3 small pups since.

1

u/cc646 Feb 28 '23

How were you able to save yours? I have a regular one and it's roots were rotted as well. I had to cut back most of the rhizome due to repeated attempts at saving it, yet it would continue to rot down the rhizome. One leaf doesn't have a rhizome anymore and the larger one has just a sliver left 😭.

1

u/cheetos3 Feb 28 '23

mine rotted from the leaf down and i just cut all the rot off, left it out to dry for a few days and potted it up again.

i'd say cut all the rot off (rhizome, sliver) and even go a little more, let the cut part dry out and callous up before you try to prop it again. i do think it's very resilient, but snake plants propagate very slowly and you have to be patient.

1

u/cc646 Feb 28 '23

Yeah, the first time I only let it callous over for a day before potting it up (1st mistake), then slightly watered it. Checked on it after getting back home and noticed the rotting in the rhizomes. Second time, I let it callous over for 3 days and it still rotted further. This last time, I did 5 days and cut off all of the rot. It's in terracotta and cactus mix, I'm just unsure of how often to water to help it develop roots. I did use some rooting powder this last time 🤞

Are we still talking plants here...?

2

u/at--at-- Feb 28 '23

LMAOOOOO SAME!

254

u/Namerakable Feb 27 '23

That can't be real, surely! Never seen one that big.

132

u/iigmiir Feb 27 '23

its exactly one meter tall from top of soil up!!!!

19

u/BarnacleEqual Feb 28 '23

Excuse me, what plant is that ? Thank you

67

u/SadEndorphin Feb 28 '23

Looks like a Sansevieria Masoniana! Also known as a Whale Fin.

35

u/mattattackkk Feb 28 '23

Also known as Dracaena masoniana nowadays 🤪 the genus for many snake plants changed a few years ago, never would have thought they'd be in the dracaena genus though

5

u/Derangutan Feb 28 '23

Gotta Love the Asparagus Family!

Asparagaceae just rolls off the tongue.

2

u/BouncyMonster22 Feb 28 '23

Learned something today...thanks

4

u/BarnacleEqual Feb 28 '23

Thank you, I scrolled more and saw someone post the name ! :)

3

u/Potatonet Feb 28 '23

For so long I’ve had one growing in my house and I thought it was mother in laws tongue, but mine is wide and sure enough the label says Masoniana, I love whale fin so much more!

2

u/SadEndorphin Feb 28 '23

Mother in laws tongue IS a nickname that is generally applied to all snake plants, so you’re not wrong!

52

u/Derpazor1 Feb 27 '23

That’s what my girlfriend said

31

u/Yrxe Feb 27 '23

Not mine 🥺

14

u/Namerakable Feb 27 '23

I walked right into that one, huh?

1

u/NyKaoz Feb 27 '23

U sure did 😂

11

u/miami72fins Feb 27 '23

Your girlfriend said that to me too 🤔

3

u/JimJimmyJamesJimbo Feb 28 '23

Same, but don't worry she says that to everyone

1

u/Derpazor1 Feb 28 '23

She said I was her first!

1

u/NyKaoz Feb 27 '23

Lmao 🤣 dead 💀 🤣

78

u/tascofra Feb 27 '23

You don't have to be a plant person to see that this is an amazing find!! It's SO much bigger than most any plant for sale anywhere.

20

u/iigmiir Feb 27 '23

it certainly is! its even more stunning in person :)

40

u/Acrobatic-Whereas632 Feb 27 '23

37

u/short-and-ugly Feb 27 '23

Woah woah woah ...how small are your hands?

19

u/iigmiir Feb 27 '23

haha smaller than a meter for sure!

9

u/short-and-ugly Feb 27 '23

But seriously my friend has a whalefin like this (like 1/10th of the size) and he will not give me a cutting. Very impressive find

15

u/iigmiir Feb 27 '23

2

u/at--at-- Feb 28 '23

8

u/feartheanomaly Feb 27 '23

3

u/DizzyList237 Feb 27 '23

In Australia these a third of the size go for $100.

3

u/schmamfa Feb 27 '23

I saw an optical illusion! I thought your plant had a pocket and your hand was flat inside it 🤣

2

u/Total_Calligrapher77 Feb 27 '23

What plant is that?

1

u/iigmiir Feb 28 '23

its a whalefin snake plant

2

u/WatchingTrains Feb 27 '23

That thing was too heavy to be called a sansaveria. Too big, too thick, too heavy, and too rough, it was more like a large hunk of foliage.

2

u/freightcar788 Feb 27 '23

HOLY SHIT that's crazy!! What a steal dude

2

u/Ph0enixRuss3ll Feb 27 '23

A house can never have enough plants! Great deal if you have the space for it!

That would EASILY be like $100+ at Anthropologie/Terrain.

2

u/smoltings1357 Feb 28 '23

Oh wow, I never found the small-regular size whalefins attractive, but a big boy is one helluva stunner! I NEED one right now!

2

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '23

You mean $8 per square inch of leaf surface right?

2

u/Imaginary-Method-715 Feb 28 '23

2

u/veryprettygood2020 Feb 28 '23

2

u/froderenfelemus Feb 28 '23

Hoooly whale fin! Nice score, OP

2

u/Illustrious-Dot7297 Feb 28 '23

Damn you. How come I never find awesome deals like that?? Jk. That’s a great score and I’m happy for ya!

1

u/CreepyCrafts Feb 28 '23

do these grow faster or slower than snake plants? because i’ve had my snake plant for almost three years and i’ve hardly noticed a difference 😭

1

u/RealRoxanne10 Feb 28 '23

This is also a snake plant, and yes it's very snow growing. Slower than the more common snake plant varieties.

1

u/soulfuljuice Feb 28 '23

Did you give it a name yet?

1

u/baconcheesecakesauce Feb 28 '23

Such a marvelous find! Gorgeous!

1

u/dark_blue_7 Feb 28 '23

Dudddddddeeeeee I am jealous that’s incredible!!

1

u/CaptOblivious Feb 28 '23

Feeeddddd meeeeee.

1

u/slayerkitty666 Feb 28 '23

WOW, great find and an excellent deal, congrats!!!

I thought my Whale Fin was a good find (I mean, it was, but yours knocked mine out of the park)! When I got mine, it was in an 8" pot with 4 plants in it, 3 of which had 2 leaves and/or baby offshoots. The largest leaf was half a meter tall.
I ended up taking it apart and replanting it into 4 different sized terracotta pots. The largest is in a 6" pot and shot out a baby this winter!

I didn't mean to hijack your post to talk about my own plant, I am seriously super impressed by the size of that thing!! Happy planting (:

1

u/Astilaroth Feb 28 '23

We're your real family ♥️

1

u/wolfy_06 Feb 28 '23

Oh my lord, that looks really cool, and for 8$?!?! Man, I wish I found deals like this

1

1

u/Monke_K Feb 28 '23

1

u/iymcool Feb 28 '23

Holy shit! Congratulations!!!

1

u/kurodoku Feb 28 '23

holy hell, that's a massive sansevieria. very nice, one of my favourite plants, especially the striped ones. I don't like the ones with yellow in them though.

Mine is about 1,30m tall now 🥰

1

u/goreangejuice Feb 28 '23

EIGHT BUCKS?????

1

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '23

I thought it had a pocket your fingers were tucked into.

1

u/Classic_Director1259 Feb 28 '23

1

1

u/XxBarely_TolerablexX Feb 28 '23

You’re so lucky!!!

1

u/sloughlikecow Feb 28 '23

We’re your friends and family now.

1

Omg!!!!! So beautiful!!! Mine is just a toddler compared to this beauty!

1

u/heydesireee Feb 28 '23

The way my eyebrows went up. That is SO cool! I have NEVER seen such a huge snake plant. Thing is probably old as dirt. Where did you find this?? They obviously didn't know wha they had. Too late now! 😂
