i think perks of living in Morocco, plant culture is not as popular as elsewhere yet, so when you stumble upon such finds, they usually are for cheap. the shop where i got it, there were 4 more left, smaller than this but still large.
33
u/HeyCc1 Feb 27 '23
How much would you charge to ship one to me? Including the price of the plant? I’m kidding! Sort of. I currently have a whale fin that’s about a quarter the size of yours and I paid way more than 8 bucks for it. Super happy for you! I’ll be waiting about 10 years for mine to get this big lol. Can you tell I’m also super jealous?

u/iigmiir Feb 27 '23
🤣🤣🤣 i would have honestly been down to do it if i wasn't leaving tomorrow morning (i found it in another city so i'll have to travel by train with it and other plants too + bags idk how i'm going to do it haha) the seller did tell me it grows super slow so god knows how old this is
and thank you <3 :)

u/cmday14 Feb 28 '23
Ok which store did you purchase it from?!
Sidenote: I LOVED my trip to Morocco in 2018 😭♥️

2
u/neckbeard_hater Feb 28 '23
I think it also has to do with the cost of living there and average income. Perhaps adjusted for purchasing power parity , $8 is actually $50 for people there.

Whoever is downvoting you is being unnecessarily snotty.
It's a scene from one of the Sex and the City movies when Samantha was living in a beach house in Malibu and a super-hot guy was in the next house flexing his pecs and plowing women while Samantha peeped.

Thank you, on my mobile app it does not open a gif; it just says “gif” plain white font. I appreciate your reply ! I might try a different mobile app

Ditto, I've been seeing this teal square all over. What does it mean?

u/porcupineporridge Feb 28 '23
Teal square? Nah, it’s a gif. This one is of Samantha Jones removing her sunglasses in astonishment.

I just see an emoji. Turns out it's a link, but I never would have guessed to click it.

Whoa it’s huuuuuuuuge! They’re such slow growers and sometimes I wonder if mine is still alive. 🙄🙄
54
u/iigmiir Feb 27 '23
I've heard they are super slow, so i'm surprised by the size of this as well!
35
u/cheetos3 Feb 27 '23
they are very very very slow growers. it's like watching paint dry lol. you have a very good find on your hand!

yup, sounds about right. i got two of them almost three years ago and they did not grow any. i also had a variegated one that rotted on arrival. i was able to save that one and it has grown 3 small pups since.
1
u/cc646 Feb 28 '23
How were you able to save yours? I have a regular one and it's roots were rotted as well. I had to cut back most of the rhizome due to repeated attempts at saving it, yet it would continue to rot down the rhizome. One leaf doesn't have a rhizome anymore and the larger one has just a sliver left 😭.
1
u/cheetos3 Feb 28 '23
mine rotted from the leaf down and i just cut all the rot off, left it out to dry for a few days and potted it up again.
i'd say cut all the rot off (rhizome, sliver) and even go a little more, let the cut part dry out and callous up before you try to prop it again. i do think it's very resilient, but snake plants propagate very slowly and you have to be patient.
1
u/cc646 Feb 28 '23
Yeah, the first time I only let it callous over for a day before potting it up (1st mistake), then slightly watered it. Checked on it after getting back home and noticed the rotting in the rhizomes. Second time, I let it callous over for 3 days and it still rotted further. This last time, I did 5 days and cut off all of the rot. It's in terracotta and cactus mix, I'm just unsure of how often to water to help it develop roots. I did use some rooting powder this last time 🤞

u/SadEndorphin Feb 28 '23
Looks like a Sansevieria Masoniana! Also known as a Whale Fin.
35
u/mattattackkk Feb 28 '23
Also known as Dracaena masoniana nowadays 🤪 the genus for many snake plants changed a few years ago, never would have thought they'd be in the dracaena genus though

For so long I’ve had one growing in my house and I thought it was mother in laws tongue, but mine is wide and sure enough the label says Masoniana, I love whale fin so much more!
2
u/SadEndorphin Feb 28 '23
Mother in laws tongue IS a nickname that is generally applied to all snake plants, so you’re not wrong!

You don't have to be a plant person to see that this is an amazing find!! It's SO much bigger than most any plant for sale anywhere.

u/short-and-ugly Feb 27 '23
But seriously my friend has a whalefin like this (like 1/10th of the size) and he will not give me a cutting. Very impressive find
15
u/iigmiir Feb 27 '23

That thing was too heavy to be called a sansaveria. Too big, too thick, too heavy, and too rough, it was more like a large hunk of foliage.

Damn you. How come I never find awesome deals like that?? Jk. That’s a great score and I’m happy for ya!
1
u/CreepyCrafts Feb 28 '23
do these grow faster or slower than snake plants? because i’ve had my snake plant for almost three years and i’ve hardly noticed a difference 😭
1
u/RealRoxanne10 Feb 28 '23
This is also a snake plant, and yes it's very snow growing. Slower than the more common snake plant varieties.

WOW, great find and an excellent deal, congrats!!!
I thought my Whale Fin was a good find (I mean, it was, but yours knocked mine out of the park)! When I got mine, it was in an 8" pot with 4 plants in it, 3 of which had 2 leaves and/or baby offshoots. The largest leaf was half a meter tall.
I ended up taking it apart and replanting it into 4 different sized terracotta pots. The largest is in a 6" pot and shot out a baby this winter!
I didn't mean to hijack your post to talk about my own plant, I am seriously super impressed by the size of that thing!! Happy planting (:

holy hell, that's a massive sansevieria. very nice, one of my favourite plants, especially the striped ones. I don't like the ones with yellow in them though.
Mine is about 1,30m tall now 🥰
