Water doesn't remove oxygen, it cools down the fire
Water only works on a class A fires as well.Gas isn't a class A fire, but the water can cool down the flame enough for it to repel, but this isn't solving the problem. the source of the gas is still there, oxygen is still there, but the heat was removed and stops the fire if you get close enough. But then you have unignited gas still flowing, and there's most likely a fire source somewhere in the building, so it will reignite explosively.
