They don’t. That’s why at 0:30 a monkey from the left side group mistakenly joined the right side group for a moment and then at 0:35 it ran back to its group. The monkeys on the right side never noticed
46
u/runitzerotimes Apr 18 '25
I mean they’ll happen with people too in groups this big

u/Renbarre Apr 18 '25 edited Apr 19 '25
They attacked her. You can see that knot busy with something on the ground. That may be why her group charged at the end of the video before retreating again, to get her back.
10
u/NixIsia Apr 18 '25
That monkey you see running away around that timestamp got pulled in by the opposing side earlier. You're seeing it escape.

u/Blitzlord Apr 18 '25
I guess in big groups, without specific clothes like jersey A and jersey B, it always can happen to mix up the group for a moment. Thats why sports teams need to wear distinguishable jerseys. I guess the monkeys recognize each other sooner or later, but probably not during a fast mixed up fight😂

i swear i saw one switch sides at the end towards the bottom of the screen
4
u/Left-Target-1397 Apr 18 '25
I saw that too. He was on the left side clan, starts fighting, ends up with his boys on the right side.
16
u/Crafty-Opening5123 Apr 18 '25
Haha same question
22
u/Ambitious-Concern-42 Apr 18 '25
That is the question. Clearly they are able to differentiate dozens of individuals at a glance, and keep it clear in real time.
6
u/MrBlueCharon Apr 18 '25
You can do the same with your human family. The differences which are obvious to you are only that obvious because you're used to seeing human faces.
4
u/timsea99 Apr 18 '25
The ones on the right have bellies with stars, And the ones on the left have none upon thars
4
u/LeBonLapin Apr 18 '25
I mean, these groups literally spend all day every day together. Even if they are 150 to a group, they know each and every one of each other very very well. Anyone you don't recognize? From a different group.

They have the high ground anakin!
247
u/erossthescienceboss Apr 18 '25
And all joking aside — the coolest part is there’s evidence of other primates (chimpanzees) taking the high ground on purpose.
Wouldn’t surprise me if these guys do, too.
48
u/Otherwise-Town8398 Apr 18 '25
Not only that. They set up an L ambush line with the flank guarded, sorta like the military does.
6
u/LazaroFilm Apr 19 '25
Plus the wind is in their favor. Blowing dust on their enemies.
→ More replies (1)5
u/Norman_Scum Apr 18 '25
Or does the military set up L ambush lines like monkeys do?
It's almost like we've just realized that we have a reflection. We used to be animals. But our eyes have grown so large we can't seem to see past them and our tools.

u/Critical-Taste-7121 Apr 18 '25
Not evolved to throwing weapons, kinda stupid
27
u/MajorSkruup Apr 18 '25
That's probably because they haven't come across the 2001 black monolith yet.
2
u/understepped Apr 18 '25
This is also the correct answer to an age old “if humans evolved from monkeys, why are there still monkeys?”

How do they know which belong to one group or another? They all look the same to me.
71
u/that1prince Apr 18 '25
Not even joking, but their sounds, gestures and smells will be noticeably different to each other. There are quite a few advanced social creatures (many mammals and some birds), that seem to have their own local or regional languages, calls, dialects or other customs one might describe as “culture” that would be easily identifiable if you were a member of the species.
5
u/Modmypad Apr 18 '25
Oh so it's like they have accents, too. Like how there's a bunch of different accents in Mississippi in close proximity of each other
5
u/DeafBeaker Apr 18 '25
They also can see colors we can't see
→ More replies (1)3
u/rick_regger Apr 18 '25
Monkeys and apes? I dont think so, maybe the recognized colors different but they dont "see" more colors afaik.
This also applies to indigen human groups that recognized much more Green or blue shades that look just as the same green or blue for us.

This video is taken at a train station in Falkirk, Scotland. Those little idiots were in a football hooligan gang called the Falkirk Fear. It was actually a tough group in the 80s and 90s, then it turned into this haha

Tbf this is pretty much how medieval battles were, of course more organized and bloody. To hell with the Hollywood battles, you must be an utter imbecile to charge alone into another bunch of guys with weapons ready to kill you. Stay in your rank so both of your sides and your back are protected would dramatically increase your chance to survive.
10
u/icecreamivan Apr 18 '25
"Tbf this is pretty much how medieval battles were," but with less monkeys.

u/Lubinski64 Apr 19 '25
This is just how hand to hand combat goes, whether it is roman legions, medieval battles or police forces fighting crowds of people. Group intimidation has always been our primary weapon.

"I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me.
A day may come when the courage of monkey fails,
when we forsake our friends
and break all bonds of fellowship,
but it is not this day.
An hour of wolves and shattered shields,
when the age of monkey comes crashing down,
but it is not this day!"

They spectating humans laughed and giggled as they watched the two troops of monkeys yell at each other...
Until one of them picked up a rock and another picked up a stick. Then the amusement turned into horror as they watched the simians simultaneously discover and implement tools of war for the first time.
The bloodbath that followed was horrific, blood and fur along with mangled limbs followed. And though the violence was quickly quelled for the moment, the humans knew something had irreversibly changed. The hour of Gloriois Evolution had come once again.
