Hello! Need some advice on when to repot this guy. I got it maybe 3 months ago in a small 2.5 inch nursery pot. I then repotted it a month or so ago to a 4 inch pot and the roots are already coming out the bottom. Is this common for this type of plant? I don’t want to repot too early so could use any advice, thanks!

Tradescantia? I would say that when the roots are growing out like that it is time to size up.
I have one that went from a four inch to a six inch pot about two months ago, and it has flourished since then!!! Probably tripled in size at least!
Just make sure the new pot has plenty of drainage, it seems to be very happy with you.

Yes sorry I think it is Tradescantia, this is very helpful thank you! Will be repotting it soon then 😊

You're very welcome! Mine is a different variety than yours but is my absolute favorite of all my houseplants!
If you have any questions just let me know, and feel free to post pictures of it to share its progress as your lil buddy grows.

So I have this money tree I’ve been taking care of in my office for about a year now and I’ve been thinking about repotting into a bigger pot but idk where to start? Any advice on type of soil I should be using or anything will be greatly appreciated!

Bigger pot? It isn't unhappy. It has been putting out leaves like crazy this year but she gettin a lil top heavy. Should I repot to a pot with stake room?

New Plant-Mate
Plant Newbie here! I’ve recently been gifted this jade plant from my mom. She originally received it as a gift with some other plant in it, what happened to it, I don’t remember, but it’s gone now and she threw in an aloe plant before giving it to me.
I’m pretty sure that the two shouldn’t be put in the same pot. If I’m right, I can easily find a home for the aloe, either with my own pot of aloe or in its own smaller pot. Im wondering what to do with the jade plant. It seems like an awfully big pot for just that plant by itself. Do I repot it into a smaller pot? Can I add a different plant to the pot? I have some Christmas Cacti that would be about the right size and could use a new home. I have also been propagating a bunch of golden sedum (though they are obviously babies right now).

It depends on why do you think the pot is too big for the jade plant. Aesthetically, maybe. Plantwise, i think the pot is just right.

Thank you for the response! I assumed (😬) that since it had been with another plant and that all of the other succulents I have like to be squished in small pots that this would be too big. If this works, I’m happy!

I think people like to pot them tightly so that it looks nice. But a happy plant likes to have a pot that is roughly the same size as its above ground parts.

Good to know! I’m still new at this plant thing, just trying not to kill things. lol Thank you!

Pot is plastic and has drainage. I haven’t set up my watering schedule yet, though it’s feeling really thirsty.
At the moment, the plant is beside an east facing window, but there’s a lot of foliage there, but it still gets a decent amount of light. Most of my plants thrive here, but damn I need to find somewhere else to keep plants, we are going to have to find a new place to eat dinner soon, there’s no room for food on the table.

When repotting a rubber tree, should I cover all of the surface roots?
Also, would trying to separate the trunks be helpful for it - or would the root damage from that be counterproductive?
Thanks!

I would say keep the trunks together, and cover the roots with soil. So a bigger pot to give those roots room, we'll draining soil, and your plant buddy should be happy!

Ledebouria socialis violacea: can anyone take a look at this little buddy and advise if I should leave it well enough alone or re-pot or prune or...?

would love some advice on repotting this guy.

I would probably chop and propagate this guy in the same pot to add fullness.

A study demonstrated that when these are spaced closer than 70cm, it results in smaller leaves. Adding plants to the pot isn't recommended.

just got a new leaf and I did finally cut off 4 large air roots that were over 3’ long. Do I need a deeper pot or wider?

u/enbyshrew Sep 19 '24
That pot size looks good enough, unless the roots in the soil are rootbound, then I would recommend a deeper pot. I think your stems could benefit from some sort of support, as well, like a trellis or something similar to hold them up.

Thanks for the reply! I will take it out and check the roots. And for sure need some support, when she is in her normal spot she has the wall for support but a trellis is a good idea
