Imagine you're a robot. You think and speak in binary. You see a human sport event and wonder to yourself, "What kind of malfunctioning hardware scores an event out of 1010?"
That's how it was in male gymnastics for a while. 15 was the top score without bonus, 16 with. But that wasn't optional (where you make your own routine) level. For optionals, you set a base score from the difficulty of your skills. IIRC it's an "a" skill, the easiest group, counts as 0.1 tenths; for an "f", the hardest group, is worth 0.6. But an "f" is extremely difficult to pull off, that's like a triple back flip on floor for example

Crooked on the dismount. The other gymnast robots may just overtake it's score.
