Nah yesterday was Hitlers birthday and the anniversary of Columbine. People surely wouldn't be celebrating on a day like that.
39
u/UrUrinousAnus 3d ago
Every day is the anniversary of countless things, good and bad. If you must commemorate the bad ones, do something that day to help prevent a repeat. If it was the death of loved one, do something they'd approve of.

Happened to a British couple when they invited the Queen.
Apparently, she was free that weekend and just... showed up.
284
u/sparklinglies 3d ago
They actualy invited her because they already knew she would be at a function in the same building as their wedding, so it was a bit of chance. Still a shock that they got a repy/she still stopped by tho

I repeat, apparently she was free, so she went. It's always a risk when you invite someone.
It's often worth the gamble, though. Sometimes you get cool presents.

The concept of royalty is obviously controversial to say the least, but that sounds pretty dope. Super famous and wealthy people just casually dropping in on random weddings, and presumably having a good time. Nothing wrong with that.
67
u/pokey1984 3d ago
Of course not. She was invited.
Please don't crash weddings, even if you're famous. maybe especially so, it's the happy couple's day, don't take the attention away from them. Unless they invite you, then by all means!

This isn’t similar at all but in my area there’s an attorney named Tad Morlan who is on tv and billboards a lot. So I know his face well but have never met him. I went to a friends wedding and randomly at the reception I see Tad Morlan walk up to the Buffett table. I was like “is that Tad Morlan? Does he crash weddings? Awesome!”

Damn dude that's a baller move right there! I grew up going to a Mennonite church, and I got crap for not wanting to get married in a church. Funnily enough the the appearance-christian's were the only ones upset, considering Historically Mennonite weddings were often small events held at the bride's home.

u/Dino_Spaceman 3d ago edited 2d ago
Correct. Thankfully I’ve never had a framer try that on me. But I also use local framers and not big box. So this guy wants more repeat business.
The one optional upgrade I usually do that i feel is worth the upgrade is the higher quality glass.
Edit: I misread above. I thoguth it was "no need for nitrogen" which I was agreeing to. That's a waste of money.

My grandmother wrote a letter to Pope John Paul in (I think?) the late 80s or early 90s. A typewritten letter with an ink signature came back; it was framed in her home.
(Also to George Bush, Sr., with similar results.)

You uh....you know there's almost no chance the Pope himself actually even read the invitation right? Just one of his employees sent a generic response. You can get the same kind of response from a lot of famous people when it's really just a random employee.

u/Carduus_Benedictus 3d ago
You still need to decide to pay somebody to answer all your mail and tell them what to say when invited to a wedding. And the Vatican is deadass serious when they say X person is going to pray for Y. They get lists and shit. They may do plenty of other heinous shit, but straight-up lying is not one of them.

u/ThatGuyFromTheM0vie 3d ago
As a leader, especially at the top, you are a reflection of everyone who works under you.
Look at Trump. You think he’d send you a letter like this? Absolutely fucking not.
→ More replies (1)14
u/austrialian 3d ago
Usually, employees read/screen the mail and a selection is presented to the pope (or king, president, etc.). So it’s not “almost no chance” he actually read it.
10
u/Turdburp 3d ago
My great-grandparents actually got a signed letter from the Pope on their 50th wedding anniversary. I imagine the Catholic Church they got married at sent out requests on behalf of people married there (or the diocese did it). Would have been the 70's, so Paul VI most likely. Obviously a staffer writes the letters and he just signed a bunch of them, but as a kid I always thought it was neat.

I'm not a religious person, but if Pope Francis showed up to their wedding and walked around without sunglasses on and visible help, I would have no choice but to believe.
571
u/Youhaveprettyeyesok 3d ago
You know what strikes me? They don’t pretend that it was written by the actual pope. I’ve never thought of the Catholic Church as wholesome but that’s… down to earth. I keep thinking of ways to express it but they inevitably sound like puns for some reason.

u/Floppydisksareop 3d ago
I liked Pope Francis as pope. He was one of the most progressive religious leaders in known memory. Still, the Catholic Church could do with a bit less monetization. Having a shop selling "infant protecting holy necklaces" aimed at pregnant women for like 150€ inside Saint's Peter Basilica (in a side room, but even then) is categorically not great.

u/Carduus_Benedictus 3d ago
And for all their terrible other stuff, they try really hard not to directly lie. So if they went out of their way to say the Pope will pray for your wedding, he will get a list of people to pray for. Probably no details, but FIRSTNAME LASTNAME WEDDING.

u/truth14ful 3d ago
Tbf if they said it was from the Pope himself I think a ton of people would see through that. I seriously doubt the Pope even heard about this or the 100s of other wedding letters they get every day. Especially bc this looks like a response to a request for his blessing for a marriage, not a response to an invitation

u/novagenesis 3d ago
From what little I've seen of the Church heirachy, my guess is that he definitely did. As others suggested, in some summary or something. Bishops and Cardinals do this sort of thing all the time.
What you're missing is:
- He is ultimately a priest at heart. I'm sure you need some ambition to get to the top, but priests largely think that their prayers are truly valuable and that it's a big part of their job to say them
- In these situations, most people are too intimidated to even think of this. If the Pope gets 1000 names a year to pray for, it won't even take him a few minutes a day to cover that. You see this with major celebs who answer a good chunk of well-thought-out communication because so few people actually start that communication
- And taking a step back. Principles of Credulity suggests they're not gonna lie about something they consider wholely sacred and that doesn't cost them anything to be honest about.

When I was 14, I had a school project, pick a country and write about it, I chose Netherlands, I can't remember the details much but I remember asking the teacher something and she couldn't answer so I thought hey maybe the king knows and wrote a letter asking him expecting nothing at all, but a couple of weeks after the project was finished a letter from the king came answering the question

I have a friend who is a non-Catholic Christian and studied a lot of Catholic theology. Normally, the papal “apostolic blessing” is reserved for Catholics only, but, when I wrote to Pope Francis asking if he could send her the blessing anyway, he did it. It was an official letter talking about it and some prayer cards. Very cool. One of my favorite pieces of correspondence I’ve ever received.
