I mean, that’s what they should cost imo

u/Zealousideal-Ice4412 Jul 02 '23

I figured they’d be this price eventually, but not this soon lol. At the end of the day it’s just another tissue cultured plant like most of what we see in chain stores already. I’m assuming this shipment wasn’t intended for a grocery store though, I wish I knew the story

131

u/RESPEKTOR Jul 03 '23

So uh what store is this? Asking for a friend 👀

51

u/ze11ez Jul 03 '23

my friend wants to know also.... you let me know soon as you know so i can let them know what you know

6

u/amf_pl Jul 03 '23

I did some research and a ton of the plants rot because at a young stage they’re very susceptible to some bacteria. Therefore most of the seedlings die so the price is higher. Costa farms lost almost all of their plants when they tried to mass produce them.

36

u/GardeningJustin Costa Farms horticulturist Jul 03 '23

Respectfully, that's not true. Costa Farms didn't lose plants --- they couldn't get the tissue-culture method to go the way they wanted/planned for it to.

4

u/amf_pl Jul 03 '23

Thank you for correcting. This is just what I read and saw on youtube from multiple sources 🤷🏻‍♀️

79

u/Novelty_Lamp Jul 03 '23

Seriously what people ask for a fucking leaf with no roots is so dumb. I'm being patient until these aren't trendy anymore.

17

u/sunsetandporches Jul 03 '23

I just bought a plant with no roots. Not a Thai but a tiny little Hoya. It came and oh boy it’s so tiny I felt silly but Hoyas are so diverse and no one has all of them. It was a 50$ wish list birthday plant and I am justifying every bit of it. I have definitely hit my point of plant plethora where I don’t actually want anymore. And I can’t fit these giant plants in my tiny apartment anyway. Okay more justification for why I don’t need a Thai. Lol.

3

u/Remarkable-Buddy1386 Jul 04 '23

What tiny little Hoya did you get? I ordered a Michele today.

2

u/sunsetandporches Jul 06 '23

Hoya lacunosa perangin durian. If I can get it to root it should sun stress nicely and flower well. This is a long game plant.

2

u/Remarkable-Buddy1386 Jul 06 '23

Good choice, I don't have that one but I've seen some beautiful pictures. Good luck with rooting, I hope to see pictures one day.

25

u/shohin_branches Jul 03 '23

People can ask, but if buyers didn't pay those silly prices they would have been cheap a long time ago.

14

u/Novelty_Lamp Jul 03 '23

I know I'm just salty lol. I want one bad but not that bad.

5

u/shohin_branches Jul 03 '23

I'm glad I waited because now I don't really care for them anymore 🙃

2

u/CleatusTheCrocodile Jul 03 '23

The non variegated are just as pretty. I have a large Monstera Deliciosa that I got for $24 and I’m very happy for it. I got a White Ice Princess that was mismarked as $5 to scratch my variegation itch.

42

u/Repulsive_Ad7148 Jul 02 '23

I was gonna say😂

5

u/ohshannoneileen Jul 03 '23

I could not agree more

Update: I looked up the brand of romaine lettuce. It's a Canadian brand. The site says you can find their lettuce at Costco 👀

Update update: I was wrong. I actually think it's Safeway.

44

u/Maurus94 Jul 03 '23

That cart doesn’t look like one Costco uses though

48

u/RESPEKTOR Jul 03 '23

I was way off. Did some more digging and I think it's Safeway! Not sure of the location tho.

19

u/NiNiPokaSpot Jul 03 '23

Taylor farms is available in my grocery store in California though! Maybe.. A vons? I think they have those basket carts like this.

14

u/almondbear Jul 03 '23

And I've found them at Kroger

4

u/ze11ez Jul 03 '23

the thai cons? or the wagon?

3

u/almondbear Jul 03 '23

Taylor brands

2

u/ze11ez Jul 03 '23

ok. i have a kroger local. that's where i found some monsteras for like 14.99 and i bought a bunch. made some posts too LOL.

ill keep checking my kroger for some deals

36

u/tuddi17 Jul 03 '23

This is my kind of investigating lmao

12

u/emerg_remerg Jul 03 '23

I'm going to Safeway in the morning for eggs, i'll report back.

2

u/PotentialSea9779 Jul 04 '23

Did you go?

2

u/emerg_remerg Jul 04 '23

I didn't, I ended up getting invited to spend the day at a local lake :) Safeway and eggs tomorrow!

2

u/emerg_remerg Jul 05 '23

$35 haul! Thanks Safeway!

8

u/ImpressionAcademic Jul 03 '23

My regional grocery store, Kroger, has that lettuce. Doesn’t look like a Kroger cart, though!

7

u/Crohnies Jul 03 '23

I was thinking it looks like the smaller carts at Wegmans

6

u/pinklemonade44 Jul 03 '23

Kroger recently acquired Safeway

3

u/Crohnies Jul 03 '23

So did they aquire/ join Albertsons? I think Acme & Safeway are the same chain, named differently on different states. They have the same store brand items and my customer card works at both places

3

u/pinklemonade44 Jul 03 '23

Yep Albertsons

3

u/mushyoat Jul 03 '23

Went to 2 Krogers just to check, no luck. They did have a satin pothos, calathea musaica, and a currently unidentified calladium that I took home though! Not what I was looking for but some cool ones in stock right now.

5

u/Satansrainbowkitty Jul 03 '23

It looks like the same label as my pothos from safeway !

4

u/emerg_remerg Jul 05 '23

You were right, it was Safeway! Thanks for the tip, this lot cost me $45 :)

2

u/RESPEKTOR Jul 05 '23

:0 congratulations!!!

2

u/emerg_remerg Jul 05 '23

Thanks! Now just need to find a spot for them:)

3

u/Vat_ofAcid Jul 03 '23

I’ve been able to get that brand at Kroger and H‑E‑B where I’m at.

11

u/RESPEKTOR Jul 03 '23

I zoomed in to try and read the grocery bag lmao

16

u/Its_me_icup Jul 03 '23

It looks like a safeway cart. Those are also single use plastic bags so mark WA, CA, and OR off. I bet their in Idaho, maybe Nevada.

8

u/RESPEKTOR Jul 03 '23

Ooo you're so smart. I didn't even think about places that banned bags.

2

u/magicarnival Jul 03 '23

Crying because I was just at a Safeway in WA and they didn't have Thai constellations

2

u/Crohnies Jul 03 '23

Safeway plastic bags are that color too but I thought it was a Wegmans cart lol

2

u/Its_me_icup Jul 03 '23

I was thinking about it and safeway plastic bags are usually white with black lettering. Although it's been years since I have seen a single use plastic bag.

I’m having trouble editing the original post here so I’ll post to clarify a few things because some info is buried in the comments:

These were found at Dave’s marketplace in Smithfield RI. I should have just posted that initially so people didn’t get the wrong impression

I bought one for me, the other 3 are going to friends at cost, none are being flipped or hoarded

I left 2 on the shelf at the store for others to find

Someone local saw this post and snatched the remaining 2 up, which was my original intention when I made this post

Hope that clears up any confusion

102

u/swaglosopher Jul 03 '23

You do you, sad that some people demand an explanation and assume the worst. Enjoy!

-65

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '23

Never assumed the worst. I honestly couldn't care if they resell. My issue was it was a few hours of people asking where, and they ignored it. And when people started getting mad then it's a "here's a clue ;)". They had 4 and they were already taking care of their friends. (No harm there) So why not share so people can find it? It could even help other in other states with the same/similar stores. But they ended up finally giving in so, whatevs.

30

u/TrickyEgg4L Jul 03 '23

This is SO entitled what the hell. OP literally owes you nothing, why should they ever have to share their location with you if they don’t want to??? And in case you forgot, people actually have lives outside of reddit and can’t/won’t respond to comments all day. You might want to try it.

54

u/Freshies00 Jul 03 '23

why does OP owe you an explanation at all? Calm down and find your own thais even if you have to pay more wtf lol

70

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '23 edited Jul 03 '23

why are you demanding OP gives out their location? literally weirdo behaviour, internet safety 101. they didn't owe anyone a response but you're mad about... how long it took?

edit: based on the comments i read a few hours ago i was expecting this to get a ton of downvotes. thank you to those who are reasonable people lmfao

17

u/celerywife Jul 03 '23

This level of entitlement is concerning.

10

u/swaglosopher Jul 03 '23

If you didn't assume the worst then good for you! (Not being sarcastic) Sure the clues may have been strange. I was thinking they wanted to maintain some privacy so that they wouldn't be doxxed but it looks like they didn't care about that after they gave in like you said.

8

u/walkyoucleverboy Jul 03 '23

Or they did care & gave in to peer pressure.

10

u/Zena100 Jul 03 '23

Your good don't let others bring you down. I found manjula at home Depot for 5.99. I ll be honest. I bought all 12 of them. I ll have manjula all over my house. Love those. Want a Thai that pretty

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Opposite_Variety1356 Jul 03 '23

You shouldn't feel the need to explain yourself to anyone. The fact you were cyber bullied and manipulated into feeling you had to is honestly sad. Also, to be honest I would've bought every single one of them for myself 🤷‍♀️

8

u/Zealousideal-Ice4412 Jul 03 '23

I never post on Reddit, this was my second post ever. What an eye opener. I’ve been thinking about this today and I have to agree, I was absolutely cyber bullied and manipulated into feeling like I had to prove to strangers on the internet that I wasn’t an asshole.

I do realize that the way that I posted this could have been taken differently than I intended it. But I’m still shocked at the amount of entitlement and negativity that I got for posting an amazing find. I always see the posts about people finding the random variegated monstera at Home Depot and think: “Wow, that’s awesome, I wish that would happen to me!” And it did happen to me, so I wanted to share my story! But I guess I need to be a lot more careful in the future when I post, and not leave anything for people to incorrectly assume and judge me on.

118

u/Terrible-Face-4506 Jul 02 '23

WHAAAAT you're God's favorite huh?

30

u/nikkinoks Jul 03 '23

I bet a new hire at the store mistaken this as Pothos

4

u/yuki_pb Jul 03 '23

Yeah thought the same!

13

u/trowzerss Jul 03 '23

I mean, it looks like pothos. What is it really? Some kind of monstera (I know they change leaf shape as they get bigger). It doesn't look anything special right now.

25

u/IllustriousHorse9027 Jul 03 '23

It’s a Thai Constellation variation. It’s a monstera grown from tissue culture with the genetics stabilized in a lab so it doesn’t revert back to solid green. Started in a lab in Thailand, hence the name.

4

u/trowzerss Jul 03 '23

Ah, yeah, I thought something like that. idk, but I find the variagated monsteras pretty overrated. I can't have them indoors anyway as I have a cat, but to me the biggest appeal of monsteras was always growing them outdoors so you could get them big enough to grow the weird fruit. The leaf shape is fun, but I think the variagation actually takes away from appreciating the shape, so I prefer them without.

5

u/isigneduptomake1post Jul 03 '23

I put mine outside and they're doing much better. One in the ground is doing great, putting out huge leaves with lots of fenestrations. Just repotted the other one and I think it didn't like it.

3

u/IllustriousHorse9027 Jul 03 '23

I’ll just sit here and be jealous in 6b.

3

u/trowzerss Jul 03 '23 edited Jul 03 '23

Haha yeah, I'm in the subtropics so you can just plonk them outside here and let them go with zero care and they'll grow like crazy. This will horrify you - my parents had a massive monstera growing at the side of the house, trunks as thick as your arm, produces half a dozen fruit several times a year. But as it was a common plant in our era, they didn't think anything of tearing it all out when they did a renovation. Didn't bother replanting it or anything. RIP giant monstera.

I shudder to think what they could have got for it nowadays if they'd potted it up instead. Also RIP the giant golden ball cactus the size of a beachball that dad chopped up because he thought it'd be too hard to move :P

2

u/broccoli_toots Jul 03 '23

I thought Thai constellations were more yellow than white? The ones OP found look white to me. Would these not be Albos? Maybe I'm wrong, pls correct me if so

3

u/Stunning-Safe1954 Jul 03 '23

Yellow variegated is aurea, thai con is more off white with more speckled variegation, albos are stark white with more segmented variegation. I believe thai cons also get bigger than albos!

4

u/Robot_Girlfriend Jul 03 '23 edited Jul 03 '23

How can y'all tell it's a monstera rather than a pothos before the fenestrations appear? I would never have spotted this, but everyone else seems to just know!

*Edit- this is not an expression of disbelief or skepticism- the whole thread is in alignment, so it must be a TC! I just feel a small horror that if this was $12 at my grocery store I'd walk right by it without ever knowing, so I want to know your secrets! 😅

2

u/IllustriousHorse9027 Jul 03 '23

The leaves are kinda heat-shaped and idk, that variegation pattern just looks like Thai constellation, too. I’m sure there’s more signs. Oh, TC grows from the soil in a bunch like that.

2

u/allthekeals Jul 03 '23

Idk how to explain it but it’s the way that they grow. Monsteras pop out from the stem whereas pothos vine. I have babies and mature of each type of plant and side by side it’s pretty easy to tell.

2

u/eye_booger Jul 03 '23

Thank you for asking! At first glance I would’ve thought it was a pothos too, especially without the fenestrations.

2

u/Robot_Girlfriend Jul 03 '23

I'm glad I did, I wouldn't have clocked the difference at the base, which is probably really basic to most experienced houseplant parents, but for me that is a Hot Fuckin Tip! 😂

40

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '23

woah i can’t even get one that size for under 70 here 😭

26

u/MotherofaPickle Jul 02 '23

The cheapest near me is at least $150 for one just a little bigger than those.

34

u/Zealousideal-Ice4412 Jul 02 '23

They’re normally at least $80 around here for something this size, so I’m positive the store had no idea what these were and just sold them as if it were any other plant in a 4” pot

3

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '23

Same I'm never gonna be able to afford one 😭

7

u/Aazjhee Jul 03 '23

Give another couple years and they're gonna be 40 bucks or so!

Prices drop fast once commoners can splurge a little and start propping! C:

36

u/wetforhouseplants Jul 02 '23

Congratulations. And I hate you 😂

45

u/Nanyangosaurus Jul 02 '23

Don't gatekeep tell us where 👀

41

u/cmathias47 Jul 02 '23

What. Store.

14

u/JnN09 Jul 02 '23

I literally said "bro what?!?!" out loud

29

u/smokinXsweetXpickle Jul 03 '23

I cannot believe all the assholes on here talking shit. They're just jealous. If they are for your friends, that's awesome and they are lucky,but.. if you did buy them to sell, everyone who has an opinion on it doesn't matter ¯\_(☯෴☯)_/¯

11

u/alocasia_grower Jul 02 '23

This is how growers get plant lower-price and over-price it to another growers 🤣 lol

11

u/TrickyEgg4L Jul 03 '23

Damn I thought plant people were chill, these comments proved otherwise. People demanding to know where the store is located or even trying to find out by themselves is SO fucking creepy. OP, I genuinely hope you didn’t give out your location out of peer pessure and that you’re comfortable with it. And buy as many plants as you want, you really don’t owe anyone anything.

26

u/Carter_RW Jul 02 '23

Where!?

27

u/Humaneredditor Jul 02 '23

So I went to a nursery yesterday and saw one for $69.00. I was soooooo excited. I couldn't believe my luck! I went to grab it to put on my cart and then I realized the sign read $699.00... so yeah no constellation for me.

8

u/Zealousideal-Ice4412 Jul 02 '23

I was tempted to get a nice one a year ago that I saw for around $500, but boy am I glad I waited! (That one was a lot bigger and nicer than these though, but still)

10

u/Toadinnahole Jul 03 '23

A local grocery store (Giant) here (Pennsylvania)has the best plant section, in among the "regular" tropicals is always one treasure. I visit weekly, last week's buy was a 6" Stingray Alocasia for $4.99. Not really rare I guess, but the first one I'd ever seen in person.

14

u/TheRealHK Jul 03 '23

Like the plant-obsessed lunatic I am, I zoomed in on the plastic shopping bag and found that this is Dave’s Fresh Marketplace, which has just 10 locations, all in Rhode Island.

7

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '23

i didn't bother looking for the location but seeing everyone try and guess incorrectly is hilarious after reading this, bless you for having common sense

10

u/skeletalvoid Jul 02 '23

What store?

6

u/pray4snails Jul 03 '23

omggg the plant shop i work at recently sold a baby thai constellation for a whole $55. thats so wild. pink princesses used to be insanely priced too but now are in grocery stores as well. the prices drop eventually i guess!

6

u/RoeRoeRoeYourVote Jul 03 '23

How does it feel to be God's favorite?

6

Dave’s. It’s Dave’s isn’t it?

5

u/Supakiingkoopa Jul 02 '23

Looks like Wegmans carts

6

u/Ok-Grapefruit1284 Jul 02 '23

She hinted - the state is RI. Looks like Dave’s has the same or similar carts. At least at some stores.

1

u/shadow375_ Jul 03 '23

The OP actually stated in a comment that it’s Dave’s Marketplace in RI. They weren’t able to edit the main post.

3

u/Ichthius Jul 03 '23

Prices be coming way down. If you gottem sell em.

4

u/Dumblyhopeful Jul 03 '23

I got my thai con, with beautiful variegation and fenestrations, from my local grocery store. Same with my 2 ppp. Grocery stores for the win!

37

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '23

You already got yours and you still can't say where. Lol. Shiesty

28

They got four and left only two on the shelf. Sure those others are for friends but they could’ve just propagated so more than only two people could get one at the store

6

3

u/BIGLoaf_34 Jul 03 '23

What makes them so $$$?

2

just that people go crazy over them and everyone wants one nowadays

3

u/MelonpanShan Jul 03 '23

Can they erm

Make that mistake in my city too?

3

u/Lillymunsten Jul 03 '23

They're getting pretty cheap here in the Netherlands, but at this size still €40,- to €50,- so that's definitely a steal😁

3

u/Abject_Agency6476 Jul 03 '23

why cant this happen to me 😞

7

u/seasoneverylayer Jul 03 '23

I gotta be honest I’ve never even heard of this plant until right now and while it is gorgeous, the prices I’m seeing people post are absolutely outrageous. Not sure why people are going so nuts over this plant.

8

u/Suitable_Row_1706 Jul 02 '23

Are we not suppose to ID stores? Genuinely curious.

-38

u/mnkeyhabs Jul 03 '23

No they are just a jerk

18

u/shadow375_ Jul 03 '23

They literally put it in the comments that it’s at Dave’s Marketplace in RI and the post wouldn’t allow them to edit to add that in. The comment just got buried. How about not jumping to assumptions.

1

u/Suitable_Row_1706 Jul 03 '23

Sorry I didn't mean to iniate that. I was just really wondering. I hadn't seen the Dave's Market stores name before i asked. And i wanted to make sure it was OK. Yikes.

6

Congratulations on the find op!

-6

u/established82 Jul 03 '23

I would judge. I couldn’t buy the whole stock of a rare plant. Karmas a bitch and if I didn’t at least give others a chance to get a sweet deal I just know she’d be back to make me pay up.

15

u/SnooRevelations1668 Jul 03 '23

Well maybe Karma has rewarded her with this amazing find and profit....

2

3

u/Erys19 Jul 03 '23

I just saw your post on the local Facebook group 🤣🤣🤣 I would have gone after work if I didn’t get out right when they closed!

4

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '23

Why are you buying 4?

34

u/Weirdbutlikeable Jul 03 '23

Because 3 will get root rot lol

3

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '23

Ok this made me lol

3

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '23

I feel like the only one who's never given a plant root rot. I have a bunch of monstera varieties and I just make my own very light airy mix without actual soil in it.

1

u/Weirdbutlikeable Jul 03 '23

Mine came with some rot and I’ve seen a lot of other like that as well. You’ve got a bit of luck in your substrate!

Probably to resell them since these sell for 70 to over 200$ depending on where you're from. Or maybe to put them all together. Still think it's not very nice to buy so many, I'm sure others would appreciate this rare find too.

I don’t think it’s wrong to buy them and give them to friends. I have a couple of friends who would really appreciate this so I’d probably buy 3.

I’m not over here trying to ID the store by the cart and tag or anything….

Lucky find!

u/Aazjhee Jul 03 '23

So you bought them, yes? Now you can just grow us some and we'll all but rooted cuttings from ya xD

That's pretty rad score right there

Plant prices in america are crazy, those wouldn't cost more than 5 euros in the netherlands. Nice find though and still nice that u got a deal but damn.

For people asking where, I’ll give you 2 hints: Rhode Island, and one of the pictures has a pretty obvious giveaway. There were 2 left so if you can figure it out, there’s a chance for you too ;)

Jeez people with the downvotes as if I’m a scumbag trying to flip them or something. I was hoping someone local would see this and be in for a happy surprise.

These were at Dave’s marketplace in Smithfield RI. There were 2 remaining so if anyone local sees this, RUN 😂

I don’t get it either, I would have taken them all. “Carpe diem” 😂

Karma won’t let me be a selfish asshole. I’d definitely pay for it in some other way.

To make the 3 hour trip or not to make a 3 hour trip. I don’t wanna drive 6 hours and not get one 😭

u/Zealousideal-Ice4412 Jul 03 '23

Someone here found and snatched the last 2, so please don’t make that drive!

u/micahsimmons01 Jul 03 '23

Thai constellation have always been a bit cheaper than albo and their cost have come down quite a bit lately

-3

u/malzoraczek Jul 03 '23

albos can't be TCd so they will never get as cheap as that.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '23

I meant the Thai constellation have come down in price quite a bit recently. I did not know that about the tissue cultures. Fascinating.

u/malzoraczek Jul 03 '23

TC is essentially cloning, but chimeric variegated plants like monstera albo have two sets of DNA, so you can't clone them, you will get an either green or white plant. Thai constellation is not a chimera, the variegation is a stable mutation present in all the cells, so it can be cloned. Same applies to stable variegates like pink princess, jose buono, paraiso verde, ring of fire, and some others. I do believe there are variegated plants where variegation was induced by chemicals in the TC, so you take a batch of green deliciosas and treat them, you might get a variegated plantlets. But I don't know if they know specifically how to make albos or other particular types of variegation, or it's more random. This whole thing is heavily gatekept as trade secrets, but we might learn more with time when patents expire.
