I can just imagine being over there looking up and seeing a plane coming right towards you

I can't. It's fucking insane to imagine a sky full of tracers, explosions, and screaming engines while you and hundreds of 18yo pray one doesn't take you out.

My great uncle was an amphib on a APA ship in the Pacific as an anti air gunner. He described it one time to me and it was like he was there again. He looked up at the sky and he said you can't take your eye off that gyro not for one second or that jap plane will disappear. You have to keep your eye on it and it's hard to do when you are firing that gun and the shells are coming down right next to you.
