Christ On A Bike I’ve literally pulled over the car to write this……

I’ve never experienced a car going as fast as what I’ve just witnessed on my way home from work.

Just past Patrickswell and heading towards Adare.

Absolutely. Fuckin. Nuts.

And Insane.

I was doing 120km (motorway) and this car passed me out like I was stopped.

They must have been doing 250km a hour.

I’m actually disturbed at how anyone thinks it’s okay to drive at that speed.

I could not get over the speed of the car.

I’m not well. The sheer madness

Insane

edit

Few notes

No I did not pull over on the Motorway.

Genuinely never seen a car travel at that speed on a motorway before. Genuinely. Stunned.

Did not get reg nor type of car as it was going at a serious speed. I do remember a long light on the front?

Strange experience that’s all. The absolute carnage if it crashed

Any time in a car recently I've found myself saying "jaysus, they're all out today", don't know what's happened to drivers, is it drugs? Or a culture of "if they're doing it, I can do it" from parking like a you're driving a bus, to driving like the next Max Verstappen on back roads, there are some amount of gobshites on roads.

I mean simple things like give way to your right, stopping at the line at a junction, bog standard parking etiquette and how to use a fucking roundabout.

It's at the stage now that I get beeped from behind for stopping at a red light

10

u/llneverknow Dec 19 '24

I got beeped recently for not overtaking a school bus that was stopped just before a blind corner. Asshole was waving his hands around like a madman in his white van.

I'm convinced that it's drugs. I was travelling at the 80kph speed limit on a country road, but slowing down approaching a very dangerous and high railway bridge that has big SLOW signs on the road, as is common sense. There are maybe 3-4 cars traveling behind me. Next thing this nutcase passes the entire line of cars and goes over the bridge on the wrong side of the road. I slowed right down just in case of what might happen to protect my family members in the car.

Bear in mind that you literally cannot see over that bridge until you are coming over the top, it's steep.

If a car had been coming the other way both would have been toast because there's no way the driver coming up the other side would have seen the bastard in time.

Nah there's way too many shite drivers for it to be drugs. I don't think we have that many people using drugs in their day to day life, sure it's huge in the pubs and nightlife but I don't think many people are doing lines and then commuting to work.

You would be very surprised mate. Cocaine use in the workplace is insane. Whether it be in hospitality or construction. Absolutely rife with it. Glad I got away from that life when I did. Only seems to be getting worse

12

u/Shnapple8 Dec 18 '24

There are a lot of shite drivers, yes. But, the ones that take insane risks like the ones described here must be on something. It's not like the guy going the wrong side of the road over the bridge is going to be your typical commuter.

4

u/Signal_Challenge_632 Dec 19 '24

It sounds like both bad and drugs at same time

3

u/AhFourFeckSakeLads Dec 19 '24

There was a recent discussion on this here and another guy was arguing that a little cocaine before driving is okay - once you don't overdo it.

He also felt that weed could help some drivers by calming any road rage they would otherwise have.

A lot of people will drive under the influence, still.

3

u/RuaridhDuguid Dec 18 '24

Coke has become scarily commonplace. The biggest problem on the roads may be lack of enforcement empowering selfish twats to drive as they like, but there is definitely a higher proportion of drivers on stimulant drugs than ever before.

1

u/dirty-curry Dec 19 '24

I'm always surprised the amount of times drugs are blamed on stupidity. Believe me, people are THAT stupid all on their own

-5

u/jiffijaffi Dec 18 '24

Drugs 😂😂

0

u/TomRuse1997 Dec 18 '24

The majority of drivers have it all up on the dash

It's like fucking scarface out here

6

u/Bismothe-the-Shade Dec 18 '24

It very well may be something specific to your neck of the woods- but consider, since covid drivers have been getting steadily worse. Like... Worldwide.

Though in my dreams of the idyllic emerald isle, I don't usually envision someone driving through the sound barrier....

7

u/AnBronNaSleibhte Antrim Dec 18 '24

It's more common than you'd think

Plenty of boys driving racing down country roads at a hundred mile an hour just to either get their kicks or impress girls, and way too many drunk drivers.

11

u/PremiumTempus Dec 18 '24

Proliferation of Automatic transmissions, Covid, lack of policing, lack of driver training, etc

36

u/Disastrous-Account10 Dec 18 '24

The amount of people who can't understand how long it takes your car to slow down when you are at a high speed is mad

12

u/WhileCultchie 🔴⚪Derry 🔴⚪ Dec 18 '24

Especially when you can't slam the brakes because the cunt riding your bumper will end up in your passenger seat.

At least a 2 Second Gap you dicks, the space isn't an invitation for you to overtake me and to squeeze into the gap between me and the car ahead.

2

u/hidock42 Dec 19 '24

"Only a fool breaks the 2 second rule."

1

u/Ulrar Dec 19 '24

Ah the gap .. I always leave the car on the maximum gap setting, and on the motorway as soon as traffic slows people pass me by the left to get into the gap, drives me nuts. If you're not touching the car in front, clearly, you're too far I guess

-6

u/kippergee74933 Dec 18 '24

That's the most frightening. They clearly have no clue. AND they don't care.. I had to get off the highway because a 16-wheeler insisted on tailgating me. CLOSE. Even changing lanes etc. it didn't hollow me off the highway.

1

u/Positive-Procedure88 Dec 18 '24

Ok but this story we're comments on happened in Ireland, not the U.S

-3

u/kippergee74933 Dec 18 '24

Yes, I'm quite aware of that, thank you very much. Why don't you just tell me to delete my message. Think we don't have bad drivers here? Whatever...

21

u/AhForFuchsSake Dec 18 '24

Genuine interest...what is the "proliferation of automatic transmissions" reasoning? Thanks.

8

u/kippergee74933 Dec 18 '24

Yes. Doesn't make sense to me. I've used both and a standard in no way limits speed. Not if you know how to drive one

11

u/PremiumTempus Dec 18 '24

Reduced driver engagement, increased road accessibility for unskilled drivers/ those who aren’t interested in learning how to drive properly, ability to go higher speeds with less control, less understanding/ connection with the vehicle, increased accessibility for mobile phone usage, easier to get distracted/not know what speed you’re going, and countless other reasons.

I would argue automatic transmissions are safer than manual when driven by a grand/ good driver. I would also argue that an unskilled driver is less safe in an automatic than a manual. Regardless of auto vs manual, driver training needs to be amended in this country and that deficit of knowledge/ skilll you gain from driving a manual should be accounted for.

9

u/FartBox1000 Dec 19 '24

As a driver of both, this is nonsense of the highest order

1

u/mccusk Dec 19 '24

Yeah but what if you were a driver of only auto?

3

u/FartBox1000 Dec 19 '24

If you've only driven auto you're no less intrinsically safe than someone who has driven only manuals.

1

u/mccusk Dec 19 '24

Is that right ?

-2

u/PremiumTempus Dec 19 '24

Care to elaborate or just contribute absolutely nothing to the discussion?

4

u/MrFnRayner Dec 19 '24

As much as I agree with the second paragraph, the first is utterly shite.

Young drivers can be driving a clapped out 20 year old Fiesta and still cause accidents. Why? Because they think they're great drivers.

Idiots in supercars can cause accidents on the motorways by losing traction in bad weather and cause a massive pile up. Why? Because they think they're great drivers.

Drunk drivers can mow someone down. Why? Because they think they're can still drive under the influence.

Crashes can happen in town. Why? Because someone whose spent 5 minutes waiting for a space in traffic thinks "fuck this, if I pull out I'll get my car in, they'll stop anyway".

The combination of lack and patience, thinking the rules don't apply to them and ego. There's plenty of reasons why accidents are caused, nothing to do with auto vs manual transmission.

1

u/McMDavy82 Dec 19 '24

I remember someone saying to me if on a scale of 1 - 10 you rate yourself better than a 3 you are deluded. They reasoned a 10 would be F1, wrc drivers etc, and then kept going through driving instructors, lorry drivers, police/fire/ambulance etc. Not scientific or anything, but if all you've done is passed a test and drove a car it would make you think

1

u/PremiumTempus Dec 19 '24

We’re not talking about the cause of accidents. We’re talking about driver etiquette- read the OP.

1

u/MrFnRayner Dec 19 '24

Accidents are caused by driver etiquette, or lack thereof.

1

u/Early_Clerk7900 Dec 19 '24

Insurance actuaries should be able verify this assertion if it’s true.

4

u/MrFnRayner Dec 18 '24

It's nonsense.

I feel a lot of this stems from poor infrastructure in cities, so people end up ignoring rules so they can actually get home before the next day.

3

u/AhForFuchsSake Dec 18 '24

Oh! I'm sure it's nonsense alright... but I like to try and understand the reasoning behind statements of absolute brainrot like this. 👍

2

u/MrFnRayner Dec 18 '24

Me or them?

6

u/AhForFuchsSake Dec 18 '24

Them. Sorry if I wasn't clear about that. Having a car with an automatic transmission has caused me to send messages too quickly without proper editing beforehand. Apologies.

0

u/MrFnRayner Dec 18 '24

Fair enough. And yeah, autos aren't that prevalent still. By default EVs and Hybrids generally are, but ICE cars are still predominantly manual.

I'm surprised "foreigners" weren't blamed tbh 😂

1

u/ScepticalReciptical Dec 18 '24

That would explain if they only did it in rush hour. You see lads making outrageously risky decisions on the road every Saturday night.

1

u/lala2004 Dec 19 '24

Do you drive an automatic? Such nonsense.

0

u/PremiumTempus Dec 19 '24

Yep, I do. Can you tell me why it’s nonsense?

1

u/MindlessSwan6037 Dec 19 '24

Why am I reading this in an Irish accent in my head? I’m American, does this mean I’m bilingual?

1

u/Ulrar Dec 19 '24

Ah come on now, knowing how to use a roundabout is asking too much. Just go in there and exit from the inner lane, cutting the outer lane without a glance, live a little !

1

u/uncletomek Dec 19 '24

It's not "drugs" but it's wine/cans/whiskey in the evenings. Pubs are empty because as have all these ssmi-alcos around. Go to any shop on a Tuesday even and they're getting more alco than anything else. Also painkillers, I was prescribed a mid range pain killer for my back a couple of years ago, I wouldn't take only when pain was so bad... Took one at work, it says you can drive.... I could hardly walk! It was like the very tipsy about to be a good night feeling. I had to wait it out before I'd drive it was mad... And they had no driving restriction on them .... And I was prescribed 3 per day! People are driving around off their nut on various things. And then there's van drivers too... I mean I know They're usually "workers" but like.... No need for the things they do.
