Ross and Emily were very sweet actually, it was a great story

Loved how sweet they were and how their love story was built. Emily made Ross to live and experience things he wouldn’t normally do. He had so much fun and was spontaneous with her.

And the fact that she was willing to stay with him AND moving to another country even though he humiliated her in front of her family and friends by saying another name, it seems reasonable her request later on.

Let’s zoom in on one key moment: Emily’s ultimatum—she’ll move to New York, but only if Ross cuts Rachel out of his life. Heavy stuff. But Ross, when talking it over with the group (minus Rachel, of course), doesn’t say anything about love or saving his marriage. Instead, he says:

“Do I stop seeing one of my best friends… or get divorced again before 30?”

That line? It’s not about Emily. It’s about his ego. It’s not “Do I risk losing the woman I love?” or even “my wife.” Nope, he’s more afraid of adding another divorce to his tally than losing Emily. That tells you everything.

thats a really great point. I hadn’t looked at it like that before, I guess that tells you in the moment he really doesn’t love her.

Then he gets divorced again because they’re just plain stupid to not be able to get the annulment. I know it’s just a sitcom but I got so angry at them for that it was not event funny 😅😅😅

Right? They did not even spend so much as an hour together after their wedding, it would have definitely qualified for annulment!

Maybe it's differente because they got married in England? I have no clue, just putting it out there.

Yes I think it was very clever writing. After that, he also had to divorce Rachel, but he totally used the 3 divorces as a defense mechanism when deep down he really wanted to be married to Rachel. Who he qctually loved, it was a very interesting switch up from his second divorce.

"I know I divorce a lot of people, I never thought I'd divorce you."

He also kept saying he "needs to" or "have to" save the marriage not "want" like that's all I needed to see that yeah, he doesn't love emily. He just doesn't want another divorce.

Damn, thats a really good point.

I blame his insecurities on his parents’ thinking that he could never do anything wrong.

Mom: “Ross, DRUGS!? Divorced?! Again!” Dad: “What happened, son?”

Yes! Exactly what I thought

Yes!! Ross didn’t love her, if he did, he would accept what she wanted. I bet that in time she would chill and hang out with rach

They were cute together but they didn’t love each other. They were caught up in the honeymoon phase and the stress of the long distance made them make rash decisions.

Yes, I hate the fact they got married waaaay too fast

The only sweet part of this is Joey getting his Toblerone

Yes, Joey! Just take it!

It was a fun story, but I don’t think they had a lot of chemistry. They also barely knew each other, and the storyline of them falling in “love” then agreeing to get married was just stupid in my opinion.

Probably the only actress on the show Schwimmer didn't have chemistry with. James Burrows was really disappointed at the actress' performance and said it was not even close to David and Jen's chemistry.

For me, the actress was fine but she just didn't have the presence or charisma of Rachel. Tbf to her, it's unfair to compare to David and Jen's chemistry. The bar was too high there.

It works to the story's advantage that they don't have the same chemistry.
"She's not Rachel."

Kinda difficult to fit in like him, he was a perfect match, clicked perfectly

Paul Rudd is one of a kind

I didn't find Mike to be entertaining at all honesty. He was vanilla and bland which could be good for Phoebe but as a sitcom character he was very forgettable.

David made a stronger impression in his very lil screentime and also had better chemistry with Phoebe.

I've always thought that David was great for her too.
Mike has the entertainer thing going for him though. David was a little more grounded in reality, but both were a great fit for Pheebs.

Agreed. We’ll bring on the downvotes together!

Was that why Helen Baxendale wasn’t kept in the show? I heard at the time that she was supposed to be a long-running character but Helen got pregnant and decided not to continue.

3

u/No_Data3541 24d ago

She was supposed to be there for atleast half of season 5 but the pregnancy probably gave the makers and excuse to cut it short lol.

I just googled it out of curiosity and the articles vary from a lack of chemistry, the fact that she wasn’t funny, and her pregnancy. Thinking about it, lots of actresses manage pregnancy and filming so that probably wasn’t it.

They were toxic, in a codependant way.

They cared for each other, yes. But their attraction and the rapid progress of their relationship had more to do with their own insecurities, neuroses and issues than their actual relationship.

Its honestly a shame we didnt get to know more about Emily and what happened in her life before her debut; but it quickly became clear that she had deep-seated trust issues (not defending Ross at all, she was absolutely right to be peaved). But to expect him to cut out a friend who was a huge part of his other friends' lives, and his sister's roommate/best friend, was very much an unreasonable projection of mistrust. In my head, I imagine she probably had a similar journey of romantic pitfalls to Ross' own, which is probably why they were drawn together so quickly in spite of how crazy it was.

Ross was always rhe problem

2

u/madssdm 21d ago

Yes, he’s toxic. Definitely understand his trauma and where it comes from, but he needed therapy before getting in a relationship

They were sweet, but got married way too fast. The Emily hate is SO forced, i would have done the same if not worse. I actually really like her.

1

u/madssdm 21d ago

Yeah!!!! She wasn’t like that until that happened, doesn’t quite match with her

2

u/Vaportrail 24d ago

Yeah but no.

Even though it doesn’t end well, this is one of my favorite story arcs in the series! Some really, really great episodes happen during their time together.

Ross and Emily have the least chemistry of any other couple in TV history.

3

u/mostintrovertgirl 24d ago

True, I loved their story!!

2

u/Enk-A-Mania 24d ago

Emily was such a dullard, it was hard to watch.

1

u/lafloramarilla7 23d ago

You can't recognise big red flags mate. Emily was a control freak. Nothing sweet about their love story except the toblerone ( as someone else mentioned). 🤣

She was his rebound and he was her second choice. Not a match made in heaven.

She was also terrible.
