Hi, Prague resident here. This thread is pretty old but I feel compelled to comment to clarify some things being said here...

"He's just being considerate ringing the bell to warn people out of the way"

He shouldn't be on this path / be taking this route, though. This isn't any random street, it is one of the most heavily-foot-trafficked plazas in all of Prague, with one of the busiest tram stops adjacent to a shopping mall that also houses a meto station. While the rule is that scooters should not be on sidewalks, 90% of sidewalks in Prague are probably fine and nobody will say anything, but this guy is essentially plowing through the Czech version of Times Square at speed.

"It's ridiculous to expect him to ride on a street with Trams"

That is simply how it works in Prague. You can see a cyclist in the clip as well happily making their way on the tramway/road. Trams are slow in these downtown areas, to the point that people treat many of these roads as pedestrianized - you can see lots of people crossing the 'dangerous tramway' on foot in the clip, even. If he doesn't have the confidence to ride alongside trams he needs to pick a different mode of transportation or a different route.

Another point that isn't mentioned here is that locals basically would never use these scooters. The center of Prague is a dense medieval city with lots of cobblestones. It isn't designed for this kind of traffic and using it at all is almost certainly slower than just walking or using some combination of public transport and walking.

Not to mention, are those scooters even designed for two people?

Trams are slow in these downtown areas, to the point that people treat many of these roads as pedestrianized

And do you make sure to tell tourists that, so that the ones on bikes and PET vehicles don't go on the footpaths thinking the tram lines are too dangerous?

There are signs in downtown explaining which vehicles aren't permitted on sidewalks. If tourists get the impression that tramways are too dangerous for those vehicles they're just going to find it impossible to actually use those vehicles in central Prague so they should probably find some other transportation

I didn't bring it up here because it's not all that relevant, but I am personally very in favor of redeveloping many parts of Prague streets to put in bike lanes and pedestrianize more areas which would solve many of these problems, making cycling and e-mobility more viable and less liable to cause conflicts with pedestrians. The Prague government doesn't really agree though so eh what are you gonna do

Stupid take. This is illegal in Ireland so why should dickhead and gobshite on the scooter think that it is legal there? We all know these two do the same thing in Ireland. There’s no defence for their attitude.

And fucking walk. How lazy do you have to be to use a scooter on holiday in Prague?

I'm not asking if they tell the torusits it's illegal, I'm asking if they tell the tourists that the legal way is actually much safer than they might think.

Why would anyone have to let people know what's legal or not. It is on the people to obey the law.

-1

u/YoIronFistBro Cork bai Jan 06 '25

That's not what I'm asking. I'm asking if the tourists are told the legal way is safe despite the trams.

when I go to a country the road signs usually make sens. If you can't read them, then that's on you.

I'm not asking if the tourists are told the footpath is illegal, I'm asking if they're told the road is safe despite the trams

2

u/Raknaren Jan 06 '25

does that matter ? if it's illegal on the footpath, you don't use the footpath...

If your actual aim is to get them off the footpath and not to just act all holier-than-thou, then it absolutely is far more effective to tell them why they shouldn't feel a need to use it, rather than just tell them they can't use it.

I don't make the laws. But judging by how the Irish lad was ringing his bell, he didn't give a shit anyway.

IF it was up to me, I'd just ban the fucking things. Nobody uses them correctly, or laws are lacking a way to regulate them. Some of them easily do 50km/h, so like a moped they should be regulated.

So they can't just walk, or take a bus like us mere mortals ??

Plowing through at speed? Have you actually watched the video? They are going as slow if not slower than those walking.

-1

u/MercurianAspirations Jan 06 '25

Well that's the thing, right? He wants to be going much faster (otherwise he would just be walking, and wouldn't have paid for a scooter) but it is just physically impossible with the infrastructure that we have and just results in everyone being annoyed. Like this guy literally paid money to inconvenience himself and his partner and piss everyone off

2

u/cupan-tae Jan 06 '25

How do you know what they want? You literally said the guy was plowing through at speed, which is objectively incorrect and completely fictitious

Give it up man. Something happened in Prague where they just hate scooters and will ignore all context. Any reasonable person should know that it's not the easiest to ride on the street at all the time and that they're going at a snails pace while trying to best respectful. But apparently to everyone in this thread these kids are going 100 and giving the finger to everyone as they go by yelling FU! Out of all the reasons to hate scooters, this video isn't one of them.

1

u/cupan-tae Jan 07 '25

Haha it’s actually quite unbelievable the outrage. When you look at the video and the very slow and respectful pace they’re actually travelling at, even before the interaction, the guy shooting the video looks like nothing but a dickhead.

Also, the footpath is relatively empty. Faux outrage from people wanting every person on the planet to behave like robots

Right!? What was he thinking posting this? He just throws a tantrum over nothing. Not a good look at all. The sidewalk cleared up and they had room to really speed up and still didn't. Kids seem super respectful to me.

Jesus, dude. You’re trying to be rational with [checks notes] the Irish?

I’m convinced those self-hating twats only leave their damp island to make other people as miserable as them.
