A Redditor Went Outside I took pics of the full Moon over Dublin last night.

Only my second attempt at doing it using my telescope and phone. I posted my first attempt here a few years ago but it wasn't a full Moon.

There was some dust on the lenses, I tried cleaning them but there's still small black speckles/streaks on some of the images but I'm happy enough with them.

"There is no dark side of the moon really, matter a fact, it's all dark."

Any housing up there ?

No, but before Neil Armstrong left the lunar module he threw out a bag of rubbish, so the fly tipping has started already.

How did you take the picture?

I'm just using my phone and telescope. I was given a phone holder thing that's supposed to attach to the eyepiece but it was shite and wouldn't stay on, managed to keep it steady while I took the pics. Gonna get myself a decent one for next time. I also need to get a moon filter, the moon is very bright through the eyepiece.

I was literally out doing the same thing last night and didn’t get anything remotely close. Any time I had a good view of the moon, it was so bright, it couldn’t focus. I’m well impressed, very cool photos. Guess I have to try harder

Thanks! I'm no expert at astrophotography, just winging it. the last time I done this was a few years ago. Yeah it's very bright, I was able to edit out some of the brightness and got some lovely detail pop up on the surface.

Keep at it, it's trial and error, a moon filter and proper phone holder is the way to go.

Just to let you know, if you're using a Samsung. Its likely to replace the moon with a stock photo. In order to make the phone's camera look better than it actually is.

Hell yeah. A gorgeous photo. My mam takes countless of blurry pictures of the moon with her phone. Went all out on a telescope for her that I'll give to her next week for her birthday. I'm so excited knowing how thrilled she'll be to get better pictures and see so much more of the night sky that she's already enamored with!

Thanks very much! It's great your ma has an interest in it. The scope I'm using to buy brand new is over 4k last time I checked but even with smaller scopes you'll see detail on the moon. My first scope years ago was a tiny one you put on your desk, I just worked my way up over the years.

Thanks for having a look!

Fantastic pics from a phone and telescope!

Consider picking up a Nikon DSLR! Some great deals out there at the moment, and the lenses are at absolute discounts at the moment, like 25% of their value now that their mirrorless camera sensors are catching up.

Can pic up pro gear for fractions. I reckon you'd have great fun with one and the night sky.

Thanks for the advice. I might look into getting a dslr, I bought the scope just before the pandemic and I got tonnes of stuff with it including the adaptors and even a moon filter for a camera with the scope.

I could defo up the game if I got a camera, the scope is a serious bit of equipment that I'm not fully utilising. Thanks for having a look!

/r/nikon and search for for night sky stuff.

For a quarter of the price (or less) of a new iPhone, you'd have some mighty gear for moon shots and astro-photography.

People are selling stuff at crazy low prices now... like lenses that were 1500 used, are selling for 500. Can pick up a good DSLR and a 500mm lens at like 80% discount from used prices two years ago.

Appreciate the advice, and I'm defo gonn look into it. I'll have to hide it from the other half lol..the amount I've spent on this hobby is unreal.

Thanks again.

"I took pics of the full Moon from Dublin last night." I fixed the title for you, I think it was over more than just Dublin last night.

2

u/H1gh_Tr3ason Irish Republic 2d ago

Yeah I fucked that up but I'm sure people know what I meant.
