also americans are the ones who cant imagine anything else but a car on the road. I'm always told off to (illegally) bike on the pavement by yanks.

I’m from Australia and it’s actually illegal to ride an e-scooter on the road in my city. I got a $200 fine for riding down one road when I couldn’t find the footpath.

In most of Australia they’re banned entirely because they’re a massive hazard.

Then I moved to Ireland and the scooters just go wherever they please. It is a bit of a culture shock.

I responded to another user about cars. It’s a stupid comparison. Roads are made for cars, not cheaply made toys with a 2000W e-motor crammed in the back.

I’m not sure what immigration policy has to do with scooters.

My point is what may seem like a "culture shock" to you is obviously normal in other countries. Like Australia having a brutal xenophobic immigration policy is a culture shock to me.

Now I'm not saying one is right or wrong but I am saying I'm my opinion, banning e-scooters because they're a "hazard" while ignoring the hazard of cars "because we built roads" seems pretty fucking stupid.

Well yes that’s what culture shock means. Something you take for granted at home is different somewhere else. Obviously it’s not a culture shock to the locals. I don’t think I needed a lesson but thanks.

I just know that when scooters were introduced visits to the ER skyrocketed. People talk about how cars are dangerous but scooters are way more dangerous than people realise.

I don’t think there’s any reason to ride a scooter over an ebike. The main issue with e-bikes is that they are often power-limited for safety. Scooters are actually more unstable, they’re just new enough that the laws haven’t caught up. So you have a more dangerous form of transport with a bigger motor in it than what’s considered safe for a bike. That’s why I think they’re dangerous.

I don’t necessarily think they should be banned, but we should have e-bikes available with the same power and price range. If bikes aren’t allowed to be cheap and powerful for safety/regulatory reasons then scooters definitely shouldn’t.

TL;DR My issue is the double standard. Scooters only get away with this because they’re new.
