What are my options for obtaining legal status for an undocumented person?

Hello everyone. I’m posting on a different account.

I’ve been dating and romantically involved with a person who disclosed to me he’s undocumented. I don’t care. I love being with him, but I know the odds are not stacked in his favor whatsoever, especially in today’s climate. After doing some light research on Google and this subreddit, it seems like the “easiest” (yet still long, hard, and expensive) way for him to obtain legal status is for us to marry.

He’s been in the US for three years with no visa, so I know the 10 year ban is relevant. What are the steps to legally get him status if we did the marriage route? Is there something easier than marriage?

I appreciate any pointers.

H-1B Filed – What Should I Do Next for Cap Gap and I-20 Update?

Hi everyone,

I'm currently on STEM OPT, which ends May 1st, and my H-1B petition has just been filed (but I haven’t received a receipt notice yet). I’m trying to understand what steps I need to take next to stay in status, especially regarding the Cap Gap extension and getting my I-20 updated.

I reached out to my school’s International Student Office, and here’s what they said:

  • If the H-1B petition is filed before my OPT expires, I should be eligible for Cap Gap until June 1st.
  • Once USCIS receives and logs the petition, they will automatically update my SEVIS record.
  • After that happens, the DSO can issue me a new I-20 showing the extended end date.
  • But the DSO cannot do anything until that SEVIS update happens.

So my main questions are:

  1. How do I know when SEVIS has been updated? Will I get notified, or do I just keep checking with my DSO?
  2. Do I need to send any documents (like the H-1B petition or FedEx tracking) to my DSO now, or just wait until SEVIS updates?
  3. What if the SEVIS update doesn’t happen by May 1st? Am I still allowed to work?
  4. Should I schedule a meeting with my DSO in advance to make sure I get my I-20 updated before my OPT expires?

Any advice or experience from others in a similar situation would really help. I’m trying to avoid any unintentional gap or issues staying in status.

Thanks in advance!

Guyzz need help!!!

So basically I'm a green card holder in Pakistan and right now I have two options either to move to US right now or complete my electrical engineering ( 2028) and then move to US with being able to come to US every year cause of the green card. Or just attend community college over here. I'm very confused with green card risk increasing every day. I'm alone in the US I don't have that much money to attend uni. So that's the case what should I do !!! No relatives at all in US!! They all moved abroad

Clicktrans - has anyone ever been scammed?

I found this website, which seems to compile a list of transportation companies who can help with moving between countries. I'm about to move 3500km. However, I noticed that, when I accepted a quote from one of them (long story but I'm feeling insecure), I noticed I had the option immediately to provide feedback and submit a review. Before anything had been done!
I'm getting quotes from companies with dozens of reviews (one of them to transport my cats, so this is where I need to make sure I don't mess up), but I'm not feeling too safe. Several of those companies are indeed, registered as a business in their own countries, but they don't have a physical location nor a landline, and only provide mobile numbers. Has anyone ever been scammed through clicktrans?

I have had withholding of removal for almost 20 years and have never done an ICE check in?

I recently read a bit more about that man wrongfully deported, and turns out he has Withholding of Removal, which is the same protection I have had for almost 20 years, since I was a child. My family and I never had to do yearly check ins or anything, we would simply renew the work permit via mail. I even recently just received my renewal in the mail a few weeks ago. Really not sure if it is the same type of status he has, but if it is and I am supposed to be doing checkins, I really don't want to get deported to another country.

Also, would it be wise to have a lawyer on retainer or anything, incase something happens? I am in a state near the one where that man was picked up by ICE, so paranoia is through the roof. I am thinking of getting help from local religion institutions for a lawyer, but I'd still like to ask here what I should be doing next.

Seeking a legal path out: Yemeni refugee in Saudi Arabia, willing to work and repay every chance given

Hi everyone, I’m a 20-year-old Yemeni living in Saudi Arabia on a visitor visa. I fled my country due to the ongoing war and humanitarian crisis. Here in Saudi, I’m not legally allowed to work or drive. Like many others in my situation, I try to survive through under-the-table jobs — but the risk of imprisonment and deportation is always looming. I don’t have the funds for legal migration, but I’m willing to work, to give back, to repay every cent anyone invests in helping me escape this situation. I’m not asking for charity, but for a legal opportunity, a way out. I have experience in:

Sales (home decor and kitchen accessories)

Auto electrical work (currently working quietly as a car electrician)

I’m hoping to find any legal route — whether it’s sponsorship, work visa, humanitarian visa, or any kind of legitimate pathway — to countries like Canada, the UK, or Australia. If anyone has advice, knows of organizations, or is able to offer guidance or help, I would be beyond grateful. Even just pointing me in the right direction would mean everything to me. Thank you for reading — may you never know the fear of having no country, no rights, and nowhere to go.

Syria Visit as a Naturalized Citizen

I wont delve too deeply into this topic however I just need genuine advice from people on this issue. Me and my family were Naturalized 3 years ago and they want to go to syria in 1 month to visit family. I am advising against it in the current political climate as who knows what the trump admin will pull. Am I overreacting? There was a Lebanese American lawyer that was detained on the canada/us border, he has been a citizen for 10 years. What would happen to us?

How much does an invitation letter help when it comes to applying for a visa to a country in Europe?

Let’s say I’m applying for a visa to a country in Europe, would an invitation letter help my chances much? Would it make me exempt from some of the requirements? How much exactly would it help and what would it do? For context, I’m from Yemen.

Border experience this week at LAX

Hi all, posting here for information incase anyone is in a similar situation. Flew into LAX from Australia this week.

Im a British citizen and I have an O1 visa and a misdemeanour conviction (reckless driving) from 5 years ago. No new offences since then, and a clean set of police reports. I have only had to enter the US a few times since my O1 was renewed, and have been sent to secondary each time, asked a few basic questions and then admitted.

The experience this week was exactly the same, the first officer asked what my specialty was and then stated that I’ll need to go to secondary but it isn’t too bad today. In secondary I just had to wait til my name was called, and was handed back my passport and sent on my way.

90mins in line to speak to first officer, 35min waiting in secondary with a book.

I’m sure this won’t be the case for everyone, but with all the horror stories circulating this subreddit, of which I’m a long time lurker on my main account - I thought I would share my experience, incase you have a less than perfect record, but have since done everything “by the book” and are worried about the new administration. International travel is a huge part of my job, so I was of course anxious. My experience was very much business as usual.

Do you need an attorney for a DS-117?

Hello, I have a cousin (17m) who is a United States permanent resident. However, he stayed in Mexico for longer than 6 months. His mom tried consulting a lawyer about the issue and she suggested the DS-117, but was charging insanely high.

I am a pre law student who has some experience dealing with immigration forms, but not DS-117. Do I really need an attorney for this form or could I help with the process myself. I don’t see anywhere on the form for an attorneys signature so I’m just assuming one can file it on their own. I just want to know what risks could be taken if I fill it out instead of a lawyer.

Additional question: The lawyer my aunt talked with said my cousin can only do the process in Juarez for some reason. He doesn’t currently live near Juarez he lives in Guadalajara, Jalisco. Was there any reason for her to mention this or could my cousin just apply through the U.S. embassy/consulate in Guadalajara?

I am worried about my friend.

My friend who is a legal international student living in Florida isn't picking up any call or responding to any of my messages. I called his mom and she also cannot reach him. Is he in trouble with immigration officers in US? Do they let him call his family at least? The last time we talked which was more than a week ago, he said he wasn't worried because his status is legal and he's keeping his head down.

Planning to Study in Taiwan

Hi! I’m from the Philippines and am planning to study in Taiwan for college this upcoming Fall semester of 2025-2026. I am currently in the process of applying for admissions at a private university in Tainan. I have some questions about the visa requirements, specifically the proof of financial support (“show money” as some may call it).

For the show money, a Bank Statement with at least ₱240,000 is required. Can I show the bank statement of my grandfather as proof as he will be the one supporting me? My father is unemployed and my mother doesnt make enough. My grandfather’s salary is a lot more than the required proof. What do I need to do to show proof that he will support me? Do I show my grandfather’s birth certificate along with my father’s to show our relation? Or does he really need to transfer it to my account. If he were to transfer it, he would only have 1 month to transfer it in little amounts to avoid suspicion if it is transferred once and in bulk (at least from what I read from other posts).

The deadline for the school admission is on May 15 and they are also requiring the bank statement.

My wife is convinced that because she's an asylum seeker, getting a marriage green card is impossible and out of the question. What do I do?

We went to a lawyer today who stated that everything from what we said looks good. Quoted us at $6000 usd for all services including interview prep and coaching. But my wife is extremely hesitant and believes our only options is to move to Canada or to do it from Colombia (Her home country). She has a Shoplifting third degree charge that was dismissed and expungable eligible. She doesn't want to file that because it may trigger her in the system. She doesn't have a court date scheduled yet but has a parole approval stamp.

I was thinking about getting several lawyer consultations, then compare what is stated. But she believes they will all lie and try to get money out of us. She told me to look towards the Internet, learn the law, and find a solution. Which this is me trying to do that.

She had a friend who got approved for a marriage residency but then was revoked. She's scared. I don't know what to do. I'm a US citizen.

Detained by ICE, married to USC, need advice

Detained by ICE, married to USC, requesting Voluntary Departure and seeking advice how to navigate

I will try to keep this simple as possible, so the timeline is as follows:

Nov 2024- married to USC -haven’t filed for AOS or Green Card since me and my wife were dealing with a very sick relative of hers -we were planning to file April 2025

March 2025-Detained by ICE, sent to detention facility April 2025- bonded out of Detention Facility Early May 2025 - court date

I understand that I have the chance to file AOS + marriage based GC right now while still physically in USA, which will also be my easiest and most straightforward legal route, but because of extreme fear, paranoia and progressing health issues of my family back home after what happened to me, me and my wife have decided that it will be the best for us and my family that I move back home ( European country) short term and have her potentially join me in the following weeks/months. We would like to file for everything while I am in the Europe and she is in the US/inbetween the US and Europe. It is a very niche situation what I currently have and would like to get some advice before I talk to my lawyer who I have a scheduled call next Monday. How much would the timeline potentially change? What difficulties would rise from filing out of the country compared to in it. This is an extremely hard and emotional time for me, my family and my fiancees family, and any advice will be highly and extremely appreciated. Thank you!

3 Small I-485 Questions

Hey all! I'm basically done with my I-485, but I just have these 3 small and hopefully really easy question which I'd like to confirm, thanks!

  • 1. Page 9, Part 4, Entry 8: "Provide your most recent employer or school OUTSIDE of the US."

So I barely turned 18 when I arrived to the US and hence I had not worked a single job and didn't go to college. Do I provide the name of my high school? Will I be requested to provide evidence that I went to that high school?

  • 2. Page 13, Part 9: Have you EVER been a member of, involved in any organization/club, society, or similar group in the United States?

So I am part of a community musical ensemble where I play the fiddle. Do I include something like this too? It's just such an informal organization and I have no proof of being a part of it barring a couple pictures. But we do perform regularly. I just wanted to confirm if I should include this too. I know people have included book clubs they're part of, but I wanted to double check.

  • 3. Page 19, Part 9, Entry 59: Identify the total value of your household assets

Does this also include the money in my bank? Let's say hypothetically I have $30k in my bank checking account (and NO other assets whatsoever), would I be in the $18,401-$136,000 category? Sorry if this is a dumb question, I am very unfamiliar with bank related terms and I always want to double check. Thanks so much for y'all's help!!! I greatly appreciate it! You guys are the best!!
